| sweetmisery07-25-06, 07:37 PM | What do you think - when that particular society tries to conquer the Realms, will be most successful? Once again, just my mind wondering and wanting to discuss with other fans of FR. And which do you think have the most influence, where others will be glad to join their ranks? I think the Red Wizards, if they want to conquer really have a big chance succeeding... only if they dont have internal turmoil. The Zhents too, due to their influence of a lot of common folk can easily gain a lot of foothold in certain places. |
| Besshalar07-25-06, 07:45 PM | Tricky probably Zhentarim although now that the whole show is so strongly under Banes fist they may have gotten a bit too much into the whole open conquest thing which just won't work for long ... Because after the first succesfull invasion of a country all the other big boys would notice and do something about it. Faerun can only be ruled from the shadows ... |
| GothicDan07-25-06, 07:49 PM | The Twisted Rune. |
| Besshalar07-25-06, 08:07 PM | The Twisted Rune. Care to elaborate ? I mean sure very powerful individuals but exactly how much clout do they have ? Haven't seen much information on them anywhere .... Or should I take that as a hint ? ;) |
| Xavier_of_Cormyr07-25-06, 08:26 PM | The Shadovar... they're just starting to shake things up. Given time, they'll gain all the strength they need to make BIG changes in the realms. |
| GothicDan07-25-06, 08:36 PM | You should. :) Suffice it to say they effortlessly control Calimshan from behind the scenes, and have been considering extending their reach just for fun. |
| yarethon07-25-06, 10:45 PM | Currently zhentarim/church of bane |
| Lord Karsus07-25-06, 11:52 PM | -The Zhents are just too inept...But, I guess, that they would be the most dangerous evil group out there. |
| GothicDan07-26-06, 12:09 AM | Maybe the Zhents are only APPEARING to be inept... |
| Lord Karsus07-26-06, 12:14 AM | -Aha. So, since we think they are inept, we'll all let our guard down. And, when our guard is down, they will strike. Such an insidious plan... |
| GothicDan07-26-06, 12:30 AM | Very much so. |
| The Ubbergeek07-26-06, 12:52 AM | Evil tend to turn on itself, say Dragonlance... Maybe something like the Zentharim is destined to fall to factionalism by nature? |
| GothicDan07-26-06, 01:22 AM | FR isn't Dragonlance, though. :) |
| saru07-26-06, 02:09 AM | church of cyric this church is so powerful that even writers don't want to say bad things about it. |
| yarethon07-26-06, 02:51 AM | Very powerful... but its members are too busy killing one another... and I believe the cyricist within the zhents won't hold against the banite |
| sweetmisery07-26-06, 02:57 AM | Very powerful... but its members are too busy killing one another... and I believe the cyricist within the zhents won't hold against the banite Cyric > Bane :D Anyway what if the Zhentarim make a full scale assault in Thay and the Red Wizard, lead by Fzoul and Manshoon? That would make for a nice trilogy! |
| yarethon07-26-06, 03:05 AM | Cyric > Bane I wouldn't count on that. Cyric is just a divine fool =) Anyway what if the Zhentarim make a full scale assault in Thay and the Red Wizard, lead by Fzoul and Manshoon? That would make for a nice trilogy! Why would they do that? Just to get themselves into unnecessary trouble? I would occupy myself uniting the zhentarim, first Also thay has significant whorship of bane... I don't believe the black lord would allow fzoul to do that with no reason heheheh See .. the church of bane and the zhentarim are very close now |

And they think Thay would make a great country for them, not to say holds a lot of magical items, and secrets. I wonder if they have what it takes to conquer it. Oh, and Cyric can kill Bane in any given day! lol |
| yarethon07-26-06, 04:01 AM | And they think Thay would make a great country for them, not to say holds a lot of magical items, and secrets. I wonder if they have what it takes to conquer it. But at what cost? THay has an enormous army.... I can't see why that choice... Oh, and Cyric can kill Bane in any given day! lol Ypu can'tbe serious auhahahahaha |
