I haven't played in the realms in along time so a lot of the information I once knew I have forgotten. Maybe that is why they named it the Forgotten Realms, the setting is so vast and detailed you always forget at least one thing important. Anyways, I am looking to play a archer monk in the campaign my group is running. I am trying to come up with the details for his back story and I need a place for him to hail from. He is a human monk that uses a bow, My DM and I talked about it and don't see why the monk gets the crossbow and not the bow. Monks are all about training and to be good with a bow one has to train both mind and body.

So I am looking for a realm which is knew for its monks and archers. Maybe a now human settlement that was once part of the Elven lands of old. Also if anyone has any storyline ideas for a character of this type then please post that too. Thank for the help.

If you are playing in Faerūn, but are looking to run an Oriental-style Monk, Thesk is the way to go. If you don't care about race, then Monastic Orders can be found throughout the Realms. Pg. 25 of the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting has a partial list of Orders of Monks for use in the Realms.

Also, some of those orders allow you to break the "no going back" rule involving multi-classed Monks. ;)

I believe there is a Monk order somewhere in Tethyr, which may be what your looking for. I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it, but you can easily connect them to the ancient Elven Kingdom in the Wealdath Forest.

Going by the description, it may actually be best to make up your own order of monks. You also go a step further and develop your own little realm in some unclaimed spot on the map for the monk to be from (for the record, I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head that is specifically well-known for both monks and archers).

I started to look through the books again. I see that Silverymoon, The Daleland and the Great Dale have Bows and Composite Bows listed as bonus equipment. The monk Regions list Silverymoon. So I am thinking that a human monk out of Silverymoon maybe able to pick up archer as a skill.

I have the Silver March book in hard copy so it would make sense for me to use it. I am also looking to the Peerless Archer as a prestige class if I can find a way to make my monk skills stack for at least part of it.

I really like the idea of a Monastic Order from Silverymoon - good call.

If they were tied to Alustriel, they could be Monks of the Shining Hand, who follow Azuth. It would make some sense that the servants of Mystra's servant would Obey Mystra's Chosen. Of course, that means you can multi-class freely as a wizard, but since you're 'going martial' I'm not sure if thats any help.

Perhaps multi as a Warmage or a Hexblade, or some other fighter/mage combo class? That might give you a little extra 'umph' - maybe even go Arcane Archer after grabbing a single caster level somewhere.

A group of Azuth-worshipping Monks that use Zen Archery, and combining it with the talens of the Arcane Archer - I'm seeing a lot of possibilities there.
