My first 2e book [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-01-05, 08:42 PM So I just recieved my first ever second edition book, and even though it could actually fit in any edition(seriously, no stats whatsoever), just flipping through it just shows me the appreciation for the lore.

Why did I have to miss the golden age of the realms?

3e as a better rules set is pure opinion. :)

08-02-05, 09:04 AM I think 3E as a base is a better ruleset. I don't mind the BAB, saving throws, and skills. Heck, I don't even mind feats.

But as soon as it started to expand to encompass campaign-specific aspects (Elven High Magic, for example), it just started to stomp all over everything.

I am now glad that WotC did not continue Planescape, because I think their incessant need for balance would have zonked it into oblivion.

Also: WOOT WOOT! A convert! ;)

08-02-05, 09:24 AM Don't forget about those free 1E/2E downloads. They are off the main FR website. There is a lot of old lore out there. I can also highly recommend getting many of the $5 .pdf downloads out there on the web.

The book is Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, and Skullport is somewhere in transit.

I've heard, it didn't sell well when it first came out, but I can't immagine this.
When I first bought it, I wasn't even playing in the realms.

08-02-05, 05:55 PM I don't much care for downloads. After downloading the villian's lorebook and scanning through it, i've found that a physical book is much more enjoyable than a pdf file

Like the search function, I can type in "Mythal" and search all the .pdfs in my FR folder, and every instance "mythal" was written will be shown to me. :)
Trust me, this can come in handy when debating something on these boards. :D

That, and those on that page are free :) Can't beat the price. ;)
In my perfect world, I'd have both a hard copy and a .pdf of every FR book. :D

Bah, you and your fangled pdf's. We used to have to memorize things and we liked it! :) Actually, most of my answers come from memory and not that fangled search feature. :)

Oh, I know.
But having diminished ability to memorize, being 36 and over the hill and the deminished brain capasity (Middle age charicters really get a +1 to int? We cant remember anything) I need all the help I can get. ;)

Also, considering the weakness of some of my “arguements”, the .pdfs don't always help. :P
(don't take this seriously, please I kind of disagree that 35 is middle aged :eek: )

I only keep a few books next to me that are pertinent to what appears to be a long string of discussions I get involved in. (Traditionally, this is F&P and sometimes Magic of Faerun for spellfire).

But on my 'puter, I have the 3.0 and 3.5 SRDs, and various .PDFs that I can access. ;)

08-02-05, 09:03 PM When I get off the $20 a month (I'm unable to work due to age, and i have to pay part of the DSL bill), I plan to get some more Realms books, but right now I'm stuck with CotSQ, CoS, RoF, FRCS,PGtF, AWRC, F&P, and my novels, plus some core books.

Yup. :) So usually once a week I put away the books I don't "need". :)

08-03-05, 12:59 AM I agree, I do wish 3E Forgotten Realms had more of the fluff that 2E had. Though I have to admit, I do like seeing balance and better rules, which is where 3E has top priority. And I do like to have game statistics for my fluff. Kinda sucks to have a player aspire to be an Elven High Mage when, well, you're stuck without rulesets for Elven High Magic.

Personally, WotC should've made all their FR books pure fluff-content, and every year or half a year release a huge, $40 book similar to the FRCS (many pages, really small font, as little artwork as possible if any at all) that contained all the rules and crunch.
