| Belissaire07-16-05, 09:57 AM | Since WOTC is putting out about two "regional" sourcebooks a year, what do you think will be the next sourcebooks to come out. In 2005, it was Waterdeep and the Shining South. What you be on your "want" list and what you be on "this is what is probably coming out considering past books" list. It seems the WOTC has a pattern of putting out one book of more usual places of the Realms (Silvermarches and Waterdeep) and one on the farther regions of Faerun (SS and UE). So I guess, there will be a Old Empire or Calimshan book and a Dale/Moonsea or Sembia/Cormyr source book out next year. But I would really like an Amn update... Bel |
| Darrian07-16-05, 10:03 AM | I would like the Moonsea/Dalelands area. Go Zhents! Lands of Intrigue would be great too since I am running a campaign that is based around Tethyr. If I were a betting man, and I am, I would bet that the next region would be The Moonshae islands. Darrian |
| Bocklin07-16-05, 12:52 PM | Was Shining South in 2005? God I am really lost with time... Personally, I would hope that they publish something on the Dalelands or the Moonsea and another one on the "Cold Lands" (i.e. Damara, Impiltur, etc.) Bocklin Since WOTC is putting out about two "regional" sourcebooks a year, what do you think will be the next sourcebooks to come out. | Faraer07-16-05, 01:23 PM | Dales/Moonsea? Sembia/Cormyr? Any one of these areas could easily support ten such books, so to squish two into one book would be crazy. More Heartlands coverage still overdue. |
| Sammael_the_Chosen07-16-05, 02:48 PM | Shining South was 2004. |
| Steel Rabbit07-16-05, 03:05 PM | I wouldn't mind them detailing one of the elven lands in their next book (except Evermeet...It's pretty dull there). |
| Darrian07-16-05, 04:23 PM | You mean Evermeet? I can't think of another elven realm large enough to be detailed in a book by itself. Darrian |
| Bocklin07-16-05, 04:47 PM | This could be a "Realms of the Elves" source book. It would tie well to the Last Mythal series. Evereska would be included, but you would also have bits on Evermeet, the Wealdath and also the new realm of Myth Drannor (whatever it turns out to be). It would be a neat idea... | Belissaire07-16-05, 05:27 PM | A trading powers source book would cool with Amn, Sembia, Calimshan... Bel. |
| Bocklin07-16-05, 06:31 PM | Plus maybe the Princes realm where the Tree of Souls is planted.... It's only been ignore for, what?, 6 years now? I am afraid that I do not know the Prince realm. Where is that? :) Bocklin |
| Alac Luin07-16-05, 06:58 PM | I am afraid that I do not know the Prince realm. Where is that? :) Bocklin Thats the thing, we don't know!!!! :) It's from the Evermeet novel. The prince of Evermeet left with the mentioned tree. he said something like it was going to be placed somewhere in an island of ice, or something like that. I assume it will be north of the tortured lands |
| BrianCritchley07-16-05, 07:59 PM | I think Cormyr needs a new book, at the very least they need to update the info there as a LOT has changed since the lkast cormyr book. still my money says they'll do some place thats less well known, they seem to wanna put most of their focus on stuff with little info for it |
| Dargoth07-16-05, 08:47 PM | Shining South came out last year Where only getting one regional source book this year: City of Splendors |
| Steel Rabbit07-16-05, 11:34 PM | I did mean Evermeet. The minute I closed the browser I thought to myself that I hoped I typed in the right word...I didn't... |
| ydirbut07-16-05, 11:58 PM | I want an orc sourcebook. |
| Koofoo9507-17-05, 12:32 AM | I think something on the really obscure lands would be nice like the jungles of Chult. Or something on the Endless wastes(though there probally isn't much to tell there). |
| Darrian07-17-05, 12:39 AM | An orc book? Serious? You are NEVER gonna get an orc book. WotC does not have enough love for the greenskins. You would be better off making up your own stuff or even adapting some GW stuff. Now they do greenskins right. (but not much else). Darrian (Wasted alot of money and time on GW products). |
| Sammael_the_Chosen07-17-05, 03:48 AM | D&D orcs aren't green. |
| Mr. FIXIT07-17-05, 04:20 AM | Moonshaes, or the Cold Lands. Though, a regional sourcebook on the Dalelands would also be very much appreciated. |
| Darrian07-17-05, 10:30 AM | Hey thanks for the heads-up. You know, I never realized I was colorblind before but, if you say so. BTW, what is the color of the orc in the picture (Monster Manual pg 203)? I thought it was green Where do half-orc's get the green undertone that RoF mentions in their description (pg 67)? Envious human parents? Why do you suppose Tanarukk's skin " varies from gray-green to dun brown" (pg 123 RoF)? Do you suppose it was the demonic lineage? And most importantly, if you look at the picture (DMG2 pg 188), what do you suppose Gronka and Krusk serve at their bars that makes them look so freakin green? I don't think I would drink there unless I were already green. Darrian (must be colorblind) |
| Cli' San Aquanova07-17-05, 11:58 AM | Assuming Fallen Empires of Faerun details just that [fallen empires], I would enjoy one civilizations with a rich ancient history, mainly Chessenta, Mulhorand, Unther, etc. I also would like to see a book that goes into great detail on Sembia, with Cormyr as a nice addition. But all of that pales to what I really want: a sourcebook on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Detailing the areas of it, the various cultures (Merfolk, Shalarin, Sahuagin, Aquatic Elves, maybe Water Genasi?), faiths (undersea temples of Umberlee, Deep Sashelas, Sekolah, and Istishia), BBEGs (from pirates to priests), and all of the goodies that come with. *Sigh* I doubt WotC will ever do that though. -C'SA :u:Bring Back Merfolk!!!:u: |
