I basically had my players take a vote as for which Campaign Setting they wanted the next campaign to take place in, and Forgotten Realms won by a substantial amount. I have a month where we can't D&D (sadness) so I have quite a bit of prep time, in which I'll likely be able to purchase two or three FR books.

I already own Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Player's Guide to Faerun.

What else would you suggest to expand my knowledge of the realms and run a good game for a so far unspecified group build?

If you are interested in religion in the realms I highly recommend the old 2nd edition books 'Faiths & Avatars', 'Demihuman Deities', and 'Powers and Pantheons'. Faith&Avatars contains the minor and major Faerūnian deities, Demihuman Deities the pantheons of the Drow, Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, and Halflings. Powers and Pantheons contains Demipowers, and the pantheons of Chult, Mulhorand, and Unther.

I know there is also the new 3rd edition 'Faith and Pantheons', but if you prefer fluff to crunsh & stats (I at least will never have use for the stats of the gods themselves), then this book does not compare against the older 2nd edition books. The avatar stats in the older books are obsolete as are the specialized priests, and the spells at least need some little work to use, but they contain much more information on the churches themselves.

Also I highly recommend the old 2nd edition 'Volo's Guides', if you can get you hands on those. I love them! They contain a lot of lore and detail information about the lands.

Gernerally I recommend to start buying a book for the region you plan to play in (or where you start play). So if you plan to start somewhere in the Savage Frontier, recommendable books are "Silver Marches", "Volo's Guide to the North" (2nd Edition), "City of Splendors - Waterdeep". If you want to play in the regions of Aglarond, Thay, or Rashemen, have a look at the "Unapproachable East" book, etc.

"Lords of Darkness" is a very interesting book about evil organizations of the realms. "Lost Empires" contains a lot of intersting lore about the past as do the 2nd edition "Arcane Age" books. There are a lot of interesting and good FR books. You can't buy them all at once, so you must just look yourself where to start and what priorities you set.

but your first stop should be www.candlekeep.com

Unapproachable East is, imho, hands down one of the best books wotc has ever made. So if you're ven remotely considering any plot of setting there, thumbs up.

Aparently, one of my Players wants to be a Shadow Thief of Amn. Since I have no other plans, I figure they'll start in the area of Amn.

Could anybody point me to which book info on Amn would be in? 3.x please, as much as I like reading, between school and work I have little time to read much above what i need.

Edit: Heh, I'm an ass. Thank you all for your help, it's much appreciated.

Well... if you want to know more about Amn you should get the "Lands of Intrigue" boxed set for 2nd edition.

And for your own reading-pleasure/info-gathering "Cloak&Dagger".

3.x doesn't have many details on Amn afaic

3.x is all my hobby shop has, and they appear to be low on that right now. Still, I bought some of the cheaper books:

Unapproachable East
Shining South
Underdark

Unapproachable East was the ONLY book suggested that they had, but hopefully the others will help me as well.

Forgoten Realms Campaign Setting, Players Guide to Faerun, Races of Faerun, Magic of Faerun.

Those are core, IMO.

I also recommend Champions of Valor.

I own the first two. I can't find Races of Faerun where I live, and having my credit card number stolen (many times) I don't do the online thing anymore.

I'll give Magic of Faerun and Champions of Valor a look over next time I get a chance. Thanks for the ideas.

Forgot to mention. Maybe you already know, but you can download some old 2nd edition stuff for free at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads .
The crunshy content is of course obsolete for 3rd edition but they contain tons of interesting fluff. Good stuff. Have fun!

EDIT: Mace Hammerhand's mentioned Lands of Intrigue is there too.

I agree with some of the previous posters. I like Faiths and Pantheons and would recommned Races of Faerun. Next I would go with Magic of Faerun and Lords of Darkness. Also, look to the region you're playing. They made a great Silver Marches supplement.
