Does Insight bonus stack? The Body Tamer gets +2 insight bonus for his Code of Mental Abstinence, does this stack with the insight bonus given to him by a Illithidwrought weapon?

Does Insight bonus for Shield stack with insight bonus for Armor? (a Illithidwrought halfplate, with a illithidwrought large steel Shield?)

Does the Malleable give you full Dex bonus to AC all the time? or just when you are in a tight spot?

Making a Illithid Body Tamer was harder then one would have thought..

Hello Linguist,

Here is my take on your questions:

According to the DMG (page 21), insight bonuses do not stack.

However, the Insight Bonus granted by Code of Mental Abstinence only applies to damage rolls made for melee weapon and tentacle attacks.

Thus, an Illithidwrought weapon would grant a +2 Insight bonus to hit and damage, but the damage bonus would not stack with the insight bonus to damage granted by the CoMA. (“Coma”. Get it? :chuckle: )

The short answer: Yes.

Note: I only saw Illithidwrought Armor listed in the Underdark book. I didn’t see any shields mentioned.

However, since bonuses from Armor and bonuses from Shields are separate in 3.5 (and therefore stack with each other), I see no reason why an Illithidwrought armor and Illithidwrought shield wouldn’t stack, since the insight bonus for the former would apply to the total Armor bonus and the insight bonus from the later would apply to the total Shield bonus.

After reading the portion of the description for Malleable Armor that reads, “The wearer also retains his Dexterity bonus (if any) to his Armor class.” I came to the conclusion that this portion was talking only about reducing the loss of Dex bonus caused by moving in a narrow space or a low space.

When I checked page 111 of the Underdark book, I found a section titled Spelunking: Cramped Spaces, that read, “Any creature fighting in a cramped space looses its Dexterity bonus (if any) to Armor Class.”

Thus, I’ve concluded that Malleable armor allows the wearer to retain his normal maximum Dex score for the armor he is wearing while fighting in Narrow spaces and Low spaces.

So if a character is wearing a Malleable Breast Plate, his maximum dex bonus in that armor is +3 (per the PHB page 123). The Malleable nature of his armor will not increase the maximum dex bonus allowed by that armor. However, if that character moves into low ceiling or narrow terrain, he will not suffer the loss of his Dex Score either.

I can see what you mean. However, now that we’ve figured these questions out, we’ll both be on top of things when we run our games, which is good.