| Sammael_the_Chosen07-17-05, 12:42 PM | Hey thanks for the heads-up. You know, I never realized I was colorblind before but, if you say so. It could be me as well. BTW, what is the color of the orc in the picture (Monster Manual pg 203)? I thought it was green It's gray, just as it says in the description. "This creature looks like a human with gray skin and coarse hair." Where do half-orc's get the green undertone that RoF mentions in their description (pg 67)? Envious human parents? Considering how much skin color variation there is when we take normal genetics into account, I wouldn't be surprised if they get the green hue from the mixing of human and orc genes. Why do you suppose Tanarukk's skin " varies from gray-green to dun brown" (pg 123 RoF)? Do you suppose it was the demonic lineage? Why not? And most importantly, if you look at the picture (DMG2 pg 188), what do you suppose Gronka and Krusk serve at their bars that makes them look so freakin green? I don't think I would drink there unless I were already green. PHB specifically mentions "grayish pigmentation." PHB Krusk images (pages 25 and 68) do not display even a hint of green color. So, all I can say is that we can amount the DMG2 green Krusk (presuming it's green, I don't have the book yet) to artist interpretation. The description and PHB images do not portray him as green. Sammael (may be colorblind) :D P.S. I blame the "green orc" theme on Warcraft, not GW products. |
| Belissaire07-17-05, 01:08 PM | Here's WOTC release pattern since 2002: Silver Marches (2002) Unapproachable East (2003) Underdark (2003) Serpent Kingdoms (2004) Shining South (2004) City of Splendors: Waterdeep (2005) Lost Empires of Faerűn (2005) (Although not a regional source book per se) In 2006?? Cold Lands??? Moonsea/Dales??? Old Empires??? Bel |
| Demetrios07-17-05, 01:33 PM | But all of that pales to what I really want: a sourcebook on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Sea of Fallen Stars by Steven Schend was one of the last of the 2e FR sourcebooks. There's a heck of a lot of information in there that can be brought over to the current edition with little or no needed conversion, including an incredible amount of underwater Realmslore "fluff". Since it was one of the last areas to be detailed in a 2e product, I don't think they are likely to do a 3e version of it any time soon, however - it has to join near the back of the line behind a whole lot of places which haven't been visited in a longer time... If you are unable to find a hard copy, a quick internet search will lead you to places where it can be downloaded from WotC-approved retailers... |
| kliate07-17-05, 01:36 PM | I'd REALLY like to see a book on the Dalelands. Granted that Volo's guide to the Dalelands can be picked up from the WoTC download section (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/2/fr_downloads/tsr9524.zip), it feels somewhat out of date - both in and out of the FR timeline. |
| BrianCritchley07-17-05, 06:38 PM | given that there is a STRONG possiability of a new elven realm of Cormyanthar coming up it's likely we'll see a dales/cormanthyr sourcebook |
| Darrian07-17-05, 06:52 PM | Say Brian, Have you read any good books lately? Darrian (Recently finished Farthest Reach, now patiently awaiting Last Portal) |
| Alac Luin07-17-05, 07:16 PM | Darrian and Sammael_the_Chosen I'm not taking sides in this discussion, but I'm looking back on older products, namely the 2ed Monster Manual (TSR2140). In general, they resemble primitive humans with gray-green skin covered with coarse hair. So, your both right. |
| Darrian07-17-05, 07:34 PM | No problem Alac, I know that Sammael is right that orcs in FR are usually more gray than green. I took exception when he stated that "D&D orcs are not green." It was the absolute, had he said that orcs are usually gray and not green, I would not have overreacted so. My bad, Darrian |
| Zevox07-17-05, 07:53 PM | I'd personally enjoy a Cormyr sourcebook which gave details on the current state of that nation (the fact that the best source of info for this currently is the novel Elminster's Daughter is a bit annoying, since that only covers so much...) as well as information about its recent history (war with the Dragon's armies, Azoun IV's battle with the Dragon and death, immediate pre-and post-war situations, ect.) and a bit of its ancient history (brief summary of its national timeline from founding to the rule of Azoun IV, maybe with more detailed descriptions of a few key events in its history). Although the idea of a Dalelands or Undersea Kingdoms sourcebook for 3.5 does sound appealing as well... Zevox |
| Zigra07-18-05, 12:23 AM | I'd love a sourcebook detailing the Jungles of Chult. However, I'm afraid that Serpent Kingdoms is the closest we'll get to that for a long time. |
| Link18207-18-05, 12:53 AM | Bloodstone Lands definetly. Perhaps they could do island nations such as the Moonshaes, Luskan, whatever as long as they include Nimbral! |
| Willowhaunt07-18-05, 11:21 PM | I'm surprised that a 3e sourcebook on the Dales doesn't exist yet. Ditto for Cormyr, as both are ridiculously high-profile places in the FR...I'd be cheering for one of those or a Sword Coast book, though I wonder if WotC is avoiding it after the BG games explored it in such detail. I would love it if the elves got a FR book of their own, though I doubt it will happen. |
| Oulak07-19-05, 12:54 AM | I really want to see a Moonshae Islands book, and even though I'll get kicked for saying it, Kara-Tur. |
| Old Sage07-19-05, 01:31 AM | I'd love a sourcebook detailing the Jungles of Chult. However, I'm afraid that Serpent Kingdoms is the closest we'll get to that for a long time. You are aware of the 1e Jungles of Chult adventure/acessory, yes? Cormyr is always going to be high on the listing of possibilities. But my personal choice is for the Border Kingdoms area, one of my favorite parts of the Realms. Ed's Polyhedron articles were certainly a great, but now I think we are sorely in need of an updated tome dedicated to the region. |
