Need Book Recommendation [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-26-07, 08:25 PM Almost finished with The Legend of Drizzt series (at least as it is at the moment) and am looking for a new book or series of books to read. To give you an idea of what I like, I enjoyed both The Legend of Drizzt and War of the Spider Queen (up to book 3; after that it just went downhill), though it doesn't have to be about the drow. I just like the mood and atmosphere, as well as the mature story telling in those books. I would like to find well-written books that deal with the epic characters of Faerun, that are neither trite and flashy with their good guys rule and the world is a sweet sweet place, nor dark to the point that it's obvious the author is uncreative and thinks if he writes about sodomy that he will be looked upon as a visionary and controversial writer. Any ideas? Thanks.

07-26-07, 10:37 PM You sound like a perfect candidate for the both the Sembia series and Paul Kemp's novels (The Erevis Cale Triology and The Twilight War Triology).

Edit: But then I'm easy when it comes to FR novels. I mostly read for the lore. I can only think of one FR novel I didn't like how it was written, and that was the Nether Scroll. Still liked it for the lore though. =)

07-29-07, 01:33 PM I started the Moonshae trilogy (the first Forgotten Realms novels). I like Darkwalker on Moonshae, but I read it long ago, so it's kind of foggy, but I think I could remember most of it. I started Black Wizards, but barely got into that. I keep telling myself to get around to reading it, but I'm readinf The Sellswords Trilogy (Artemis & Jarlaxle) and The Hunter's Blades Trilogy. I'm on Promise of the Witch King (Sellswords book 2- a little more than halfway through) and The Lone Drow (which I haven't even started, though I looooved The Thousand Orcs. The anticipation!)

07-30-07, 09:48 PM You also might want to check out the Cleric Quintet and Sellswords series, which, like the Legend of Drizzt, are written by R. A. Salvatore.

Notes:
1) Sellswords series takes place between Legend of Drizzt books and the end of Salvatore's Hunter's Blade Trilogy (which will eventually be chronicled in Legend of Drizzt, I'm sure).

2) Cleric Quintet takes place before LoD book Passage to Dawn.

07-31-07, 09:56 AM Yes, and remember that you should read The Servant of the Shard after The Spine of the World. I made that mistake and I was all kinds of confused. I believe that The Promise of the With King takes place during The Thousand Orcs, and The Road of the Patriarch takes place during The Two Swords. I haven't read The Cleric Quintet yet (hehe), but I really want to, it's just that i can't find one book store that has all 5 of them, but instead the Collector's Edition. I don't like collector's editions to much of anything because they make the pages thinner and too easy to tear, and I don't want to risk that at all, so I haven't opened my Hunter's Blades Collector's Edition twice. Yeah, you can call me a freak. It's got a killer illustration on it, though. My worst fear right now is that I'll lose interest in Drizzt during the year long gaps between books. Yes, very frightening. Also, which books contain short stories by R.A. Salvatore, because I keep finding references in the books to some people in these short stories, like Neshkee the goblin with Drizzt (or something like that) and a shade encounter with Artemis Entreri.