| Duskblade07-26-06, 04:42 AM | I'm just wondering, what if Bane or the rest of the Zhentarim want to expand... And they think Thay would make a great country for them, not to say holds a lot of magical items, and secrets. I wonder if they have what it takes to conquer it. Honestly, what makes people even think that the Zhentarim and the church of Bane are on the same level then Thay. Thay is in effect a fortified stronghold, wich no enemy army could hope to breach unless they have alot more magical firepower then the Thayans. Thay can also count on divine aid from the church of Kossuth and Cyric's church would gladly help in the battle too, not to mention all the other evil faiths that can openly exist within the borders of Thay without all the persecution they face in the rest of Faerun. Thay can easily withstand a siege, as they've got more magic items, money and allies. Halruaa is a nation that is on equal level with Thay, and neither is going to attack the other because they understand it would self-destructive. |
| Duskblade07-26-06, 04:44 AM | Oh, and Cyric can kill Bane in any given day! lol Yep and twice on sunday. |
| Besshalar07-26-06, 04:45 AM | Honestly, what makes people even think that the Zhentarim and the church of Bane are on the same level then Thay. The reason for passing thay by is the lack of unified leadership . The Zulkirs of Thay couldn't agree on the color of a sunflower and are thus a far lesser threat . |
| Lordornas07-26-06, 05:05 AM | Definetly the Shadovar,i mean they took out the Cult of the Dragon, singlehanded, just to proof they could to it, and that where a lot of high lvl mages who could create dracolichs!! Then it took almost every Choosen of Mystra to get them in serious trouble and King Shadow didnt even started to fight. They changed the whole Landscape and Weather of the North with their Shadowstuff, so give them enough time, to recover their netherese heiritage, ruins, magic stuff and so on, and GG to the rest of the societys. To the Thays, they dont really stand a chance, i mean in Thay okay anyone will have massive trouble fighting them, but outside of Thay they are nothing you cant deal with. Same goes for the Zenths and Cyrics they are just to stupid, killing each other, schemeing against each other, would they pull on one string, well then the realms would have a really big probleme but they way it is now, the Shadovar are the only ones who are really dangerous i think. |
| Yokinobu07-26-06, 09:08 AM | What the Shadovar need to do is start cranking out shades like nobody's business, and then all the Princes need to work on an epic spell to plunge half of Faerun in darkness. Then simply go Jet Li on everybody. |
| Old Sage07-26-06, 09:35 AM | The Twisted Rune. That'd pretty much be my suggestion as well. ;) |
| Old Sage07-26-06, 09:36 AM | Care to elaborate ? I mean sure very powerful individuals but exactly how much clout do they have ? Haven't seen much information on them anywhere .... Or should I take that as a hint ? ;)Take a look through Empires of the Shining Sea and you'll see why GD and I both answered with the Twisted Rune. |
| Mirtek07-26-06, 11:22 AM | Tricky probably Zhentarim although now that the whole show is so strongly under Banes fist they may have gotten a bit too much into the whole open conquest thing which just won't work for long ... Because after the first succesfull invasion of a country all the other big boys would notice and do something about it. Faerun can only be ruled from the shadows ... Yep, the Zhentarim are in huge trouble now, becoming puppets of the CoB was the worst that could happen to them, it will ruin the organization in just a few decades. The CoB will wear them out like some old boots and then throw them away. While they had close connections in the past, they were never controlled by the CoB and the styles of the Zhentarim and the CoB are just too different, the Zhentarim can't last like the CoB wants them. |
| yarethon07-26-06, 02:39 PM | that is why they are strong |
| Mirtek07-26-06, 03:13 PM | that is why they are strong No, the while maintaining armies the Zhentarim were merchants and spies at their core, that's what made them strong and that's were they excel. The CoB are tyrants and conquerors, their ways are totally different from what the Zhentarim used to be and they will use the Zhentarim as a tool like they see think they should be used (not much different from Xvim who ordered Fzoul to replace "the failed tyrannt, more interested in money and secrets than might"). But "money and secrets" are the lifeblood of the Zhentarim, and the CoB will try to use them as an empire to launch conquests. And the Zhentarim can't handle this, it will destroy the Zhentarim. |
| GothicDan07-26-06, 03:24 PM | I miss the Manshoon-controlled Zhentarim. |
| yarethon07-26-06, 05:04 PM | But "money and secrets" are the lifeblood of the Zhentarim, and the CoB will try to use them as an empire to launch conquests. And the Zhentarim can't handle this, it will destroy the Zhentarim. I f you say so I don't agree.. but whatever note that i don't even like it , i also prefer the zhentarim primarily as merchants But with the CoB as back upī.... they are more powerful now |
