Newbie question about year [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-03-07, 05:18 PM In the 3.0 FR campaign setting there is a sidebar called "advancing the years" (page 260) it says that for every five real life months the forgotten realms campaign setting will advance two months.
If this is true then it is 1374 DR "Year of Lightning Storms"? I'm rather confused on this issue and I also don't know if WotC actually did this or if they forgot. Would someone please help me out?

P.S. I am pretty new to FR, I haven't read any novels but I do own Forgotten Realms campaign setting, Races of Faerun, Silver Marches and Magic of Faerun (I wasn't very impressed by this one and plan to sell it)

The timeline thing you mention is just a rule of thumb, and hasn't been kept to all that well. Its been more like a 1-in-3 ratio.

07-03-07, 07:49 PM Yes things have been a bet confusing. The War of the Spider Queen finished in 2005, but the whole thing took place in 1372.
We can't expect the authors do get long series like that done in only two years. Even if different authors are all doing the different books in the series.

If you want to do some catching up, buy Grand History of the Forgotten Realms when it comes out in September. Even if you don't want to catch up, buy it anyway, it will be extremely useful in other situations. If the sales for the book are good, it sends a message to WotC that we would rather have fluff filled lorebooks than crappy super-adventures disguised as sourcebooks.

07-03-07, 09:41 PM Thanks for the help. I'm about to start DMing (1 week from now) an FR campaign and I'd like to know if I'll run into road blocks if I have mine set in 1372 (since I've read none of the novels)?

07-03-07, 10:29 PM Grand History will indeed help you in that regard. Unfortunately, it won't be released in time to be useful for your campaign.

As such, I would suggest obtaining a copy of the Player's Guide to Faerūn and perusing the "Campaign Journal" section for notes on events in the Realms for the time period your campaign will be set in.

07-04-07, 01:40 AM The setting is currently in the first months of 1375, as that is when the most recent novels take place. Dont worry too much about remaining completely canon, there are so many novels its hard to keep up.

They are going to have to figure out what happened to all the Cormanthor Drow living in Myth Drannor between now and then. :rolleyes:
