What is marriage like in the Realms? Do many people get married or is it more of a 'well, if you want to' institution? I would assume that it depends on the country/culture at which one is looking, so which cultures value/honor marriage and which see it as nice, but not important? Does it mean something special when one chooses to marry another instead of, say, having them as just a mate or consort?

I'm interested more in human lands than elven or otherwise.

If Ed has tackled the various questions on marriage, please point the way for me.

Thanks :)

Check Kuje's sig for some of Ed's interesting answers on the topic. Do note that he's also detailed rituals for two churches (Sune and Liira, if I remember right) for us at Candlekeep, so it really bears reading. :)

I'm sure the concept of marriage will change depending on factors like: alignment of the city, the gods worshiped, the "theme" of the city (knowledge and freedom like silverymoon, commerce in Sembia, etc).

In a city like Silverymoon people mostly marry for love, in cities based on comerce, marriage will be arranged among sons and daughters of powerfull families. This also aplies to your station in life, is very usual a pre-arranged marry among nobles.