| Old Sage07-26-06, 10:38 PM | I miss the Manshoon-controlled Zhentarim.I miss the Manshoon Wars. |
| Lord Karsus07-26-06, 10:39 PM | Yep and twice on sunday. -Too bad Sundays don't exist on Toril... ;) |
| stanleyx200207-27-06, 02:15 AM | Drow. (sorry, i had to) |
| Besshalar07-27-06, 05:46 AM | What about the society of Kraken ? |
| The Ubbergeek07-27-06, 02:19 PM | Drow. (sorry, i had to) Nah, they are too tied to the Underdark to present a worldwide menace. They can create local, regional trouble, but unless the drow end up readapting as a race to the surface world... Nah. |
| wesleytj07-27-06, 02:45 PM | my vote would have to either go to the church of shar, or thay. the church of shar has that whole shadow weave thing working for it. lots and lots of possibility there. the weave could fail tomorrow, and that would leave MOST magic users in a nasty bind. MOST but not ALL... ;) A Chosen of Shar (hey if Mystra can have Chosen why couldn't Shar?) based in a dead magic zone (dead to the weave anyway...) etc etc etc... The Thayans have the potential too, because even though everyone knows they're evil, they almost always allow them to do business in their region anyway. why? because money talks and BS walks. Thayans offer good products at really good prices, and at the end of the day, most people will respect that, and that is a power of the highest order. What would be REALLY scary is if those two got together...the Red Wizards started making, selling, and distributing Shadow Weave items, unbeknownst to their buyers. That could be a major power base for Shar and for Thay. |
| Red_Wizard07-27-06, 03:31 PM | Any one of them that could finally unite their faction would be a powerhouse, but the evil will never unite, atleast not for long enough to accomplish anything of real revelence. With any luck though, Thay will come flying back like theres no tomorrow from this whole trade plot, and do some crazy damage. I mean they have an uber flow of money, and nothing but time to sit and build uber armies. So, perhaps in a few years our time, enough time will have passed in Faerun, and then maybe we'll see the fruit of their labors unfold, in.....duh, duh, duh *zoom in on best Dr. Evil impression* The complete destruction of Aglarond :P :D |
| wilken07-27-06, 05:37 PM | Probably The Twisted Rune. |
| wesleytj07-27-06, 05:55 PM | Any one of them that could finally unite their faction would be a powerhouse, but the evil will never unite, atleast not for long enough to accomplish anything of real revelence. That depends entirely upon the evil factions in question, most particularly their alignments. It would be difficult to imagine a pair of Chaotic Evil groups working together for long; as soon as the slightest divergence in their goals appeared, they'd be at each other's throats again. However, wise, calculating evil groups can and often do work together for extended periods of time and accomplish much of real relevance. These are the sorts of collaborations around which really good campaigns can be made, in which the PC's are tasked with thwarting this great evil. |
| GothicDan07-27-06, 07:54 PM | That's what makes the Twisted Rune so powerful - among other things. They traditionally settle their conflicts with chess. The pieces just happen to be mortals. |
| sweetmisery07-27-06, 10:30 PM | Bah! I just realized Artemis and Jarlaxle will own them all! Their cunning and wits will get them so far, not to say Charon's Claw! |
| Duagloth07-27-06, 10:49 PM | Thay: Now we get the big guns. Well invading Thay will end in a Phaerimm-Netheril War. Big holes in the Landscape (and if the Attacker is Halrua REALLY Big holes) Zhent: Hmm not enough People to fight all the good doers out there, and to well known to stay in the shadows. Twisted Rune: Good Point. They maybe could try it. Shade: With enough time they can try to take all the Land except Thay and Halrua. (Big holes you remember:)) I would bet on Twisted Rune or a sleeping Dragon who lives long enough so be the last living beeing on Toril after the Thay/Halrua/Shade war. |
| Mr. Wilson07-28-06, 04:39 AM | The Harpers or possibly the Moonstars. One or the other is going to cause a major catastrophe with all their meddling. That said, the only group I'd truly fear is the Twisted Rune. Those guys are scary. |
