When yes. What kind of music do you like?

I listen to:
Fliehende Stürme (a german depro-punk band/ ex-ChaosZ)
Cinema Strange (a californian deathrock/batcave band)
X Mal Deutschland (a german goth-band)
Zadera (a german gothic-pogo band)
The Deep Eynde ( deathrock from arizona?)

Midnight Syndicates Official D&D Soundtrack
Crimson Skies (soundtrack for the video game--it is surprisingly excellent)
Best of Wagner
Lord of the Rings
Escaflowne
Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow
and a few mixes I have made from miscellaneous themes from various fantasy & sci-fi movies.

There is a good album you can get called "The Fantasy Album" that is sort of a "best of" compilation of fantasy soundtracks.

12-05-04, 07:29 PM Somehow, I always wanted to play a session in Westgate or Skullport with a cool jazz soundtrack like Lift to the Scafhold by Miles Davis...

I think it's great for those shady areas full of secretive people like the two areas mentionned above. But that's just me and I'm weird.

And what about the soundtrack of Wizard of Oz when the PCs are traveling on the Golden Way?

12-05-04, 07:47 PM I'm impressed if you can maintain a Realms atmosphere while playing gothic-pogo music. Most of the film soundtracks also mentioned are too familiar for that purpose: if they don't remind of the particular film, they evoke the expectations of modern Hollywood movies in general. Instead, I'm putting together a library of music that sounds like music played *in* the Realms -- see "Music of the Forgotten Realms" (Dragon #123) and kuje's compilation of recent Ed Greenwood posts.

If I go for what is actually being played, I find that folk music collections work nicely.

I used "O Death" from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack for a particular priest's song at a funeral (No, he wasn't a Myrkulite or Kelemvorite- he worshipped Hoar)

If I'm going for mood music, I stay away from anything with lyrics, including lyrics in foreign languages, with one exception- Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies" gets played whenever there's a bar brawl, not because it fits the mood, but because it's just situationally appropriate.

Otherwise, I stick to Wagner's lesser-known stuff, instrumental folk tunes, the soundtrack to Ken Burns' Civil War series, and stuff along those lines.

Basicaly we listen to backround music, not falling into Kenny G trash.
NEVER listen to heavy metal or so, not because we don't like it, but because it's hard to have it on background...
Thou it may sound musicaly challenged, the music from 'Cafe del Mar', a collection of Chill Out music seems to work fine, not incomodate anyone and still fill those empty spaces in play.
We don't listen to "RPG inspirational music" as we call it...

12-05-04, 10:15 PM I played some Cradle of Filth while running an adventure in Baator... Coupled with blacklights. But, I don't think that counts, since it's not in the Realms. But I thought I'd say it. :)

12-07-04, 12:43 AM Do not expect any of the Lord of the rings soundtracks to cover an entire session. Patience runs VERY short with the same old thundering crescendoes and recurring building suspense. Especially when the dm keeps stopping and saying "Wait, wait, this bit is my favourite... Oooooohh"

I prefer music from the Final Fantasy games, as they're already designed to filter through the background. :cool:
Actually, if you can download and burn, I suggest these tracks~

Jenova theme (FF7 game music) Excellent 'final battle/boss music'
'Sunshine Recorder' by 'Boards of Canada' Head screwy dream-sequence/alien plane music. Will creep players out.
'The Piano' soundtrack has some pretty excellent work on it too, but you're relying on the fact that nobody's seen the film.
'Moya' by 'Godspeed You Black Emperor' would make a pretty cool theme song to have in the background, and unlike most songs, it's long enough to sustain with a dnd game.

That should freak out the players in a question of seconds. When i listen to that classic harmony I always remember that movie, and that could be bad it that happens to the players as well. It's like listening to "A little less conversation" and not remembering Ocean's Eleven, or The Mission with Ennio Morricone, or Vangelis in Chariots of Fire. Those are songs that have a film inprinted in our minds, so I wouldn't sponsorship those...

If you can keep the volume down Metallica, mix out the vocals on ride the lightning and master of puppets and evil will never ever win....