| Link18207-19-05, 01:55 AM | Kicked? They NEED to do a Kara-Tur book! |
| Willowhaunt07-19-05, 02:32 AM | Do they even acknowledge that Kara-Tur exists in the Realms anymore? I'm sure that they probably do, but it seems like some high-up is pretending that it isn't there and hoping it will go away, as it has gotten zero coverage. Then again, the same can be said of Maztica and Zakhara. I've got a feeling everything that isn't on or near mainland Faerun will fade into obscurity until the clueless new generation of D&Ders don't even know they existed at all, and mock the old-schoolers and their worn-looking books about long-forgotten sections of the FR from long forgotten editions of D&D. Or something. Then again, I'm not sure the core Realms authors would shed very many tears, as Greenwood himself said he wasn't very pleased with the existence of any real-world parallel societies in *his* campaign setting. However, his home verson of the FR hasn't even gone through the Time of Troubles yet, so take his word as you will. |

Well those places are shown on the 3e FRCS map and there has been references to them in some 3e and 3.5e sourcebooks. Kara-tur has been mentioned in Unapproachable East. Races of Faerun mentions them as well. The Player's Guide discusses their planes. |
| Bocklin07-19-05, 03:30 AM | And Paizo said that they would probably try to tackle those regions in Dragon (on the basis of one issue focused on one of these regions). It is not a source book, but it is probably enough considering the actual market for these regions. Bocklin Well those places are shown on the 3e FRCS map and there has been references to them in some 3e and 3.5e sourcebooks. Kara-tur has been mentioned in Unapproachable East. | Link18207-19-05, 04:07 AM | An annual update in Dragon would definetly work for Zakhara and Maztica (Maz-tica. Mar-tika? Toy Soldiers? Ew! Curse you Eminem for sampling that horrid, horrid song. Step by step, your career needs to fall down.) Anyway. I think a Kara-Tur/Hordeland book would sell. If not that, then it could easily get monthly or bi-monthly coverage in Dragon. I'd love to revist Oriental Adventures and Kara-Tur, but then again, maybe all this Kara-Tur love is only coming from the veteran role players with fond childhood memories of Sho Kasugi, samuri swords, and hollywood ninjas on motorcycles. |
| babysamurai07-19-05, 05:49 AM | Well, obviously they need to do better coverage (not just a few shoddy magazine articles to placate us) of Kara-Tur, Al-Qadim (one of the best campaign settings ever IMO), The Horde, and Maztica. As for Faerun; I definitely agree about the Moonshaes, though I don't know how they would top the wonderfully written 1st edtion accessory-The Moonshaes. The Bloodstone Lands (more juice on the Yellow Rose Monastery, the Witch-King, and the Grandfather of Assassins). Chessenta, Vilhon Reach (some Greco-Roman action). Please no more boring Dale-lands (Ed's personal playground-no thanks). The Savage North (Way north of Waterdeep...or did they cover that in Siver Marches). |
| Brom Greenstar07-19-05, 08:01 AM | I'd love to see a book on Sunset Vale and its surroundings, Reaching Woods, Iriaebor, Elturel, the Fields of the Dead... |
| Belissaire07-19-05, 12:08 PM | Is there any book on the Lake of Steam? Could be a possibilty... Bel. |
| Demetrios07-19-05, 02:10 PM | Is there any book on the Lake of Steam? Could be a possibilty... Bel. The northern Lake of Steam cities were detailed in Empires of the Shining Sea. But then again, with the Watercourse Trilogy novels beginning later this year, WotC might think revisiting that area might be a good idea... |
| Darrian07-19-05, 02:15 PM | Watercourse trilogy? What is this Watercourse trilogy you speak of? Darrian (avid reader) |
| Sullivan07-19-05, 03:34 PM | What would I love to see: Zakhara/Mazteca/Kara-Tur Book Mulhorand Book Island Kingdoms of the Sea of Swords (Lantan, Moonshae's, etc.) book What will we probably see: Cormyr/Sembia/Dalelands Books Some thematic book, linked together not by location, but subject matter, like Serpent Kingdoms. |
| Bocklin07-19-05, 04:35 PM | Hi Darrian, Check that out: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/frnovel/950227400 ;) Bocklin Watercourse trilogy? What is this Watercourse trilogy you speak of? Darrian (avid reader) |
| Darrian07-19-05, 04:49 PM | Thanks Bocklin, I will pick up a copy when it hits shelves in November. Darrian |
| Link18207-19-05, 08:13 PM | Please no Dalelands. I think the Island Kingdoms of the Sword Coast thing would rock, but they should include the islands in the Moonsea or go whole hog and detail not only the island kingdoms all over Faerun but also the Undersea kingdoms as well. There are tons of ocean based races and monsters (Sea Elf kingdoms, Kraken territories, Kuo-tua lands, etc.) I'd like a few details on them too. |
| Razz07-19-05, 10:31 PM | I personally would like updates and coverage on Kara-Tur/Maztica/Zhakara/Hordelands due to one good reason: It's a fantasy campaign WORLD. The name of the planet is called Abeir-Toril. I would like to have 3.5 updated access to other parts of my campaign world, whether or not I plan on using them. Whether or not certain DMs of Forgotten Realms will use such realms means nothing. The game is about the players and one day a player would like to explore those faraway regions (exploring new lands is awesome in such a fantasy game) or would like to have a character from such regions with a full story background (instead of relying on old, vague 2E products), etc. etc. You can't have every player with a ninja or Aztec-like character come from some other world over and over again do you? I think Toril has enough immigrants. |
