I'm looking to start a bit of a different type of Forgotten Realms game for my players. The goal is to have 'the bad guys win' and control a large area of Faerun. I need some help figuring out how to accomplish my goal, since I don't know much about FR.
Here's what I'm looking to do:

The Player Characters are going to start at 3rd level.

Between 3rd and 10th level they are going to fight a Half Fiend, his minions (including a Fiendish Gnoll captain), minor demons, and elementals.....I want this to occur in a 'colder/arctic' area of Faerun.

By 10th level, I want to have them back near the Dalelands to run City of the Spider Queen.

I only own the Campaign Setting Book, Silver Marches, and City of the Spider Queen.

Where can I 'place' my campaign on the world so that while the character's are doing all of this, they experience some of the notable bad guys in the Realms gaining power ?

Thanks.

I would say go with the Silver Marches. There's what's left of Hellgate Keep, so there's your fiends and half fiends and demons. Elementals can be called up there also. It's a colder/arctic area also.

Then later move them down to the dalelands. :)

Aside from the Cold/arctic part, I would have suggested the Border Kingdoms as there's already a demon on the loose trying to carve out a kingdom and it's easy for those with the resources to achieve things, plus there's a city controlled by the clergy of Cyric, I think, giving plenty of scope.
If you want cold weather then you're pretty much restricted to the North, the Moonsea and the Coldlands but I should think you could fit it into any of those without too much problem, although the Zhents do already have a large amount of power in the Moonsea.

The silver marches area is a great place to start. Hellgate keep and all that. You may want to check out the wizards download page. Sure it is all 2ed, but much of it is great to help out the ambiance of the setting. Volo’s guide to the north, Savage frontier, Volo’s guid to the Dalelands and The North.

Use the Moonsea and Vaasa regions. The Zhents control a lot of the resources in the rural Moonsea area and Vaasa is mostly wind-swept stone-lands populated by orcs and worse.... The Dales are to the immediate south...
And remember in these areas the the bad guys win!:D

Thanks for the suggestions! Great info folks!

What city would you base the characters out of if I decide to go with the Moonsea/Vaasa area ?

What about the Silver Marches ?

I suggest having the Thayans conquer Mulhorand.

A lot of the big cities on the Moonsea are terribly racist against Demi-humans.

What classes and races does the party of PCs consist of?

Hard to say right now. The player's haven't created their characters (The game is going to be August 22nd, 23rd, and 24th).

Probably 2 humans, a half drow, and a dwarf if I was guessing, although the player's might surprise me.....I'm going to let them play what they want within the FR guidelines as long as they are prepared to deal with any roleplaying consequences.

In Vaasa the small city of Darmshall is a likely place to start your adventure (FRCS Pg. 110). It is predominetly neutral but that is easily changed. Being an arctic outpost-city it 's primary concern is usually continued sustanance so if this city was pressed by your half-fiend the populace might contract adventurers to meet the challenge... As you head south to the Moonsea you will notice that, yes, many of the cities there are racist toward demi-humans, some going so far as to slaving them for gladitorial events (Hillsfar).
It seems to me that is what you're looking for, correct? The bad guys - for the most part - have won in this area. A few communities around the Moonsea are good-aligned if you needed a break from the hectic pace of evil cities and peoples; Thentia is open-minded with their powerful, magic oriented government. Elventree is a small forest redoubt on the south side of the Moonsea and home to many Harpers. It is close to Cormanthyr and, in turn, close to the Dales....
just some ideas.... good luck!:D