| Magnathyr07-28-06, 08:21 AM | None.... The Gods won't allow it. The only one that ever came close was Sammaster and his Cult of the Dragon. Sammaster pretty much handed ALL of the combined good forces of Faerun their butts on a platter. When the Seven Sisters, Khelben, Elminster, the Harpers, the Lords Alliance, and every other army they could muster couldn't stop Sammaster, Lathander himself had to come down and stop the cult. Even then it wasn't easy. When a God has to directly intervene because the rest of the realms can't stop you, I would say that says it all. Just my opinion. :D That reminds me.... Why isn't Sammaster a God? If his actions didn't warrant promotion to an evil Deity, then no mortal on the face of Toril should have been granted Godhood. IMO again. :P  |
| Red_Wizard07-28-06, 08:39 AM | That depends entirely upon the evil factions in question, most particularly their alignments. These are the sorts of collaborations around which really good campaigns can be made, in which the PC's are tasked with thwarting this great evil. Yeah, Chaotic organizations tend to not last long on their own anyway. But what i was meaning was a unification amongst members of one group, not multiple groups. The prime example being the Thayans, and their failings to work as one. That's what makes the Twisted Rune so powerful - among other things. They traditionally settle their conflicts with chess. The pieces just happen to be mortals. I'm not sure i consider them an organization. They're a bunch of head figures, who control alot of things, but no one knows who the big boss is, when they work for them. It says in their description in LoD that many people working in the realms, work for them, through several layers of other people and thus have no idea the Twisted Rune controls their actions. So while they are a group in a sence, and damn good at what they do, i can't see them ever doing anything that would make them a recognizable target, as quite simply, their true power, lies in remaining annoymous. :) |
| spadehammerfist07-28-06, 10:45 AM | When deciding what the main thrust of my new campaign was going to be, I had to look for the villain(s). The City of Shade caught my eye, as did the drow, the fey'ri and then the Phaerimm, but none of them seemed to be looking at the bigger picture, they are all too internalised (even more so, are the various evil churches). However, I did think they could be manipulated by another group - especially when you look at the novels and accessories and where I wanted to base the first part of my campaign - Myth Drannor. They all can converge there, mainly either to kill each other, to hide from enemies or to seize power from the mythal/items in MD. At the center of all this are my PCs who are also being manipulated to some great but evil end, by... ...can you figure it out? A group that have been around a long time, led by someone used to trickery of the highest order. A group that can see the world as something they would/could/should own. A group that sees ALL others as slaves. Can you tell who it is yet? (to paraphrase Rolf Harris :)) |

| Duagloth07-28-06, 11:32 AM | Now how about this? Shade becomes part of Thay, Lord Shadow becomes the Zulkir of Shadow Weave in Thay. All the people of Halrua get sick because of bad fish they ate. And Larloch takes over the Throne as supream leader of Thay. Well now we have a organisation able to take over the world hmm or they just destroy the whole world in a battle against each other. |
| spadehammerfist07-28-06, 01:33 PM | Need more clues? Lord Shadow (Telamont of the Shades) met one of them in Ancient Netheril, but he didn't know it! That being, going by the name of Arthindol, warned of the coming disaster of the casting of "Karsus' Avatar" |
| GothicDan07-28-06, 03:02 PM | I'm not sure i consider them an organization. And that's what makes them the BEST evil organization! |
| spadehammerfist08-06-06, 09:41 AM | Given up so easily, or am I just being ignored? I am, of course, using the Sarrukh! With an altered CR of course, but then with character levels. The Terraseer is behind a lot that has happened in the Realms IMC; the rise of Netheril (to give the Phearimm something else to worry about) the survival of some of the Netherese (by giving them a warning of a disaster with magic) and even magic itself (canon does say that the Nether Scrolls are actually the Golden Skins of the World Serpent and were collated by the Sarrukh and the organisation the Ba'etith) and is in control of Najara. The Sarrukh's present aim is to use their 'insider' knowledge to trick various groups into awakening/tainting/bringing back to Faerun the various Mythal cities - starting with Myth Drannor! |
