| SilverSword77508-06-07, 07:27 PM | Hey all, first post so please excuse any idiocy about to spew forth. I am in the process of creating a backstory for a Lawful Evil Monk and am looking for a list of the canon orders extant in the setting. Thanks! SSword |
| Eli_the_Tanner08-06-07, 07:40 PM | There is a small list of monk orders in the FRCS, it gives a brief description of their beliefs/practices. Most orders in Forgotten realms allow monks to multiclass into a select number of classes without penalties. Evil-wise there is the is the Monks of the Dark moon who venerate shar (shadowdancer muticlassing allowed, if I recall) and the Monks of the Long death who venerate death itself (rather than any god of death). I believe the Monks of the Old order have a few evil monks among their order. There is also a prestige class for Monks of the Long death in the player's guide to Faerun. It combines the abilites of assassin and monk. |
| Old Sage08-06-07, 08:57 PM | You may find this listing of Monk Orders useful:- http://candlekeep.com/library/articles/monks.htm Tom Costa provided a variant monk, called the Varde Elgg, in his unofficial PDF material for PrCs in the Realms:- http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/prestige_classes.html The previews for the City of Splendors tome also provided details on an Amaunator-based monastic order. Calling themselves Sun Soul Monks, they're detailed here - http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x...rigin=&origin= See the web enhancement for Faiths & Pantheons also, for brief listings of deity-based monkish orders:- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20020504a The 2e accessories - Lands of Intrigue and Empires of the Shining Sea - also cover several monastic orders, including one based on Ilmater. See the FRCS as well. Note however that these monastic orders were made up for the FRCS to insert 3e monks into the Realms. Almost certainly, unlike almost every other aspect of the Realms, there's little or no extant unpublished lore. |
| Old Sage08-06-07, 09:00 PM | The Broken Ones receive a brief nod in the F&P web enhancement -- but little true details are revealed beyond their mention as a monk order devoted to Ilmater. The Dark Moon monks receive further treatment in Lords of Darkness. Tom Reid said he expanded on those initial 'Hin Fist' details that were included in the 3e FRCS, for Shining South. For the Monks of the Long Death... see Lords of Darkness. Unless I've overlooked a new reference, there is almost nothing in print about the Old Order, other than the FRCS and the F&P WE. |
| Eli_the_Tanner08-06-07, 09:11 PM | The Old Order seem to be the representative of generic monk order in the realms, commited to no particular deity. However they seem one of the most interesting as there is some hints that they are possibly based upon a dead or non-existant deity. |
| Mad Mage08-06-07, 10:14 PM | Old Sage beat me to the Faiths & Pantheons web enhancement. *sighs* :embarrass Well, I can say this much: There are also a hint of details revealed about some gameplay/roleplay elements of some orders in the Monk Substitution levels for said orders in Champions of Valor and its web enhancement. Still, I would mostly buy that if you're really interested in substitution levels for gameplay flavor. :teach: |

| The_Shaman08-08-07, 09:08 AM | BTW, why do I get the feeling that the Long Death monks were on relatively good terms with the Jergali clergy? |
