I'm new to the realms, just got a copy of the main rulebook the other day. I have been playing Dnd for quite sometime now, but never in Forgotten Realms. I have a couple of the books, the main book, serpent kingdoms and lords of darkness. I'm just wondering where most people think is the best place to start a game set in the Forgotten Realms. Also any advice for a DM new to the realms would be nice. Thanks

-First thing you gotta decide is if you want to play 4.0 Edition. If you do, you might as well wait until 4e Forgotten Realms is released, since many aspects of the setting are going to be changed and/or radicall different.

-That out of the way, the best place to start your campaign is dependent on a few factors:

What area are you most familiar/comfortable with?

What type of campaign do you forsee yourself running? (High Magic, Low Magic, Dwarven, Underdark, Etc.)

Who/what are the player characters involved in the campaign?

For starters, I doubt my gaming group is going to be around when 4e FR comes out, so I think I'm going to go ahead and do it.

As for your other questions-

- I don't know the world that great yet, I have read some of it and know I need to keep reading it, but as for the time being, I think I like ice wind dale, silverymoon or waterdeep as just locations if that’s what you meant.

- As for your second question, I think it will be moderate magic, surface setting, and various races, probably humans for the majority.

- And your last question, I don't know what they are going to be. I'm probably not allowing any of the complete classes or psionics in it, so none of those. We don't have many players, so it will be a small party.

The Silver Marches are just about the easiest place to drop in a new group to Forgotten Realms IMHO. It's basically your traditional Fantasy setting, from which you can start building up lore.

I suggest getting the setting book Silver Marches if you plan on running a game there, everything you need is self-contained.

-Alright, all three of those places are good places to start. You know why? There's plenty of information about all three of them. That means you'll be able to utilize more NPCs, more plothooks, and so on.

- As for your second question, I think it will be moderate magic, surface setting, and various races, probably humans for the majority.

-Waterdeep, Silverymoon and Icewind Dale all fit in with that, so, so far, so good.

-Alright, no fear. Silverymoon and Waterdeep are large, large cities. Dwarves live with Elves, who live with Humans, who live with Gnomes, and so on. Presuming they choose any of the Core Races, they aren't going to be out of place. Icewind Dale, a little less so, but it's still filled with a good deal of variety. Same thing goes with the Core Classes. All can easily be explained being in the city.