| The Ubbergeek08-06-06, 11:36 AM | No, the while maintaining armies the Zhentarim were merchants and spies at their core, that's what made them strong and that's were they excel. Both ways are not necessarly antagonistic. An army need spies and backing, and the Zenthrim, with an army... It could very well strenghten them in the long run. Make them something powerfull. |
| Lord Karsus08-07-06, 07:24 AM | Need more clues? Lord Shadow (Telamont of the Shades) met one of them in Ancient Netheril, but he didn't know it! That being, going by the name of Arthindol, warned of the coming disaster of the casting of "Karsus' Avatar" -I wouldn't exactly say that it was a disaster. |
| Besshalar08-07-06, 08:06 AM | -I wouldn't exactly say that it was a disaster. How many people was it that died because of you ? I'd call it a disaster |
| Lord Karsus08-07-06, 08:19 AM | How many people was it that died because of you ? I'd call it a disaster -How many lived because of that casting? If that spell had never been cast, there would have been many possible futures, all of which could have been radically different from what we have now. Think of it as the Butterfly Effect, though on a much larger scale, and with much higher stakes. |
| GothicDan08-07-06, 08:27 AM | Hush up, Karsus. It was a disaster. :) You can't use Chaos Theory as a cop-out, because it can always go either way. |
| Lord Karsus08-07-06, 08:37 AM | -If it weren't for that spell, the Weave would have eventually crumbled under the stress of all of the power that was being drawn from it, from the Phaerimm and the Netherese. If the Weave unraveled, that would have been very bad, for everyone. Instead, we had Karsus' Avatar, and the death of Mystryl. This caused a momentary glitch in magic, but everything came back online, better than ever. So, in effect, everyone should be thanking me. -And anyway, most of those Netherese Archmages who perished weren't exactly the nicest guys. Who would want a whole bunch of surly Archmages running around? |
| Besshalar08-07-06, 08:58 AM | Okay yes the Netherese archmages weren't the nicest guys but even in those days they weren't exactly growing on trees so why didn't you just kill off the mages and leave the rest of the population alone ... Oh yeah I forgot then you wouldn't be a God would you . ;) |
| Lord Karsus08-07-06, 09:03 AM | Okay yes the Netherese archmages weren't the nicest guys but even in those days they weren't exactly growing on trees so why didn't you just kill off the mages and leave the rest of the population alone ... | GothicDan08-07-06, 09:27 AM | Elves > Netherese. ;) |
| Lord Karsus08-07-06, 09:31 AM | Elves > Netherese. ;) -I agree, and have never contested that! |
| BrennonGoldeye08-07-06, 10:21 AM | Lord K, no offense intended, but a disaster doesn't even begin to describe what one man(loosely using that term, most of the Elder would say child) did to the Weave. Any mage that casts a spell without at least working out what the possible consequences could be doesn't deserve to use the Art(making his present situation very appropriate). If you can cast a spell to steal the godhood can you at least use a few spells beforehand to bind the spirit of said god to your will? I mean, come on. I know he was under pressure from the coneheads and other Arcanists, but this is the reason HighMages are so rare amongst the 'Quesir. Having the knowledge doesn't make you ready for the power. Not to say the elves haven't had screwups-The Rage anyone?-but Karsus truly was the apple that spoiled the barrel. :D P.S.-And of course, Elves rule! :D |
| MazrimTaim08-07-06, 12:21 PM | The Twisted Rune, they control an entire country behind the scenes and yet we have no idea on their true motives or what holds them together. **Slight spoilers below** Plus, upon reading Blackstaff, the Frostrune seemed to be a fairly powerful lich yet he wasn't even a peon to the true leadership of the Rune. They manipulated him through and through. |
| Bonzai08-07-06, 12:22 PM | I'd say the Elves. Look at all the damage they've done so far. The sundering, wiping out nations with huge tidal waves, bringing back shade, etc... Sun elves have been known to assosiate, and even breed with Demons from time to time. They say humans are bad, but Elves are responsible for much greater disasters. Another group that hasn't really been mentioned is the cult of the Dragon. They are steadily building an army of Dracoliches. Samaster created amulets that allow them to controll dracoliches and evil dragons. Think about it. What could a flight of Dracoliches do? They could start a scorched earth campaign that fullfills their prophecy. |

But they are only really dangerous to most of the evil groups that have been mentioned here. The majority of Elves,(besides Drow) are good. |
