| Khaira07-27-07, 02:02 AM | In my Waterdeep campaign presently, I'm working on a campaign arc that will eventually lead the PCs into more nautical adventures; that is to say, they will be sailing on the ocean, doing some ship boarding/assaults, and engaging in some other intrepid nautical activities. I'm using the Stormwrack book, which is an immensely important aid for what I am attempting to accomplish, but I'm uncertain about ships in the Forgotten Realms. There's not very many ships in the PHB that are designed for pirate assaults and/or combat (outside of the warship), and there's nothing in any Forgotten Realms books I've consulted (outside of the Halruuan skyship, and I doubt *that* would be in use in Waterdeep). In various Drizzt novels (the ones where Wulfgar is working on coming back to the Companions of the Hall), Captain Deudermont, a pirate hunter commissioned and operating out of Waterdeep, who sails the Sea Sprite is introduced. Salvatore had described this ship as being specially modified (for speed, mobility, and offense) for attack on the ocean. What I'm wondering: Are there any specifications for "custom" ships in the Forgotten Realms? Have there been any products where Forgotten Realms-specific ships have been introduced? Similarly, have pirate organizations specififc to the Forgotten Realms been introduced before? |
| Old Sage07-27-07, 04:20 AM | You'll want copies of Pirates of the Fallen Stars and Sea of Fallen Stars. Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast [as well as most other sourcebooks dealing with the North] provide lore on pirates and their activities in the Realms coastal regions. Another useful source for information on particular ships in the Realms... is Port of Ravens Bluff which has an entire section devoted to specifically named ships of various types, and referencing their crews also. Empires of the Shining Sea and the Lands of Intrigue box sets, as well as Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II and the 1e/2e FR boxed sets, along with the FRCS [which features lore on the Nelanther Isles]. The Corsairs of the Great Sea is also a useful supplement, from the "Al-Qadim" product line, featuring lore on pirates and ships operating in the Zakharan setting. Ed's also covered the subject of pirates and piracy in the Realms -- see his compiled replies at Candlekeep. |

The type of vessel (caravel, longship, etc...) and primary port of call" |

| Khaira07-27-07, 04:13 PM | Thanks. Those are useful resources that I'll definitely have to look into. Does anyone know if Deudermont's Sea Sprite has ever been statted out? |
| Fillow07-27-07, 04:40 PM | It's a is a three masted Schooner... Curiously, Sea Sprite is also mentioned in Port of Raven's Bluff . It appears that the ship was crafted by Elwin Elrod McAllister. After earning the enmity of the rulers of Luskan, McAllister left the Sea of Swords for a new home in Westgate. Presumably, he sold the Sea Sprite to Captain Deudermont at this time. Nothing else up to now from me ! |
| MarkusTay6307-27-07, 09:55 PM | Look for information on all of the above in upcoming CK articles. ;) |
| Khaira07-27-07, 11:02 PM | CK? I didn't know Calvin Klein was doing D&D articles! ;) All right, seriously ... what's the acronym "CK" short for? |
| Old Sage07-27-07, 11:05 PM | Markus is referring to the Candlekeep Compendium -- a compilation of Realmslore articles written by some of the scribes at the Candlekeep.com website. See my sig for the link. |