| GothicDan07-19-05, 11:47 PM | Heh. I like theme. I wish TSR hadn't jammed together all of those other Earth-inspired settings into Abeir-Toril. While I appreciate a certain level of variety, I would have rather had that variety separate from FR. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 12:21 AM | Yeah because of the all inclusive decision to include so much on Abeir-Toril and man do we have a crowded pantheon(s). Any idea just how many gods have worshippers on Abeir-Toril? It must be in the well over 200. I wonder if the Time of Troubles affected the Maztican pantheon or the Kara-Tur pantheon? Darrian (There are WAY too many Gods) |
| Kuje3107-20-05, 01:11 AM | Yeah because of the all inclusive decision to include so much on Abeir-Toril and man do we have a crowded pantheon(s). Darrian (There are WAY too many Gods) Yes, the ToT's did happen in those pantheons as well And no, there isn't to many deities. Earth has more then Faerun ever has had. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 07:31 AM | Hold on now. I understand your kneejerk reaction to defend everything Forgotten Realms, but if you are saying that Earth, and I am assuming you must mean current day earth, has more religions you might want to think that through. In modern Earth the VAST majority of people with faith believe in monotheism, that being said, if you take all those believers and add them together you get less than 10 (Christ, Yahweh, Buddah, Allah, the god that Sihks worship (sorry for my ignorance) and maybe Earth Mother). I think that is less than the pantheon of Unther. Don't worry my man, a little criticism of Disneyland err, I mean Forgotten Realms, is not gonna hurt it. It's still the happiest place on earth or Abeir-Toril. Darrian (Yes there are way too many gods) |
| Brom Greenstar07-20-05, 09:05 AM | Maybe you are forgetting some cultures Darrian. Present day Earth as you say, has so many religions, cults and sects that they are a whole field of study. Many people that believe in the same god (christians for example) hold such variety of rites that hardly can be considered of the same religion. Specially if you think that most of them hold a Saint in such regard that could be considered worship. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 09:39 AM | Also, note that it wouldn't be appropriate to compare modern day Earth to Faerun. I like to think that Faerun is similar, religiously, to ancient Greece... Which had thousands of deities and demigods, etc. It's not the number of deities in FR that annoys me - I love a lot of gods. It's the fact that I like things to be specific and immediately recognizable, thematically. When I think of FR I want Faerun, which was what FR originally was; I don't want Japan (Kara-Tur), which you could basically take off of Abeir-Toril and plunk down anywhere else and it wouldn't make a difference. It was only put onto Abeir-Toril because FR was a big seller. |
| Bocklin07-20-05, 09:48 AM | In modern Earth the VAST majority of people with faith believe in monotheism, that being said, if you take all those believers and add them together you get less than 10 (Christ, Yahweh, Buddah, Allah, the god that Sihks worship (sorry for my ignorance) and maybe Earth Mother). I think that is less than the pantheon of Unther. Not that this debate is immensely relevant, but I will chime in all the same. ;) Add hinduism and you have a whole bunch of extra deities (Vishnu, Krishna, etc. - do not know them all). On top of that you can indeed add series of sects who have their own deity-like entities (scientology, raelism, etc.). Then you need to ask yourself how you deal with animism (the worship of nature and/or ancestor spirits) which is still very widespread within Africa (but more often than not mixed together with other faiths). I guess there would be a case to say that each of the groups have a pantheon of their own, made up of their own spirit-deities. Let's not forget Zarathustrians; and I seem to remember that the President of Turkmenistan (or was it Uzbekistan?) declared himself to be of godly nature a couple of years ago... :) Bocklin |
| TomCosta07-20-05, 11:09 AM | First choice the desperately overlooked Heartland region of the Dragon Coast (along with a new look at Prespur and the various Pirate Isles, in need of updating). A book on the Moonshaes and the isles of the Northmen, done right with some usage of the 2E Vikings and Celt books. Unther, Mulhorand, Murghom, and Raurin are in desperate need of updating. Sespech, Chondath, Chondalwood, the Blade Kingdoms, and Chessenta could use some updating and serious fleshing out especially after several of the novels set in the Chessenta region have seemingly ignored FR10 wholesale (although Maiden of Pain did an excellent job I felt). Cormyr is in desperate need of an update, but most of the information is out there. Same could be said about Sembia. Same for the Moonsea (especially with the Zhentarim's expansion) The W. Heartlands could use some work -- aside from Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast and the 2 El Ecologies Appendices, there's very little comprehensive lore. Then there's all the other little places that haven't gotten their due but aren't a full book on their own... the islands of Nimbral, Lantan, Tharsult for example. Though I suppose you could do a book on Magical Island Kingdoms and do it on Evermeet (and all its little satellite islands), Nimbral, Lantan, and all the other non-Ffolk and non-Northmen islands, maybe including Tharsult, Mintar, Orlumbor, and others. |

It's still the happiest place on earth or Abeir-Toril. Darrian (Yes there are way too many gods) No, there isn't to many gods. And please step outside your box. If you didn't know, paganism is the fastest growing religion in modern day in the USA and Austrulia (sp?), and many other countries. So there are hundreds of deities on earth. Hells, I have in a book about ancient deities and it's about 600 pages and this is the tip of the iceberg in deities found here on Earth that are STILL worshipped. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 12:22 PM | And with Kuje's knowledge (about 600+ pages of deities still worshipped on Earth today), think backwards from that to a time period more appropriate to that of FR (such as the early Roman Empire's days, and the Greeks as I mentioned), and you can see easily thousands of deities possible. Just look at all of the pantheons that were worshipped in Europe at one time period in the early ADs and BCs. |