| TheOneWhoDefeatsAO08-07-06, 11:13 PM | I thank you Karsus you destroyed The Netherese empire. :D Twisted Rune: good point Thay: only if it was united Zhents: perhaps... Cyric:no chance, he is a fool and will soon die Kraken society: no Shar:could cause trouble but no |
| dragonfriend08-08-06, 02:22 AM | Take a look through Empires of the Shining Sea and you'll see why GD and I both answered with the Twisted Rune. agree. Twisted Rune |
| Lord Karsus08-08-06, 08:43 AM | I thank you Karsus you destroyed The Netherese empire. :D -I didn't exactly destroy the Netherese. I made the empire...evolve. Now, it exists as Shade, Opus, Halruaa, and a handful of amazingly powerful Liches. |
| dragonheart08-10-06, 10:43 AM | I think I'll wade in here with an alternative or three :P overt threat - shade Known hidden threat - twisted rune unknown hidden threat - shoon Empire - now that the last emperor is back in the body of an elf girl this is at least potentially a major threat - a 30+ level caster essentially no one knows about who is well practiced in the manipultion of peoples and powers and strong enough to take on essentially anyone one on one (even possibly the Symbul). I know if I were running cannon he/she would be a really major problem running around slowly setting things up behind the scenes and staying out of the line of sight for about 3 centuries before springing my traps and plans and recreating a post modern version of the empire all over again somewhere new. |

I know if I were running cannon he/she would be a really major problem running around slowly setting things up behind the scenes and staying out of the line of sight for about 3 centuries before springing my traps and plans and recreating a post modern version of the empire all over again somewhere new. So for 3 centuries in the Realms(120 years on Terra) we wouldn't even know about it's evil plots and dastardly plans...Cool, I won't be around in 2126, unless the Japanese come up with something new... :lightbulb |
| Whizbang196308-10-06, 01:29 PM | Drow. (sorry, i had to) Lloth has them too busy keeping her entertained with their internal power struggles for them to unite long enough to do more than cause local troubles. Now is she had a thirst for a surface empire to rival her empire underdark to create new chaos and conflicts for her enjoyment, well maybe then. |
| Whizbang196308-10-06, 01:35 PM | Another group that hasn't really been mentioned is the cult of the Dragon. They are steadily building an army of Dracoliches. Samaster created amulets that allow them to controll dracoliches and evil dragons. Think about it. What could a flight of Dracoliches do? They could start a scorched earth campaign that fullfills their prophecy. It will be interesting to see where this goes over the course of time. A horde of peeved/controlled evil dragons could definitely do some damage. Of course the question begs itself, if they embard on a scorched earth campaign, then what do they leave behind to be ruled over? Would not power be wasted if you did not have anyone to use it on? |
| UmbralKnight08-10-06, 01:49 PM | The Twisted Rune, they control an entire country behind the scenes and yet we have no idea on their true motives or what holds them together. I agree completly. The Twisted Rune 100%. |
| Alac Luin08-10-06, 01:58 PM | I'll just throw out a vote for the Bricksmen. Only becouse nothing is known of them (yet this orginization is from a Realms accesory). |

| Zextril08-14-06, 07:18 AM | Slowly but surely, Bregan D'aerthe. The mercenary Drow already have a foothold in Calimport. Certanly not as powerful or influental as other groups but they have the potential. Not being lead by a greater beings (namly the "gods") or controled by magic. They have ties in everything, opretive all along the swords coast, and perhaps when or if Jarlaxle is done with his "adventurein" he will set his goals with them once more. And if this happens, I think they would have all the better chance. It may have beeen already stated, but since i didn't read everything and i don't remember the true name of the group, how about the shadowdragon/drow people that were plotting form the "War of the Spider Queen". They may start with thte underdark adn Loth, but if htey can truly overthrow Loth, imagine what they could do on the surface of they put their will to it? Zextril |

| Hippie_Drow08-16-06, 08:00 PM | I think that the harpers would be the most powerful society. They have Elminster, the seven sisters, The Drow of Elistree, Various Good Bards and Rogues, and Selune, and most other Chaotic Good Faiths. Though they would never conqure the relms |
