| Airicx_Evanara01-11-08, 11:39 PM | I like coming up with names, and I noticed that most people I game with have a hard time coming up with anything. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they suck. Sometimes they're... eh. Off the top of my head (well... with some from stored names on my cpu) I've put together a list of the names we've used in the past for characters, NPCs, monsters, even Gods. If you're having trouble coming up with your own, by all means, use some... or even take it and rearrange it, add something to it, minus a vowel or syllable, whatever you want. Figured I'd throw out some things for help. :D List of Names: Airicx (This is usually my main character) Halicron Magnimar Braxis Maximel Mephisto Nymphus Vleyzhen Stalus Thorquain Kassiar Ahmistius Slaygrim Shazograx Alafan Ezmyst Hordrifel Lokimar Tiryn Kazmere Cyrrock Amos Ralu Ahman Asad Ios Calan Calanthius Kaenthair Szanel Verafaust Ilhond Alexius Xearth Xadlear Zvarxus Eraztulg Xul Nyzroth Rulas Lavayatos Drisilia Psyloth Ellyth Myrista Syranthalas Scraag Desmeara Cerysius Dulysst Varios Unheraster Crail Ishnail Sadyth Septeiryn Aosha Archemedius Chalyn Issek Learan Soulk Terroshar Tzuelguru Vyrmear Huitzil Kastian Kyceas Levashtri Lunaries Arcander Herovian Duuntach Myrild Mordrifein Dantifein Treverick Galleon Hrolfmir Echovir Kafar Braedin Letherius Khalia |

I, for instance, like names/words with either a "ts" (like "tsar"), or an "ae." So names I create have those sounds in them more than others. This list has a lot of "x" in it. I don't have a deeper meaning or some sort of moral to draw, I just find it interesting. |

| Airicx_Evanara01-12-08, 02:40 PM | I agree with what Tolkien thought and did: Names are the most important of all things, and they need a significance meaning. I've spent some time going through Latin words and such to come up with some names... but it's not as easy to make cool sounding names in such a manner. For instance, I was trying to come up with a name for a Spellweaver, and they are six armed birdlike monstrous humanoids... so I was thinking of using "Ornikali" because "Ornithology" is the study of birds and "Kali" is a six armed Indian deity. Thus that name has meaning, "Ornikali". However, it just didn't sound as cool as Slaygrim to me so I went with Slaygrim. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin01-12-08, 08:23 PM | In my opinion, if you came up with a name that you like and that works, I don't think you need to worry about it having a "deeper meaning". But if making the name all-important is your style, by all means knock yourself out.:) |
| Faraer01-12-08, 08:48 PM | If I was playing in Middle-earth, I'd choose a name with meaning in one of Tolkien's languages. The Realms isn't built philologically, though, and the linguistic elements in Faerūnian names are broadly Thorass, a language which hasn't been defined. How would a name in the Realms come to be derived from Latin roots and Hindu gods? |
| Phelf_Der_Zemit01-12-08, 10:33 PM | I go to the drow name backrounds and look up names. I like the name Sornjss, because A) it looks cool and B) it means spell slinger, a good wizard name if you ask me. I also like names the us PH to meen F sounds. as you can see by my screenname. |
| Lord Karsus01-13-08, 01:40 AM | How would a name in the Realms come to be derived from Latin roots and Hindu gods? -When a Planewalker who knows Latin and worships the Vedic pantheon gives birth on Faerūn. |
| Faraer01-13-08, 02:11 AM | I guess so. |
| Lord Karsus01-13-08, 02:13 AM | -Hey, with some of the stuff that goes on, I think that's very plausible. |
