My Dream Halloween Costume! [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, I have no Halloween costume, so no trick-or-treating for this too-old kid this year. (As far as I'm concerned, you're never too old to go out and get free candy from suckers who'll hand it out. :D ) But next year, I go all out! I have 365 days to assemble what I need for the ultimate drow ranger disguise! YES! That's right, Realms lovers! Next Halloween, Drizzt Do'Urden walks the streets of suburban New Jersey, with his faithful panther partner at his side! (In figure form, of course. *ahem* :embarrass )

Things I will have to assemble:

1 - A pair of replica scimitars! Luckily, Icingdeath and Twinkle are easy to obtain over the internet, provided you're over 18 and can legally purchase such cutlery (I'm 19, so no sweat). Unluckily, they run about $200 each... plus leather straps to hang the scabbards off your belt with.

2 - Black face paint! All visible skin must be as coal!

3 - Purple colored contacts! (I don't even want to think how much that will cost...

4 - A green, hooded cloak with brown/white fur shoulders, passable for Ranger garb.

5 - Medieval-style clothing passable for ranger garb, complete with old-style, durable boots.

6 - I'll need to buff up a bit...

7 - And I'll need to find some means of pointing my ears. How much does Orlando Bloom's LotR makeup person cost, I wonder?

8 - A white wig, long-haired, but of proper style so as to look drow-rangerish.

My costume for 2009: Errtu. Any suggestions? :P

Hm. Would wooden bows be too expensive? I was in the archery club back when I attended high school, but I never bothered to find out how much they cost. Bows would be a good tool to make the costume believable.

But in Korea, carrying a bow is illegal and is subject to immediate arrest (any sort of weapons are illegal in Korea). I don't know what the law is in New Jersey, but take care :)

I'd be a drow priestess of Lolth, but this year I had no reason to dress up. *shrug*

I doubt there's a law against a bow, though there might be a problem with arrows. In any case, there's no harm in carrying a pair of scimitars that come packaged unsharpened, anyway, unless, of course, I go to the trouble of sharpening them. An unsharpened sword is but a costume prop. (Sure, it's metal, but so's the neighbor's rake, and that's a far more effective weapon.) I don't want to use a bow, tho', as Drizzt rarely uses one prior to The Orc King.

Ah, so good to meet one of my own. Perhaps we'll even wind up playing D&D sometime down the road, though neither of us will know it. Contrary to what my close friends tell me, I do not look like a miniature giant space hamster in real life. :embarrass

Are you, by any chance, anywhere within the vicinity of the RiverLINE that runs from Camden to Trenton? (That's a large area to cover, so I doubt there's any harm admitting that much on the forum.)

EDIT: By the way, not that I'm complaining (being a straight male and all), but the typical image of a drow priestess is rather, um, revealing. Are you sure that's an appropriate costume to wear around the kiddies? :P

Hell, here in America, you can carry just about anything, and people still use the bow to hunt legally. Those guys that hunt Black Bears in appalachia with a bow are damned brave.

Hunting the big boys, i.e. the Grizzly is illegal because they are endangered.

I was Raistlin Majere back in high school. Costume looked pretty good I thought, of course no one but me knew who I was.......

Hey, Rinonalyrna, I am in Essex County NJ. If you are looking for a group let me know, my fiance wants to play but the group is all male and she feels uncomfortable. Maybe another female would convince her to play....

PM me if you are interested.

Damn it all to the Nine Hells and back! :censored: :headexplo :banghead:  :hoppingma

I can actually find my way to that mall, too...! I'll have to confirm whether or not they're really not doing them anymore, but if that's the case... well, I'd have to repeat the above smilie combination. :P

You know, if you still play and don't mind breaking in a newbie, I'd like to get in on it. If you either have a bunch of friends or don't mind playing with only yourself and myself, that is. I can't bring much to the table as far as players go, see--only me and very occasionally my school-bound younger brother. Possibly my step-dad too (he's a 1E oldie with no 2E or 3E experience that I know of and no knowedge of the Forgotten Realms to speak of), but no promises. In any case, PM me if you're interested and we'll see what we can arrange. If not, oh well (but I'm still going to have to repeat the above smilie combo).

