hi. I'm a little new. Anyway, I just got the forgotten realms campaign setting and I'm planning on running a game. I have a little prior experiance with DMing, but i suck. My biggest prob is my inability to for-plan. If any of you could throw out any stray ideas they would be much appreciated. I know its probably not a good idea but im gonna allow my players to play as the strong race people. I think I understand the rules well enough to handle it. Also I dont think my players will jump at the opertunity ( One I know is strongly against playing as one) so... any ideas? opinions? insults? anything? please?

Insults aye? Stupid newbies always asking me for help!

Now that thats taken care of.

The first thing you should do is limit yourself. Forgotten realms is a big place, and the first adventure should really be a small one, and should perhaps not have the biggest story arc you can think of.

The small adventure in the back of the FRCS is a great starter adventure. Place it in a area that you know well, and try to mix in some of the flavor of the area. Something small, describing how the people act, if the area has good or bad horses and so on. This is really what makes up forgotten realms, the details.

You might also want to get a few issues of Dungon, if you have problems creating adventures remember that fixing up a old one to fit your setting is easy, and Dungon is full of just such adventures.

FR is broad enough that you can fit most pre-made campaigns into it with some minor tweaking. All you would need to do is possibly change the name of the location, names of deities, and maybe a few flavor things. Doing that can get you more experience with DMing and all your pre-planning is just reading through the adventure so you know everything that is going to happen.
Pre-made campaigns can be short or long, so when you finish it, you can sculpt your own campaign.
