It's an island just east of the Moonshaes... might even be part of them, but I don't think it's normally considered such.

Anyone know anything about it, or where information can be located?

All I can dig up is that its home to accomplished shipwrights, and that the island has long since been deforested. The shipwrights get their timber from elsewhere... usually Alaron.

Other than that, I got nuthin.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

As far I can understand, it belongs to the Moonshaes.

They themselves are also a sea-faring nation, and that that group is just a small splinter.

I think you as a DM are alound to do as much with them as you please.:twitch:

Thanks, Neblin.

It actually doesn't appear to be within the Moonshae domain... as loose a thing as that is. I'm finding references to a self-proclaimed tyrant that controls the isle. He's neither a Northlander or of the Ffolk, and he doesn't seem to acknowledge the High Queen at all.

Whether or not he's "canon" though, that I've yet to ascertain. The sources haven't been official in any sense.

Yes, I can do anything I'd like to with the islands, but if I was going to rewrite them completely, I'd just create my own setting. :) I'd prefer to embellish or put a spin on the existing source material rather than contradict it outright.

Funnily enough, I tend to want to keep things as close the paper work as possible as well.

I found that if I don't, then somewhere down the line I find an adventure or another sourcebook, and then nothing will work proper like.

The source that I read came off some or another webpage, which I sincerely doubt was official.

But as I said, they stated that Mintarn broke of from the Shae's due to political reasons. Hence my wording of splinter group.

But then their take could be completely wrong.:)

Right. That's pretty much where I'm coming from here. Sometimes I don't care about that, but in this case, where I want it to be full-fledged Realms campaign, I'm staying close to source. The changes I'm making are relatively minor, and are predominantly flavour oriented.

Another reason for my approach is that some of my players have never really experienced the Realms before... so I want to present them with something that's fairly in line with the established material.

Hmmm. That might be.

The sources I've seen (two of them) have referred to this tyrant guy as "Tarnheel Embuirhan". That they both used the same name leads me to believe he's hiding in the canon somewhere. He's not in the old Moonshaes supplement, though.

I did a search on that name and came up this link,

http://www.volny.cz/aleaz/fantasy/ForgottenRealms/GrandTourOfTheRealms/BeyondHeartlands.html

and then another link to an .rtf file listing:

MINTARN:
Bharandas Zhan (LN hm W12)- Aide of Tarnheel Embuirhan :FRCS:CR, 64
Szentarr Ravin (LN hm W(I)10)- Aide of Tarnheel Embuirhan :FRCS:CR, 64
Tarnheel Embuirhan (LN hm F15)- Self-styled Tyrant of Mintarn :FRCS:CR, 64

Are these the links you were referring to?

I also flipped through my old 2E Moonshae's supplement and found nothing ...SO ... I s'pose it ok to go with what we've said so far. Sounds the best.

Not really satisfied though, and now this bugs me as well.

Nope. So it actually stands as further evidence that the guy is in the material somewhere.

Heehee. I wouldn't get too stressed about it. ;) Some Maven of Canon will eventually come along and enlighten us, I'm sure.

Thanks for your efforts, though.

Edited to add: What do you suppose "CR, 42" is?

Mintarn is a medium-sized island 400 miles southwest of Waterdeep. It is best known as a safe hacen for those in flight from the authorities. This beautiful tree-cloaked island is a free port on the Sword Coast where no questions are asked and no one is turned away.
The island is a refuge for fugitives from justice, pirates, war refugees, mercenaries, and others who want to transact business, buy arms, or enjoy themselces away from the watchful eyes of foreign rulers and more proper authorities. Its wine taverns and festhalls are legendary up and down the sword coast for boht their services and their dangers.
Mintarn is ruled by a self-styled "tyrant" named Tanrheel Embuuirhan(LN hm F15). His Tyrancy, despite his title, is known to be open-minded, open-eyed, and open-handed, and lets Mintarn tend to itself in most of its day-to-day dealings. Tarnheel does keep order, keeps individuals from using force to gain their ends on his island, and acts to prevent pirates, other realms, or other scalawags from gaining control of Mintarn.
Circa 1367 DR as published in A Grand Tour of the Realms FR Box Set 1993 page 109.
Other sources show that Luskan and Rauthym have both been thwarted in capturing Mintarn, do to the large number of ships and troops that come through Mintarn, and timely aid from Waterdeep and Baldurs Gate. It seems everyone likes having a neutral port to do business at.Faerun is no more than a small territory hugging a larger world, which in turn is only the third world of eight orbiting a central sun, which is entirely encapsulated in a crystal sphere within a swriling chaos, which in turn is only one in myriad alternate dimensions. But for the races of Toril, for the elves, dwarves and gnomes and halflings and humans, Faerun has a very important name: It is home.

There's an excellent Ed Greenwood short story set there in Realms of the Deep.

It was in the same series as the siege on Mithral Hall (and Pwent).

Think it was Passage to Dawn or Siege of Darkness (the series).

Psst, Astanphaeus also posted this on the Geography board. Let's answer it there, where the thread belongs.

This beautiful tree-cloaked island...

According to the Moonshaes sourcebook, "the shipbuilders of Mintarn have long since exhausted the timber on their now barren island."

Oh well. I suppose I'll use whichever I like best... or try an amalgamation of the two.

Thanks folks. :)
