Notes on the Storyline/Game play

* Your PC starts in West Harbor; small, non-descript hamlet
* Several years ago West Harbor was caught in the middle of a massive battle between a entity known as the "King of Shadows" and an unknown opposing force. Your hamlet was almost decimated and would have been if not for a third player in the battle who seemed to come from no where and destroyed both the King of Shadows and his attackers.
* Since this third entity did not leave any survivors no one really knows many of the details about the whole event.
* Story starts when several strangers come to your village looking for something. It is implied it may have something to do with the defeated King of Shadows.
* You start out as a typical commoner. No one really pays much attention to you; you are no more or less special then anyone else in the village and the NPCs react as such.
* You need to build your reputation to become/be considered a 'hero'. They do not give any real specifics in the article on how you do so but they state it will not be due to repetitive 'rescue the cat' or 'fed-ex' type quests.
* Your PC can be any standard race, subrace or class.
* New Base class the 'Warlock' will be introduced in NWN2. (Complete Arcane)
* The article states the Warlock is a excellent offensive magic caster class.
* As we were already told Strongholds are in, but they are more then "window dressing". They will serve as the PCs base of operations and will be important to the main story.
* You can hire NPCs to staff your stronghold and gain benefits from such. The example given is you can hire a Scholar to research new spells while you are away on a quest.
* Companions who join you will you have their own motivation, interests and depending on your actions may open up side quests for you... or tick them off and have them up and leave. They will work similar to KotOR2 and it's influence system.

Technical Notes

* Views can be classic overhead or 3rd person view.
* Dialog is now handled via a close-up with dialog choices. But a option exists to use the classic 'word bubble' style.
* Toolset will include tutorials.
* New conversation editor allows you to now view all variables.
* New toolset allows creating cinematic cut-scenes to recording action in pre-set areas.
* There will be creatures in the toolset that are not used in the OC.
* Most environmental effects can be edited via the toolset. Such as cloud cover, sky color and wind direction. (You can even place Selūne and The Tears of Selūne as well as the sun).
* The DM client will change little.
* While not set, the max player cap is once again mentioned at ~64

Screenshot Observations

Dragon screenshot on the first page of the article

* WOW!
* The red dragon, maw open, looking down somewhat at the reader breathing flame that covers the bottom of the page.
* If there is ever a pic to make you drop your jaw and drool all over yourself this is it!
* The wings are huge, and tattered at the bottom. The detail of the dragon face and body is amazing. There is a moon in the night sky and very detailed looking trees to the right of the dragon. There is no PC in the same pic as the dragon so can not compare size. But I can not imagine it's small.

There are about a dozen other screenshots in the article, most of them smallish. Thus I will not detail each and every one but give my overall impressions.

* The first thing that stands out is the lush vegetation. Wide open fields of waist high hay/grain/grasses swaying in the wind. Large drooping trees of various types, fallen trees and very rich, full looking woods/forest. Over all on this level it seems it is going to be impressive with the choices we get.
* Only one good pic of a PC up close. The armor looks MUCH better then classic NWN. A much more 'realistic' approach one might say. You may recall many moons ago there was a debate on the Biosidian forums about putting a more LotR take on the armor/clothing. If this one pic is any indication they certainly have taken, at least to some degree, those suggestions to heart.
* Aside from Mr. Red Dragon and only other monster we see in the screens up-close are 3 Dire Boars in a field of tall hay/wheat. The details looks very nice and they look very savage and disconcerting (Which I suppose is the point). Behind them is the tree line of a forest, again ditto my above comments. It looks lush and beautiful. But (Though it may just be the transfer to print) the colors do not look overly vivid, they do look a bit washed out on the foliage. It could be the setting sun effect granted, putting a reddish haze on everything, but with the angle of the pic I can not see if that is the case. I do not see this as the case for all the other pics so I must assume there is some reason for this.
* The buildings look much more middle ages style/based and more to scale. I know certain members will be glad to hear that the buildings no longer look, from the outside, to be the square footage of a bathroom.
* There are several pics with docked ships in port. So we can confirm ship placeables (If not working) shipping with NWN 2.
* A couple pics show the obvious setting of the sun effect. it is very nice and well done from what can be seen. Of course a more detailed pic would be easier to make an assessment on this level.
* I did not see any pics with water that I could make out clearly so nothing can be said on this front.