| Milo_Shishkabibble07-20-05, 12:23 PM | How about a general "Foreign Realms", which can handle the places like Zakhara, Maztica, Kara-Tur, the Utter East, and the Hordelands? While personally, I'd like to see one unique to each of them, and they have enough to fill at least one book each, I doubt the sales would justify the expense, in WOTC's eyes. Personally, I'd love to run a campaign set completely in one of the other realms, but there's just not enough material there to pull it off. Another realm I'd like to see would be Anauroch, given the number of Netherese ruins under it, and the Shades new claiming of it, but they probably figure that Sandstorm did a good enough job to completely miss the fluff-y reasons for doing a book in Anauroch. |

Just look at all of the pantheons that were worshipped in Europe at one time period in the early ADs and BCs. The greek and roman deities are in that book I mentioned, as are most of the old europe faiths, and american, and india, and sumerian/babylion, and egyptian, and. Well you get the point. |
| Chloramantis07-20-05, 12:28 PM | Old Empires, yes! Although Cormanthyr or the Cold Lands would also be cool. I'm sure in time they will all be out so just wait. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 12:32 PM | Ahh, okay Kuje. :) How about a general "Foreign Realms", which can handle the places like Zakhara, Maztica, Kara-Tur, the Utter East, and the Hordelands? While personally, I'd like to see one unique to each of them, and they have enough to fill at least one book each, I doubt the sales would justify the expense, in WOTC's eyes. Personally, I'd love to run a campaign set completely in one of the other realms, but there's just not enough material there to pull it off. I wouldn't mind seeing these places revived... Just not in FR. Each could have their own generic-world sourcebook, though, that you could plunk down somewhere (such as what WotC did with Sandstorm and Frost Burn). I'd most like to see the Moonshaes updated, I think, as well as the Heartlands. The Shining South and the Unapproachable East are two of my favorite regions, and they've already been done. The former was a good book, and the latter was 75% a waste of my time and money, sadly. |
| Chloramantis07-20-05, 12:36 PM | How about the Lake of Steam region? |
| Darrian07-20-05, 02:03 PM | You have a book that is over 600 pages filled with all diferent religions that are worshipped TODAY? Does this book have a title? Anyway I have these 5 books Maybe you have heard of them, Monster Manual, Monster Manual 2, Monster Manaul 3 and Monsters of Faerun. Now all of these books list races of intelligent beings that inhabit Abeir-Toril and I would be willing to bet all of the intelligent ones worship a deity. So, I am just guessing but I bet there are more than 600 races that fit my criteria in those books, and each of those races worships a pantheon of their own gods. Lot's of gods. How bout that Illithid god of romace? He/she is hot! Now back to your post, you stated "Earth has more deities than Faerun ever had." Your quote does not specify a time period, so I have to believe you mean present day. Also, if you are counting ancient history, I think it would only be fair to count Abeir-Torils ancient History too. But all of this stuff is really not important, my original point is that that are too amny gods in Faerun and I stand by that. Darrian (How bout the Bugbear god of picnic basket stealing?) |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 02:10 PM | Darrian, are you truly so ignorant to think that there aren't still thousands of pagans in the world? I may not be pagan myself, and may not respect all of the aspects of the various religions, but that does not mean that they do not exist, if not in as great a number as various monotheistic worshippers. And no, not every race has an entire pantheon, actually. For example, each of the lycanthropes only has one racial deity. The Duergar have 2, I believe, the Illithids have 2, the Beholders have 2 or possibly 3, etc. The reason is that not every species' culture is such that it would promote the worship of gods of specific portfolios. For instance, the Illithids probably don't even understand the concept of love/romance, so they wouldn't have a deity of it. You have to take into account the varying psychologies/psyches of the various species. They're not just humans in funny suits. And, as Kuje has pointed out, Earth currently has as many deities as Faerun has ever had. What is your cut off line for the number of people who worship a given deity before that deity "no longer exists" on Earth? Considering we have no physical proof of ANY deity's existence, either we have to say that NONE of them exist, or that ANY exist that at least one person in the world acknowledges. And, as I reccomended before, if you're looking for a time period, just pick any one applicable to Faerun. During Rome, each and every city, and even families, had personal gods calls paters/maters (I believe that was the name they used). So a single major city in Rome could have 50-100 deities apart from the more widely-accepted Roman pantheon. And that's not including the deities of the Greeks, the Celts, the British Isles, the Scandinavians, and the Picts, who were all around during the same time and in relatively the same continent (Europe). And exactly why are there too many deities? You stand by your point, but you don't explain it at all. