Hi

I'm thinking of running Sons of Gruumsh as my first time DMing, but I need to run it in the North, instead of the Moonsea region.

Any ideas on how and where to move it?

I'm thinking of Luskan.

As a Bad City, it seems to be a close match for Melvaunt. The quarrelling merchant lords could be replaced by the High Captains, and the Zhents by the Kraken Society or the Arcane Brotherhood.

If I take Neverwinter Nights* as canon, then all the High Captains are dead, as well as most of the Arcane Brotherhood, so I can fill the void with ambitious scheming merchant lords, and need only change their names and a few details. (Any reason why those High Captains have been ruling for 60 years? They must be near 90.)

The Orc citadel could be placed in the Spine of the World mountains, there's plenty of Orcs in there.

Has there ever been an Orc Empire in the North? The FRCS says the Luskan is based on the site of the Orc realm of Illuskan, but I found some 2E sources that say that Illuskan was originally founded by Ruathym settlers. Though checking the history, there seem to have been numerous hordes of Orcs over the millenia smashing up the place. I guess this Orc realm refers to the most recent occupation.

So, does that sound okay? Are there any better places to move Sons of Gruumsh to?

Thanks.

As much as I liked NWN I would not take it as canon, instead I'd stick to what it says in FRCS. But it is your game and if you feel it's ok then go with it. You would have to take into consideration that Neverwinter is also pretty much smashed up if you follow NWN story.

Yeah. :) A great big army of monsters marched right through the North and killed a lot of people, the governments of several cities had major shake-ups... but they got better. Neverwinter certainly did.

I think Neverwinter Nights might even be canon - there was a book:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0786918160/203-0496447-0450360
But it's apparently been indefinitely delayed or cancelled. Yet my local library claims to have it.

The year is 1375 which will give the area some time to clean up anyway.

I'm going to replay NWN to catch up on the story. Just need a character...

Sounds fine, BadCatMan. The events of the Neverwinter Nights single-player game are non-canonical, the cancelled tie-in short story collection notwithstanding.

Evil folk hang on to power and buy magic to prolong their lives to do so.

As a general point, the regions the simplified terminology used in the FRCS calls 'the North' and 'the Moonsea' are more properly called, by Realms folk, 'the Sword Coast North' and 'the Moonsea North'. 'The North' is used in different senses depending on where the speaker resides.
