I wish to DM the City of the Spider Queen campaign because I heard it was amazing, but I have a few questions.

1. I'm a decent DM for regular ol Meat and potatos DND. I know a lot of the rules and can function just fine during a session. My question is, if I just simply purchased the book for CotSQ could I simply just open it up and play? Or do I have to buy, PH, DMG, MM, etc... for Forgotten Realms?

2. CAN I simply buy a book for CotSQ and/or what else do I need?

3.How much different is FR from DnD?

Thanks!

the Campaign Setting book is helpful but I believe the monster stats from the Compendium are given in an appendix.

Edit: If you'd like to familiarize yourself with the area Volo's Guide to the Dalelands (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/2/fr_downloads/tsr9524.zip) can be downloaded for free.

Welcome to the Forgotten Realms. :D

The adventure can be run just fine with the Players Handbook, the Dungeon Masters Guide, the Monsters Manual, and the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. If you have the Fiend Folio, Manual of the Planes, and the Faerun Monsters Compendium, they're spiffy and add to the game, but are not required. I would point out that the Adventure was written in 3rd edition, for 4 players under the 25 point buy, at 10th level with 10th level magic items and gold.

Welcome to the FR boards
Forgotten Realms main difference from DnD is the magic system called the weave, basically it is a network of magic that a spellcaster taps into to cast a spell, this network is maintained by a greater diety named mystra. It really isn’t that different though, and because SotSQ doesn’t deal with much weave activity, you’re good there. HOWEVER , SotQ is based of a subterrean race of dark elves named Drow, they worship the Spider Queen named Lloth (or Lolth to common tongue), if Lloth is already in your game, (she’s in a lot of non-FR worlds as well, standard DnD cosmology) then it will be fine, but you might want to burrow someones Monsters of Faerun, because I think it references some monsters in there, you should also reference some Drow lore, books by RA Salvatore are great. So it should go in pretty well into any game, the guide to the campaign is great, just for ideas if you’re not using FR. So I’d pick up FRCS (forgotten realms campaign setting)