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 02:42 PM | Did I say there were no pagans? I said that the VAST(as in over 2 billion people!) majority of people who are of faith practice monotheism. Did I say no pagans? Back to your point of numbers, Faiths and Pantheons lists 119 deities, the monster manual has over 300 entries and I would guess that at least half of them have a pantheon (maybe one god maybe six). Do I have to go on with the other books or does the sheer weight of numbers begin to sink in? Time period, look again, Kuje did not specify past or when in the past. He merely stated Earth. So, your "back in ancient times" analogy is irrelevant. Darrian |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 02:54 PM | Did I say there were no pagans? I said that the VAST(as in over 2 billion people!) majority of people who are of faith practice monotheism. Did I say no pagans? Over 2 billion people out of, what, 6+ billion as a whole? Let's say that fully a third of them don't practice a religion, and that leaves us with 4 billion. That means that almost half of those 4 billion are not monotheists, by your own numbers. If you openly admit that there are pagans, and that that means there are many more gods worshipped in the modern world, why were you trying to draw an analogy between the number of deities worshipped by monotheists (about 10) to Faerun? Even discounting ancient times, your analogy is clearly incorrect. In D&D, all a deity needs is a few hundred worshippers to become a demigod, as well as the approval of AO. Back to your point of numbers, Faiths and Pantheons lists 119 deities, the monster manual has over 300 entries and I would guess that at least half of them have a pantheon (maybe one god maybe six). Do I have to go on with the other books or does the sheer weight of numbers begin to sink in? I still don't understand what you're getting at. What's your point? This is why we had deity books like Monster Mythology, Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities. The latter three were some of the best FR supplements ever printed, as well. I agree that there are a heck of a lot of deities. But I'm asking you why is that a bad thing? Why is it "too many" unless you feel you have to personally develop and involve every one of them? And the fact is that due to the above four books (as well as other references, such as Planescape's On Hallowed Grounds), they've already been detailed, in part, which means you don't have to do anything. And, as I said, you cannot prove the existence of any deities, even the big 10 that you said. How do we thus know that Earth has "lost" ANY of the "ancient" deities that I mentioned? As I said, either we have to surmize that Earth has NO deities (which would make this argument useless) or that it has all of the deities it has ever had throughout history, because we have no way to test when it "loses" a deity. And note that Hinduism is the world's third largest religion, with aboug 760 million followers, and it has thousands of gods, be they Vishnu, Shiva, Gandharvas, Rakshashas, Devas, Asuras, the 8 Vayu gods, Ganga, Indra, etc.. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 03:16 PM | On to the "too many gods" point. First of all, I love the Forgotten Realms. That being said. I think you have to ask why have gods in your campaign. Well other than the place where clerics get their spells from, the role of gods is a plot tool and a way to define characters and places and most importantly alignments. Plot tool. God wants party or bad guy to do something. God is at war with another god, party should get involved in some very minor way. Defining characters. Bob my fighter worships the god of war, Steve the paladin worships the god of good guys, Jane the rogue worships the goddess of stealth. Defining places. Commerceland is the trade center of my world, they worship the trade god Nafta. Darkville is the place where bad guys live, they worship Morgue. Now when you have 119 gods as listed in Faiths and Pantheons. Each deity is much less important and in most cases less relevant. As a plot tool, who cares what the clerics god wants the party to do, most other PC worship someone else and who cares if the clerics god succeeds or fails, the god success or failure has very little impact on the realms. Having 119 deities for the players to choose from means that the casual player probably does not know much about any other PC's god, nor should he care. Besides, the player does not have to mold his character to the god, he can simply choose a god that fits his character. That does not help define a character. With 119 deities in the FR and the fact that most are accepted in any city, (example there is a church of Cyric in Waterdeep). No city that I can think of is strongly, let alone exclusively, aligned to a single god. Zhentil Keep may eventually fit this mold. If one were to use gods as examples of alignment, I think they might have a bit of overload. I can see the gods that exemplify CE, Malar and Cyric come to mind. Can you name some CG ones and can you tell me how they are alike? I love the gods in Forgotten Realms I just think there are far too many of them and worse so many are redundant. Can most of your players tell you the diference between Helm, Torm and Red Knight? Helm and Torm share most of the same worshippers. I am not advocating the 3 gods of Krynn, but I think the 19 gods of Greyhawk might be better than 119. Darrian (Let's start some Deicide) |
