Need advice on becoming a Harper... [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-04-03, 07:39 PM I am a pc in a campaign that is taking place in the Silver Marches area and am interesting in becoming a Harper....There are a few problems though....I am a dwarf from Citadel Adbar and am 2/2 Fighter/Cleric....but my character really admires Lady Alustriel and the Harpers and actually helped a dying one out (in-game)....so any opinions on the possibility of a dwarf from adbar becoming a Harper? If so how do I approach my DM about it??

08-04-03, 07:52 PM Hmm, you don't join the Harpers as I see it, they recruit you. I guess keep working in a way that they would like and maybe make contact with a higher ranking figure and perhaps they'll find some suitable tasks for you. If they liek you, they'll probably ask you to join.
As for approaching your DM, just tell him your long term aim to join the Harpers. If you act in the right way, he'll most likely reward you. A DM should try to please his players and reward them appropriately.

08-04-03, 07:52 PM If there are Harper elements in the campaign already, convey your admiration in the game and see if your DM responds. If not, tell him out of character about this interest. Since Harpers rarely disclose their membership, it's more usual for potential Harpers to be approached than the other way round. To quote FOR4 The Code of the Harpers (http://store.yahoo.com/svgames-store/tsr9390esd.html) -- an essential volume for using the Harpers in your campaign -- Player characters wishing to join the Harpers could begin merely as friendly informants. All that is required is a willingness to work as Those Who Harp do, risking danger for a chosen cause, and a freedom from evil (in personal alignment). Unless they are fortunate to befriend one of the Harpers of Shadowdale, and work themselves into a position of aiding or working for one of the powerful, secretive senior Harpers there, PCs trying to join the Harpers must either go to Twilight Hall, or theyíll be sent there.The Harpers include members of all demihuman races, if you're concerned about that.

08-04-03, 07:57 PM The most important thing about saying it to the dm is that the other players shouldnt know. Unless of course they are becoming harpers as well. It is a secret organisation so you should maintain that. This hepls the rp value as well.

Keep helping harpers and going about quests that fit in with their general policies. As in go fight the zhentarim and so forth. Doing this kind of thing will get their notice and they will perhaps make contact.

I am now reading through the chapter on how to join the Harpers....I guess I was just concerned with not being a bard/ranger and being a dwarf...I have read about the Harpers in several books, including the FR Campaign Setting book and the Silver Marches book and it seemed to stress that it was more for bards/rangers and humans and elves....but Ill read the ESD and see....thanks for the tips too:cloud9:

Don't fret I currently have a Dwarven Fighter/Cleric/Divine Champion from Mithral Hall who has been recruited by the Harpers to do some seek and destroy work for them. (The whole party was created when all our PCs were grouped together for the Harper mission).

It's a matter of getting noticed, and knowing about the areas around you. Eg if there was/is trouble around Citadel Adbar who better than a local Fighter/cleric to help out? Try to feed information to the harpers about disturbances, e.g. the campaigns you go on, what evil is about the Silver Marches etc.

Helping a dying Harper was a good boost for your profile.You are now known to them,this is the foot in the door a reason to be contacted by the Harpers.

Try and create a background for your PC that incorporates having travelled around a bit. This will give you something to go to your DM with at least. Showing your DM that you have an interest in the areas that the harpers try to protect.

If you do have success heed Sorcerous Jacks words closely. It is a secret group. :smirk:

It's interesting my character Dorn was sent from Citadel Adbar to Rauvenwatch Keep to become part of the Argent Legion....He has gone to Silverymoon and back several times and the surrounding area and his party is currently stationed to patrol the Everlund pass which goes from Everlund to Silverymoon....

This is how I helped a Harper out....I was travelling with a friend when we came upon a Harper that was grieviously injured...he gave me a stone and told me to guard it with my life and dont tell anyone....I am now being persued by many evil parties and I know why but my companions dont know whey our party keeps getting targeted....

So I dont want to bring too much attention to myself or my party but Dorn has a lot of admiration and respect for Lady Alustrial of Silverymoon and the Harpers....

My DM knows that I am interested in joining the Harpers somehow and Im sure he will help me in doing just that..
