The latest news in my campaign. The PCs are in the City of Hills Edge. They arrive via teleport in a prison under a temple of Bane. Defeated a Cleric and Zhentarim guards, freed members of the City guard. They spent some time selling items and buying equipment. While selling some gems and jewelry the Paladin of the group found a wanted poster which was posted just outside the shop. While requiring within the shopkeeper explains to them that a very valueable gem had been stolen. The only clue was a small piece of torn clothing. They traced it back to a seamstress shop. One of the women did indeed repair a cloak made with the same material. The PCs are setting up ambushes in the city hoping the thieves will fall into their hands.
My question to you all is what can I use as a motive for the Fire Knives to take this valueable gem? I know from the sourcebooks that the Fire Knives are more or less murderers but that it all the books say about them.

maybe the Gem used to be in one of the Crown Jewels of Corymr and they want it because the Crown of Cormyr ALSO wants it.

the fire knives aren't just murders, they are a guild of theives and assasins dedicated to destroying the royal family and nobility of cormyr.