Overall I am very confidant in the artistic direction NWN 2 is heading. In my opinion they are going for a bit more grounded approach when it comes to artistic style and that can only be a good thing. While we can only see a few screens in a reasonable size to make out fine details what we can see looks impressive. If that dragon pic does not knock you on your ass when you see it then go back to playing Dungeon Siege.

With that said I am a bit concerned with their now new found direction for the MP and Dynamic World players in the article. They seemed to be back peddling a bit on the comments made during the first interviews. (ie They went from 'more then 64' players on a server to now back to ~64.; Also no mention of database support or the 'addition tools' for DW's). While certainly this is only one interview and more are now sure to follow, this is a bit concerning to many of us I am sure. I look forward to more information on these topics as more PR is now is going to be released. Hopefully my concerns are unfounded.

So there you have it. I am going to have some one on one interviews in the near future with some well known people from the custom content community and see what they think of this. More to come on this topic soon!

And now, for the screenies!

- Your 3 henchmen/companions can be chosen from a total of 9, some of which are available only to dedicatedly good or evil characters.
- You will have to prove yourself before people start asking you to save the world/region/city.
- The closer you are to one end of the alignment-o-meters, the bigger effect it will have when you suddenly commit an act belonging to the other end.
- Quests will not include rescuing cats stuck in trees or fetching an NPC's mail.
* The level cap is set at 20.
* You cannot import nwn 1 characters into nwn 2. I'm sure this is because of difficulties in translating D&D 3.0 to 3.5.
* There are sub-races that are explicitly set up within the game engine (e.g. Aasimar provides a +charisma boost)
* There are viewer cameras that can be set up as objects within the toolset, assigned tags, and called via scripts. Sounds like a more intuitive solution than the current system, though I wonder how camera movements are handled (e.g. spinning camera around the player to show surroundings). Devs? This is completely new info as far as I know.

Heya,

I'm assuming this is a preview not a review?

Also, some of your links don't work properly.

From the pictures it looks like Morrowind? Does anyone know about the game engine? Morrowind's big problem was it had to stop after you moved a short distance to load a new area. Anyone know about this?

Ah, the dreaded curse of the Zone. Yes, I'm sure NWN2 will require you to stop and let areas load. Usually, with NWN, the game areas were fairly small, and zoning required you to click on a door or other entrance trigger first... Then you had to wait while the next area loaded.

I believe it is using an advanced version of the Aurora toolset... So I'd expect about the same from NWN2.

Note: I'm mostly ignorant about this game, since I stopped keeping track of it a while ago. Maybe I should start keeping my eyes on it again...

Yes, it will have transitions but the developers said that they did "something" to make them look seamless.

The engine is a heavily-modified Aurora engine, now called Electron.

As a addicted player of one of the server build using the nwn we can“t wait any more to change to NWN2 (of course the fact that almost all of us will have to buy a new comp is forgotten :( ).

I think that's be overly generous of you Kuje31, going off the description of NWN2 Buzzard posted its looking like its FR ties are going to be bare minimum.

Definitely looking forward to this game myself.

About those screens Buzzard is talkin about : one of them shows a big red dragon seen from the ground and with the moon at it's back ... it's been said that not only you could see the moon in the sky but also the Tears of Selune ... kindda nice isn't it ;)

Okay? What? Is it not set in FR and Neverwinter? If it is set in one of those two, then why are you arguing with me?

Those screen shots are impressive. I loved NWN1 and can't wait to see this one.

Still no release date other than 2006 right?

Q2 2006. I've started pre-production on getting my NWN module stuff converted over to NWN2.

NWN takes place in Neverwinter, in Faerun and deals with the Forgotten Realms and even includes important Forgottem Realms NPCs. I'm sure NWN2 is gonna do the same thing as it is called Neverwinter Nights. So really, how is that dealing with the Forgotten Realms? It's as much FR as any of the other DnD games set in FR, if not more.
