new dragons [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-22-03, 09:03 PM greetings fellow citizens of Toril. I am in the process of creating a new world for my campaign and things are going pretty well. Just one problem that you may be able to help me with.
I feel that dragons just are not quite powerful enough for my campaign see in this world short of confronting the deities the dragons will be beings that even high level adventurers will think long and hard before seeking out their hordes of treasure! any input on how to increase the potential threat of wyrmm kind would be gratefully appreciated!

07-22-03, 10:02 PM Let them use their breath weapon once ever other round or even once every round as a full round action. This alone would make them much more powerful. You could also increase their breath weapon dice by one, i.e. d6 becomes d8 and d10 becomes d12. Often, I find that spellcasters are the ones that make it easy to defeat dragons, so if you change their Spell Resistance to Hit Dice + 5 or even 10, then they are much more scary to that level 20 Wiz. You could also give them +1/5 DR every other age cat. so they end up with +6/30 DR(maybe +5/25 DR for weaker types)at Great Wyrm. (thats 3e though...)

Spellcasting improvements are also nice, you could make them cast like Sorcerers but not have spells known, meaning they have any spell you want to give them ready, which is a huge bonus. Plain old stat increases can make them more deadly, as can just increasing their saves. You could even make their breath weapon only count as a single attack, leaving them 5 or 6 other attacks per round... yikes. :eek:

Some ideas I am tinkering with are increasing thier spell casting potential by giving them 3 levels of sorcery per age catagory.increasing thier hit die by one per age catagory. what I am looking for is a foe that only high level characters would even concider confronting. Any other ideas out there for me?

where may I find info on prismatic dragons? Also I am wanting to increase the powers of all known spiecies of wyrmm kindfrom black to song dragons and all in between!

07-22-03, 10:40 PM If you can, try looking up the Monsternomicon from Privateer Press. There are lots o nice ideas on how dragons can be all powerfull and have a lot of impact in the game world.

07-22-03, 11:08 PM Prismatics are in the ELH, hehe. From what i can tell they own pretty much any other dragon... add paragon template to it and it would be pretty much unbeatable IMHO.