Is hard. I'm in PA for college until May, and after that is grad school. I have no clue how long I'll be around in between. But let's keep in contact!

Same for DMD.

Right now, me and my other half (has all of the same majors/minors as I do, but mixed around - also huge 2E fan) are whipping up a quick world to play in for the month or he'll still be around.

Grad school wise? Right now, in America, I'm looking at U-Cal (San Fran) [CA, Mecca of Gay], U Wash (probably won't get in), Case-Western Reserve, and U Wisconsin. Checking out Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden for classes that are actually taught in English, too - I'm not sure I'd be okay with being taught graduate level physics in another language, even if I do pick them up fairly easily.

Well at some point when the wrmer summer months roll around it would interesting to have the NJ Board people get together, putting names to faces and what not.

Yes, my fiance' lives in Bayonne, the landfills are not pleasant, damn turnpike.
There is plenty to do if you like to eat at restaurants in Jersey though.

Good luck getting into the school you want there Dan, I have one last degree to go and I am done (of course I have been saying that for 10 years now...).

How big was his pile o' beer cans when you caught him? I think I saw the Jersey Devil, too--middle-aged, fat, looks kinda like Elminster without the hat and red robe?--he used to hang out in my local backwoods a lot, but at some point he just disappeared. Maybe that was you catching him. :P

Aw, shucks. Well, I can certainly wait that long--hey, maybe you and I can try out 4E together, it comes out right around the time you'll be available. ^_^' Oh, well...

As for me? I'm semi-unemployed with no college schedule to speak of, so I've got WAY too much time on m' hands... :(

And here I thought they were Hockey Players. :P

Personally, I think he is related to the more southern Mothman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothman) - probably of the same genus if not the same actual creature. Both may also be part of the same family group as Chupacabra, although that creature is not always depicted with wings, and is usually somewhat smaller.

There are enough goblin animals to keep us busy without looking for cryptids like Mothman (more like Owlman) or the Jersey devil. (Not that I'm not fascinated by them myself, just that I deal more with real devils than lost spirits like these.)

This guy (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sTWCt4DehKI) makes me ashamed to be a wol :weep: :weep:.

On topic: great idea for a costume. Be careful about carrying weapons round a populated urban or suburban area though, times will be tougher when we get to next October so you might just like to do Drizzt without the scimitars or bows. It's just not the climate for wandering round with creative-anachronism-society weaponry when you can be arrested in this country at least for having a dodgy book in your library...like the Koran. The police are also likely not to get the references and would likely book you, I'm afraid. Wait another ten years though and then it'll be perfectly acceptable :).

Intriguing. But, um, pardon my geographic ignorance--but, where's Califon? And where are Chester, Bridgewater, and Clinton? ^_^' In short: how far from the Beverly/Delanco/Riverside/Cinnaminson area?

Unsharpened scimitars on a halloween costume won't get me more than a question from a passing cop, I'd wager. Besides, my billowing green ranger cloak would hide them most of the time, unless I was brandishing them just to feel the sheer coolness of being Drizzt Do'Urden. (I would be sure to carry my copy of "The Orc King" on my person, however, as a precaution--if nothing else, they'll see that the scimies are replicas.)

The thing is, having scimies belted to an obviously fantasy-oriented, pointy-eared costume would not look all that off. They sell those kinds of props for just that purpose, and it's not an overly odd sight. It might not even occur to that passing cop to think there might be an actual blade on the scimitar, let alone a sharp one.

Newark is off the Parkway exit 145, need to take 280 East to get there.
It can also be reached off of the Turnpike on Exit 15E & W.

Tis about 30 minutes from New York by car and about 20 minutes by the Path train or NJ Transit from Penn to Penn.

That was probably more information than you needed, but everything in Jersey is based on its location vis a vis Parkway and Turnpike exits. :D

Personally, I live over an hour away from the Parkway or Turnpike, so I never really reference either.

Again, to all you fine New Jerseyites out there, give me a holler if you are interested in putting together a NJ-based FRCS Gaming Group ... or even just a coffee house get-together group where we can talk about the Forgotten Realms and D&D over a cappucino or two. :whatsthis Either way, let's get our fix of the Realms with a similar welcoming mind (or minds)!
