| RedMagus07-29-04, 07:14 AM | Hello dear FR community, I am here to learn about the timeline of Faerun. It is my intention to guide my campaign on the official happenings of the present days of Faerun. In the FR Campaign Setting on page 78 is described that the most used calendar was based upon the "Dalereckoning". Question 1: Where can I read about this (what "Dalereckoning" is)? Where can I read about the standing stones? Then there is written that the years are mostly referred by a "name". And there is this timetable: 1372 DR The year of wild magic 1373 DR The year of rogue dragons 1374 DR The year of lightning storms Also at the bottom of page 260 it is written that by two months RL Faerun advance by five months. Question 2: Where can I read about the "official" happenings of the "year of wild magic"? What is the plot for the forthcoming years of Faerun as there were three years now after the release of FR Campaign Setting 3rd ed. so there have to be some informations about the 1373 and newer years somewhere? I know there is a big timetable in the FR book. But I am interested in the present days of Faerun as my campaign is set in the year 1372 and the player characters are between 23 and 90 years old so they can (and should) know about the big happenings of Fearun as they are described by the timetable at the pages 270-271. Unfortunately I didn't found much informations about the names referred there within (as for example Xvim, Cyric and so on). Question 3: On page 271 there it is written for the date 1372 that some events signal that there will be a change of power and then the return of Bane. Where can I read about this events, what book should I buy for this informations? Thank you for reading my posting your humble RedMagus |
| RedMagus07-30-04, 02:16 AM | Excuse me, but are in my questions above a missing point? Am I in the false forum? (But I don't think so because it is a Faerun forum, right?) Or are my questions not clear enough? (I apologize for my bad English.) I just wanted to better understand the history of Fearun. yout humble RedMagus |
| Prince_Inari07-30-04, 03:28 PM | To help out some of your questions... Im not the best at this but I will give it a try. To answer most of your questions... check in the 2nd edition FR books. Such as the FR boxed sets, Faiths and Avatars etc. Iactu Xvim explodes and Bane arises again. Thats about5 the only fact I know off the top off my head. |
| Faraer07-30-04, 03:51 PM | 1. It says what Dalereckoning is right there. The raising of the Standing Stone is described on p. 124. More details are in the original Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=806&) entries for the Dalelands, Sembia, and the Standing Stone. The full Roll of Years can be downloaded here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/Roll%20of%20Years%20Table.rtf). 2. I'm not fully conversant with the recent timeline, but the events of the Return of the Archwizards and War of the Spider Queen novel series are summarized in the Player's Guide to Faerūn. The latest events are in the most recent novels. But remember that the Realms is a place of myriad small and interwoven intrigues, not an overall single plot -- don't pay too much attention to the loud explosions over there. My advice would be to set your campaign in the 1350s DR: a much more believable and interesting time, I think. The FRCS's History chapter summarizes history from dozens of sourcebooks and novels, so it's hard to direct you to expanded sources. Any events in particular? 3. The sources on Bane's return are the FRCS (look up Bane in the index) and Faiths and Pantheons. Thanks for quoting page numbers! It's much easier to answer queries when you know what information the person has already. |
| WizO_BigSister07-31-04, 08:12 AM | Can I please point out that it is very common for a thread to go unanswered for many hours. Time zones have an effect, difficulties with the current server also mean there are long periods of time when people may not actually be able to read all the threads they want to and reply to them. This is why we ask our board guests to be patient. "Bumping" or making posts just to bring the thread back to the top of the first page isn't encouraged. Our Code of Conduct (http://www.wizards.com/coc) only allows you to do this once per 48 hours. This isn't telling anyone off ... just helping people find out how things work on these forums. I don't think I have ever seen a question that never got a reply. |
| RedMagus07-31-04, 10:54 AM | So, Prince_Inari and Faraer thanks for your help! I have got the Players Guide now. What strikes me is that the recent events on Faerun are "recorded" on just six pages (read it aloud SIX pages; 166-171)! A great help for all the GMs out there who want to go in the line with the official history of Faerun. The point is that I cannot imagine the return of a big, ugly, evil god(Bane) without groundshaking changes on this world. Then the summary of the events of the "last" years (between 1300-1372DR) shows so much persons, deities and wars that it should be impossible that players who play at 1372DR 20 to 90 years old characters didn't know about the happenings. But GMs are on their own to collect the informations out of many books so that they can give a overview to the players and keep the background informations to themselfs. It is my opinion that there should be a GM Guide where these kind of informations -- what has happened in the last 100 years who was involved what are the backgrounds of these events, why were they happening (<-can you say so in English?) what are the (non player-, or monster)character stats of them the more explaining of the bigger or more important events -- can be found. You should know why I am eager to find and collect the history of Faerun: because I from time to time give my players the NPCs who are their biggest enemies and they have to plan and execute things against the world or the PCs and so on. But because my players should learn about (official)Faerun-- and this is also their own wish-- while adventuring and playing their enemies (from time to time) I want not give them some NPC who sould be officially dead because Elminster ate him yesterday for breakfast (or something like that). I know as a GM I can make that happen or not to happen but for example I already introduced Mirt as a evil, big army general (look in FRCS for more info on Mirt) and such "errors" should be minimized (at least in my campaign). I think you can now better understand my intentions. Thanks for you all! Off to compile my own GM Guide for Faerun Your Red Magus PS: @WizO_BigSister: I know the effects of the time zones, because I am posting from Germany and I think that I am talking mostly to American people here. I also didn't want to bump. But as my English is not good I wanted to know if some of my questions are so bad articulated that I should explain them further so that the people here can help me better. |
| Faraer07-31-04, 11:15 AM | I've critized that section of the PGtF before for making it look as if the history of that time *was* the events of those two novel series. Compare it to the news and rumours for 1356 and 1357 in the original Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (which I recommend getting if you want to get a feel for the Realms quickly) -- lots and lots of things going on, and often their outcome is up to your PCs. Bane was 'brought back' because he's a well-designed god who makes the setting stronger, and is popular with fans, but was 'killed off' in the Avatar Crisis (1358 DR/1989 our time) for reasons no one remembers. Many Realms readers, players and DMs are sick of the stream of 'groundshaking changes' that have proceeded since then -- that may help to explain why Bane's return wasn't heralded with novels and sourcebooks. I'd love to see a big History of Faerūn book! So would Ed Greenwood, George Krashos (author of a great timeline of the Sword Coast North (http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/TheNorthTimeline-Revised.zip)), and many others. But the current management believes, not without cause, that Realms history is a minority interest and such a book would sell less well than one that focuses on the Realms 'present' (a concept I think is invalid, but that's another story), and less well than one that contains rules-based content that appeals to non-Realms players too. Your English is pretty good and you got across what you meant. |

The news that an accessory called "Ancient Empires" is due to hit our shelves early next year may show that that attitude is no longer in effect. :) |