| Kuje3107-20-05, 03:16 PM | And if you don't like all those deities, then DON'T USE THEM. But to claim that FR has to many deities, is just strange. And I'm using earth, both modern and past, because there are still hundreds of deities worshipped on Earth. The Dictionary of Ancient Deities is the name of the book and yes you can find, if you look around, all of these deities being worshiped TODAY. Yes my players can tell the difference between each deity because each deity is different from each other. And what you just said above, explains how a polythestic world works. And it's my job as DM to show my players that each deity, and thier faithful, are different. Races in FR don't just worship one deity, they worship them ALL. They send prayers to Talona to not get sick, they send prayers to Tyr for justice, they send prayers to Auril to hope she doesn't make an ice age. Etc. And Kyrnn has more then 3 deities, they have at least 20. And for the record, Greyhawk has about the same number of deities as FR. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 03:27 PM | I think you have to ask why have gods in your campaign. Well other than the place where clerics get their spells from, the role of gods is a plot tool and a way to define characters and places and most importantly alignments. To craft a more believable culture resulting from thousands of years of history, using common societal and religious trends that we've observed in real life over the millennia. That's why I have them in my campaign. I'm a world-builder type - holistic. Plot tool. God wants party or bad guy to do something. God is at war with another god, party should get involved in some very minor way. I've never considered using a God as a plot-tool, myself. They are part of the setting, not a BBEG. Defining characters. Bob my fighter worships the god of war, Steve the paladin worships the god of good guys, Jane the rogue worships the goddess of stealth. And defining NPCs and the cultures those NPCs are a part of. Less important and less relevant in what way? And the party would care, if the god refused to grant healing spells to the party's cleric to keep them alive. Having 119 deities for the players to choose from means that the casual player probably does not know much about any other PC's god, nor should he care. Besides, the player does not have to mold his character to the god, he can simply choose a god that fits his character. That does not help define a character. I don't allow casual players. I don't like "casual" anyones, really, for anything. Besides, religion and gods should only be a secondary characteristic for defining most characters; most of the time, one's personality and experiences mold what type of religion they will follow. If one were to use gods as examples of alignment, I think they might have a bit of overload. I can see the gods that exemplify CE, Malar and Cyric come to mind. Can you name some CG ones and can you tell me how they are alike? Sune and Sharess are both alike because they appreciate talents that bring pleasure, be it physical or emotional or mental, to others. I love the gods in Forgotten Realms I just think there are far too many of them and worse so many are redundant. Can most of your players tell you the diference between Helm, Torm and Red Knight? Helm and Torm share most of the same worshippers. Except for the fact that Helm can have LE worshippers, and Torm cannot, and that anyone who wishes to be guarded or protected, regardless of alignment or greater intentions, can call upon him. As to my players knowing the difference between Helm, Torm, and Red Knight? I have no clue, as I don't run the Realms. However, that's like saying that we should cut out all information that isn't common knowledge to Players. Does that mean that we should just toss aside everything not contained in the FRCS? I am not advocating the 3 gods of Krynn, but I think the 19 gods of Greyhawk might be better than 119. There are 23 gods of Krynn. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 04:51 PM | 23 is a good number. There is something almost divine about it. If I playerd basketball, my number would be 23. Just out of curiosity GothicDan, how many gods are in YOUR campaign since you do not play Forgotten Realms. Is it over 119? Oh and another thing, maybe you could explain why you do not run a Forgotten Realms campaign? Whats wrong with Forgotten Realms? Darrian (Feeling Bullish) |
| Darrian07-20-05, 05:05 PM | Kuje, I think anything I might write negative of the Forgotten Realms setting, you would find "strange." The "and if you don't like all those deities, DON'T USE THEM" line is nice. It kinda reminds me of the "If you don't like the governments decision to go to war in Iraq, you should move to Canada, hippie" line that many pro-war sympathizers use. Of course I can choose not to use them, that is not the point. It is my right to criticize what I think is wrong with a game and campaign setting that I spend my time and money on. It is called free thinking, you might wanna give it a try. My two complaints are reasoned and constructive. Maybe you think the point of these boards is exclusively to expound the greatness of the Forgotten Realms. Kuje it is great, but there is room for disagreement. At least I hope there is. Darrian |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 05:22 PM | Just out of curiosity GothicDan, how many gods are in YOUR campaign since you do not play Forgotten Realms. Is it over 119? My approach to my pantheon is completely different. Each of the four Elemental Gods has effectively a number of faces according to philosophies commonly associated with their given element, and each of these churches make up an Elemental Pillar. Each Elemental Pillar is so different from the next that they allow totally different alignments, the priests are totally different, and the domains are totally different. These are four Intermediate Gods in my game. On top of this, I have the Dark Father and the Bright Mother, of Negative and Positive Energy, which lead the Churches of Darkness and Light. These are the only two Greater Gods in my game. For a time, the world was lost to the Elemental Gods, and many, many foreign deities set up shop. The Elemental Gods were unable to fully block them or kick them all out, but