My party of 3 fifth-level adventurers (Sorc, Cleric & Fighter) have now reached Icewind Dale and I'm going crazy trying to think of a unique module for them that wouldn't clash with the area. Right now they're stopped off at a small village, but very soon the campaign is going to pick up again and I need something to throw into the mix. The style of the players is one of middle ground--they don't mind hack 'n slash as long as it has some pure roleplaying mixed in for balance. They've just come out of a dungeon, so I'm thinking something along the lines of an adventure that takes place outdoors or mainly focuses on a town.

Any ideas????

Maybe you can put a diplomatic/political adventure, you know how unstable is the relationship among the Ten Towns.

Maybe send them to Auvandell (See Silver Marches page 16) to be agents of
Sundabar and deal with getting caravans thru the Silverymoon Pass, humanoid
and other threats. Maybe an orc leader is uniting the tribes (secretly) and using them to attack caravans to equip themselves and carve out an empire.
Mountains also would be home to giants, other large creatures as well as home of reclusive mad wizards, entry to underworld (drow, mind flayer) and
abandoned(?) temples, cities, etc.

I love the idea of Auvandale, but I don't have the Silver Marches book yet. I'll tell you how it turns out once I get it! (The book is coming in the mail from Amazon)

Do you want to stay in the Icewind Dale area or range southeast into the Silver Marches proper?
Icewind Dale and the Marches (and the whole norther Sword Coast) are well described (although a bit outdated) in the 2nd Ed "The North" set (quite large .pdf with maps and TONS of descriptions of places/people/towns/power centers etc.) which is available as a free download:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads
Click on "The North" at the bottom.
Also check out "Volo's Guide to the North" and "The Savage Frontier" for lots of additional information.

If you're staying in Icewind Dale there are only so many interacting powers: The Reghedmen barbarians (think Wulfgar from the Icewind Dale Trilogy), the dwarven clan of Kelvin's Cairn (related to Bruenor), the various beasts of the area (tundra yeti, winter wolves, white dragons, orcs, etc.), the leaders of the Ten Towns, and various traveling merchants from far away lands. I would expect there to be some forgotten crypts scattered about too with the usual liches and other undead. One interesting possibility would be emissaries from the Host Tower of the Arcane in Luskan are trying to gain more influence in the Ten Towns and could be either aided or detered by the PC's. Or maybe a Thayan enclave is hoping to set up shop somewhere in Ten Towns and arcanists from Luskan will stop at nothing to make sure that doesn't happen. The Zhentarim are everywhere so that might be hatching a plot in the Icewind Dale area as well.
