I was just reading the City of Spider Queen Horror Stories which I never played in or ran but it got me to thinking about other adventures and modules I have run or played in where the characters had TPK's or just constant deaths over multiple games. I would love to hear some stories about adventures, whether you DM'ed or played, where parties had suffered horrible losses.

I think the most brutal module I ever ran was the Ravenloft 2 parter From the Shadows and Roots of Evil. I brought my FR party into Ravenloft to run it. I killed everyone at least twice through both adventures. In one battle in Azalin's castle, only one character was left standing after he shot off a fireball in the room that killed everyone except for himself and the Phaerimm they were fighting, that was how desperate the fight was. (Had to add more Realms flavor so what is better than the Phaerimm right?) It was an insane battle. The party was so paranoid by the end of the first module, they refused to run the clones provided later on in the module and half the group swithched to new characters. That was how tough it was they gave characters a second chance with clones because there was no chance to get through without major deaths. The party tried to bypass the bulk of the adventure by flying straight up through the castle only to be attacked by literally 40-50 wraiths! I think the nastiest thing I did to them though was in Roots of Evil, the second part, the party is given a chance to kill Azalin's body, so I had him wearing all cursed items with a dwoemer that would identify the items as beneficial. So of course everyone put something on and the whole party was cursed. Now that was funny. Sometimes players need to get punished when they are too greedy :D They tried to argue he wold have never thought of that and I said I did and I certainly do not have a 30+ intelligence!

I think the most brutal encounter I ever played in was a Dragon adventure, the one with the castle of Vampires. I think issue 292? We played it pretty stupid though. One player stuck his head through an illusionary wall and he was promptly killed by three vampires waiting on the other side. Half of us died and half of the vampires died in total. We actually chased one of the vampires through the castle and had to fight three battles at once by the time we stopped! We had to retreat because it turning from night into day. We never expected to have to battle the masters in the middle of the day! Unfortunately we never finished the adventure because the DM stopped running. The next game was going to have the Vampires rally their spawn and attack the nearby town we were staying in that we were supposed to free from their hold. What a mess.

I'ts fine to talk about adventures you have either DMed or played in ... but only if they are set in the Forgotten Realms. Homebrew and Ravenloft have their own forums.
