| Quicknickel05-31-04, 09:17 PM | Ive always been a DM that makes the villains play by the same rules as the PCs. The party I run bought me CotSQ and they terribly want to run through it. Normally, they are a role-playing bunch, but they want some gold old hacknslash dungeon crawling and this is something they want to do. Im trying to make the module work according to the rules (terribly hard with most DnD products), and Im looking for some ideas from the realistic DMs out there on how to keep the plotline original without violating the rules. So please keep the Monte Haul, Plot Device, and Deux ex Machina explanations to a minimum (I know some of you cant help but listen to yourselves type). That said...Irae's forbiddance spell seems to have cost her approx. 180,000 gold in rare incenses. Has anyone been able to find a way for her to cast multiple forbiddance spells that cover the strategic entrances without such an extravagant outlay of expense? I am questioning her ability to sell enough magic items to have paid for this spell, and although I believe a drow city of this size might have had the loot to pay for it, it would seem Kurgoth got most of that loot. Additionally, her Great Revenance spell (I can only hope that this module will not become part of FR canon) simply doesnt work, even assuming Irae is a 21st level epic spell caster (which she is going to have to be IMC). The spellcraft DC for this epic spell is going to be in excess of 100 and she only has a few high level casters to help her out. I'm trying to work with the Temple's (obviously summoned through a miracle that cost her considerable experience) abilities to be able to explain her ability to cast this Great Revenance, but even that does not suffice. ANY help would be appreciated. |

Try not to think about how NPCs finance their defences alot of the time- its not cheap. Her great forbiddence isn't an epic spell but a ritual for the deity. Perhaps at the end of it she casts gate and Kiransalee/proxy comes though and uses a divine ability or epic spell to do it. Also the Book of Vile Darkness has sacrifice rules so just because a ritual isn't detailed in the rules doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Faith and Pantheons had rituals in it involving xp sacrifice etc for a variety of gods. Does this help? |

The forbiddance was the least of those two problems...money can be had for those with wits and boldness, though I do prefer something practical. Can you give an explanation for controlling the undead army? I'm not sure that even an avatar of Kiaransalee can control that many undead at once. After you get the undead to a place with living beings, you dont need to control them, because they will generally attack the living, but how does one rally them for another attack? How does one get them to the site of battle in the first place? |

Unintelligent undead are easily controled this way. Or if the undead are intelligent doesn't mean they're stupid. They could quite happily ally with a cleric ofa death goddess- or be destroyed if they don't ally. If you need to get them somewhere they don't need rest or you can open gates to other planes march your undead through and open another gate back on the prime material plane in a different location. |
| Shodo Panda06-02-04, 04:43 AM | The nice thing of undead is that you just let them do their thing, and you control them when the time is needed. You don't control all of them, just the 5-10 you need at that time at the place you are. I wouldn't hold it beyond Kiaransalee though to be able to control hundreds, thousands since the way she ascended to godhood if I remember correctly is by doing something similar as Irae T'Sarran is doing. If I believe correctly she turned her whole own realm into undead Isn't the tower from where she is Irae is doing this sending out waves with the same effect as rebuke undead? If not than I'll be changing it in my campaign to the following effects. 1. The tower acts as a generator for rebuke undead, (like a cellphone mast) 2. Let her control undead clerics that are powered by Kiaransalee so they can rebuke themselves. So both the undead clerics as the live clerics as the avatar can control enough undead to do this. Like stated in the previous post |
| mahaxxx06-05-04, 03:54 AM | ok try this bit... the goddess who has come from her own, utterle dead, realm has a hand in this bit. she has focused most all of her power into establishing a starting point for ruling all the underdark in lolths absence. Rules that pc's follow just dont apply to the badguys. as long as the CR is close the "where it came from" dosen't matter. concider this: whole city crushed, goddess who killed EVERYONE at home can and will provide her one big chance for world murder part 2 with everything she has (great revenance epic, god added) in order to get what she can before lolth returnes. its not built on the same rules as pc's that would make it too easy. read the whole thing and relax, it's just a modual. the baddies are supposed to be nasty.;) |
| Pathanus06-17-04, 12:57 PM | Irae can also Wish some of here dead followers back to life (5000 xp per casting), which is indicated in some part of the book. Unofficially, Irae is practically a chosen of Kiriansilee, with her Hand of the Revanancer, Spider Eye, and other nice equipment and free Super Evil Shadow Orb, Ethereal Citadel, and lots of super powerful followers. I do think that there must be some sort of divine intervention for her to acquire stuff, gain followers (who don't rebel), and cast supreme epic spells. Path |
