Hi there everyone. Gabriel here. After many years of reading, I decided to actually join the forums. I thought I'd post an amusing story from a session I ran 2 yrs. ago.

It was 2003 and I was running a session using notes from the Baldur's Gate and Icewind
Dale PC game series into a one long epic.

At one point, the party is escorting a dwarf beserker (If you played the
game Baldur's Gate 2, you'll know who he is)during his exploration of a
particularly heinous crypt. Perfect for players who want to hack & slash
at things that were undead. This crypt was also the meeting ground for
the cult who worshipped Myrkul, a former god of the dead. So it stands
to reason that he could still have power there.

After several hours of looting tombs, caskets etc, the dwarf stops at a
rather large and bloodied door. He decides that everyone has their fill
of treasure and stuff to pawn. The players agree (seeing as how everyone
exhausted their healing potions/spells) and vote on leaving. The cleric
of Lathander disagrees. He asks the dwarf why shouldn't they go through
the door seeing as how it's the last room in the entire crypt. He wants
more treasure and items so he can start work on his own temple. The
dwarf (a thoroughly, malicious, humorously evil fellow who enjoys
fighting) actually says that the battle would be a lost cause and that
the best fighters know when to pick his battles. He also mentions that
the cult of Myrkul resides in that chamber and while they do not go
after people who loot tombs, they are quite violent when it comes to
their meeting rooms.

The cleric of Lathander(played by a friend of a friend whom I absolutely
detest. One of the most idiotic, naive and arrogant players EVER) scoffs
at this and says, "Korgan Bloodaxe... you who claim to have drank the
blood of a troll, poked out the eyes of a gorgon and stomped on the foot
of a mindflayer.. are telling me we shouldn't go in there? You are
afraid of a dead and useless god and his pitiful followers?"

The dwarf, visibly bristled, scowls and pushes past everyone. As he's
stomping past, the cleric of Mask/assassin notices he's sliding on a
ring. The dwarf kicks open the door surprising a congregation of Myrkul
clerics and anti-paladins. A rather LARGE group of juju zombies and
flesh golems are also staring at them. At a pulpit carved from stone to
resemble a pile of bones is a demilich.

Korgan: Followers o' Myrkul, though I do not follow your heathen
religion I do respect it. I offer yeh a cleric of.. no, actually a HIGH
cleric o' Lathander. Yeh know o' him, yeah. God of Life, light and all
of that rubbish.

Demilich: Why are you here?

Korgan: Because that codgy bastard (points to the cleric of Lathander
with his axe) wants to rid the world of the undead. He was goin' on
'bout cleansing the world of "those people and their filth."

The demilich roars out something unintellgible and EVERYONE turns to
face the party.

The dwarf touches his ring and it glows.

Korgan: It's been a bonny pleasure mates. I'm gone.

The cleric of Mask/assassin makes a dexterity throw and succeeds. He
grabs the Bard and rushes towards the dwarf before he teleports.

The cleric of Lathander is left alone as the horde approaches him. He
actually pulls out his holy symbol and tries to do something. As the
player is about to say something, he notices my expression and sighs.

Tom(the player): I'm pretty much dead right?
Me: No.
Tom: No?
Me: Each time you're torn to ribbons, you're resurrected then killed
again and so on and so forth.
Tom: Oh...

aftewards, he never was invited again to any of the sessions.

reading that story all i saw was an attack on another player. He role-played his situation, you call him names, humiliate his character, and then never invite him again.

It's your game, but i hope he found a new group of gamers that accepted him and dont talk about him behind his back on the internet.

-Well, you are the DM. I don't neccesarily think he should have been killed, and then not invited to play anymore, but obviously, this is the past and all. Players who are obnoxous, rude and generally a bad influence at the table should be talked to before/after the game. Explain the problem, and solutions. Killing characters (especially by the DM) is not something I condone. And, not inviting the player back is particularly distasteful. You might not have really liked him, but what if he genuinely liked you, and liked to play D&D?

-In my own experience, I once played an Elf- a Sun Elf specifically. Phaeren Sunbreeze, a Wizard. If you are not familiar with Sun Elves, they are all haughty, elitist snobs, who look down upon anything else that is not a Sun Elf. After being thrown in together with the party, I role-played this way, and obviously did not make many friends within the party. I enjoyed playing Phaeren. But the rest of the players (who were close friends and family) did not. Unbeknownst to me, they complained to the DM, and were planning to kill Phaeren in his reverie. While cleaning up (since we played at my house, and my Stepfather was the DM), he told me about the tension my character and Role-playing style was causing. I toned things back a bit, and the party got along better. Eventually, Phaeren died anyway, but it wasn't by the DM, nor was it by my own party members.

Well, lemme clear things up. I don't need YOU to judge me alright? You DON't have the right. If you knew the situation with him you'd do the same thing if not worse. He may have liked playing RPG's but he was less than respectful towards me and other players and have demostrated this in numerous situations in the past.

Let me break down to you -
This player constantly berated other players for not following his plans, hardly chipped in for $$ for food during the monthly games, whined about not having the good die rolls and was generally a dick towards female players. I let him play because one of my friends convinced me he wasn't going to be an ass. I believed him because the fellow in question was 30, not 13.

Next time, ask before you start to talk about something or someone you know nothing about.

-I still feel that you should have talked to him about it before killing his character off. If you said something to him before or after a game, perhaps he would have changed. Of course, maybe he wouldn't have, and would have left the group anyway. But, either way, you should let people know when there are problems before arbitrarily killing their characters.

So sue me. the fact of the matter is he's done several nasty things before and was doing more during that session. i do not tolerate players who willingly sabotage the hardwork of other players in my games. i didnt want him to come and he knew this but I let our mutual friend convince me otherwise.

-I don't want to sue you. There are enough frivilous lawsuits out there. But, as I said in my initial post, I was once in the other players shoes. I wasn't malicious and rude to other people playing, but my character often did undermine the other players, and contradict them. Like I said before, what's done is done. Perhaps you could came to a better solution. Maybe you couldn't have. Like you said before, I wasn't there, so I don't know. But, if something like that every happens in the future, I recommend you handle it differently. If this person joins another group, he can gripe about how unfairly you killed his character off. In short, it doesn't make you look good.

Why such an aggressive tone? Is that really needed? From your first post I certainly agreed with Humanculus. It only seemed like an attack toward another player.
When you started this thread is it not common sense that other people can respond to it? Humanculus had a reply you did not like. As I see it, you do not have to give away such a hard words just because of that. And if he made the wrong conclusions, it must not have been only his own fault. You might have been a little vague too in explaing exactly how truly awful this guy was to play with.

Still, I would never kill off a player like this, never ever. Better to tell him why he not will be invited again. Then he has a better chance to repair his mistakes next time he meet new people. Or at least just stop invite the person in question, so you don't "have" to kill him.
I would definitely not give him names on the internet. But that is how I am. Guess it is all about individuality.

When I think of it, I am not sure why you started this thread at all?

Please, don't get angry with me too. I just happen to have another point of view than you do. I hope you enjoy your current roleplaying group instead. Focus on that. Focus on positive things makes life more fun :)

Actually I do enjoy this group. We've been gaming since 89 and run the gamut from Cyberpunk 2020, D&D2e, Mayfair Games' DC Superheroes and TSR Marvel Superheroes even West End (RIP) Games' TORG. But we always come back to good old faithful D&D.

I am so loving the new setting since I am wholly keen on pulp adventures