they have managed to come together and put a ban on them that keeps them at effectively Demigod status or less within their Crystal Sphere. Some beings with Demigod Status are: Queen Morwel, Prince Talisid and his 5 Companions, the 7 Archon lords of Mount Celestia, Grazz't, Demogorgon, Orcus, etc. Basically, all of the Outer Planar rules are gods in my campaign setting, in addition to the 14 Elemental Pillars (as the four Elemental Gods, for all intensive purposes - alignment, domains, philosophies, etc. - are separate gods). I also have Sseth, the Maned Lord of the Wemics, the Lord of Webs of the Aranea, and the Herdleader of the Centaurs (who are paladin-y in my world). So, as a general rule of thumb, I'd estimate it at about 50 at the moment. And still going strong, as I will never detail the campaign setting enough to my liking. Mind you, I also make up core 20-level Priest classes for each and every religion, and have removed the general Cleric class entirely. Oh and another thing, maybe you could explain why you do not run a Forgotten Realms campaign? Whats wrong with Forgotten Realms? Because I've been trying to build my own world since I was 12, and failed because I've always tired myself out. But so far, the world is up and playable at about 300 typed pages (font-size ten), and a few hundreds more pages left to type, and almost every day I add another page or two in my notebook. And if I did run a game in a pre-established campaign setting, it would be either 2E Dragonlance or Planescape, since they are my favorites, THEN the Realms follows. Kuje, I think anything I might write negative of the Forgotten Realms setting, you would find "strange." Actually, I can name a lot of negative things about FR that Kuje doesn't like. The Shadow Weave, the attacks on Evereska, the Fugue Plane, The False and the Faithless, Cyric, the Time of Troubles, Midnight/Mystra, etc. I know this because we've discussed our mutual hatred of such things. The "and if you don't like all those deities, DON'T USE THEM" line is nice. It kinda reminds me of the "If you don't like the governments decision to go to war in Iraq, you should move to Canada, hippie" line that many pro-war sympathizers use. I've used that line, before. And I'm moving out of America as soon as I am done school. I recognize the fact that as long as I am lawfully a member of a government, I am under the authority of that government. That's what voluntary submission is. John Locke, the father of liberalism, agreed with this. And Darrian, you do have the right to express your opinion and critisize things. But so many forget the opposite side of that statement - that it's our right to critisize your opinions, too. I critisize opinions if they don't make much sense or don't show much research. |
| Faraer07-20-05, 05:34 PM | Most folk have no knowledge of or interaction with clergy of the gods of monsters, demihumans, distant lands, the elemental powers, or most demigods. That leaves 35 or so deities, not all of them regularly worshipped in any one place people live, with the rest used to develop the society of demihumans and monsters, foreign parts, and rare and isolated cults. There aren't, in practice, 119 gods to choose from or to know about. The Realms is made with far more detail than is strictly necessary for a utilitarian setting of D&D campaigns. It's put there to give it the verisimilitude of a real world, and as others have said, our world has untold thousands of gods, so there's no comparison from a 'realism' perspective. A smaller roster is a perfectly fine design choice, or preference in your campaign. Feeling that way doesn't mean something is wrong with the setting, though, it just means it's built differently from how you would have done it. Rather than arguing why a different design philosophy is better, because no one can prove what it's best to want and changing someone else's goals is one of the harder things it's possible to do, why not work on your cut-down pantheons and let us know about them? |
| Kuje3107-20-05, 05:46 PM | Kuje, I think anything I might write negative of the Forgotten Realms setting, you would find "strange." Darrian Yeah, you might want to take your reply to heart and use that free thinking to realize that some of us don't agree. Wow, we disagree, there's your free thinking. And you are so off base with this reply, it's not even amusing. There's tons of things from 1e to 3.5e that I disagree with. That's that free thinking thing you mentioned. And using a war in iraq to prove a game point is also way off base. If you don't like those deities, then don't use them because it's your setting but many of us don't want WOTC to change the world and remove the deities because there is nothing wrong with having that many deities. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 05:58 PM | Amen Faraer. That is a great idea. I will do that. Here they are, This is focused on human only, because other races have their own pantheon. I have chosen 18 gods, 2 for each alignment (roughly). Remember, this is a rough draft and I might add a god or two. My Pantheon: Bane Loviatar Shar Velsharoon Talos Malar Tyr Torm Mystra Ilmater Selune Lathander Tymora Waukeen Tempus Mieliki Gond Chauntea I think I really like this. BTW, versililitude? (WTF?) Thanks again Faraer, your post was constructive and balanced. Darrian (that was fun) |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 06:03 PM | At first glance.. Who replaces Sune? And you keep all of the other racial pantheons? And what about the Elemental Gods? And he said verisimilitude. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 06:07 PM | Kuje, I am the free thinker, remember I am not the one in lockstep with everything Forgotten Realms (canon?). The free thinker is usually the one who disagrees with the established norm. I was not proving a game point, I was showing the problem with YOUR point. To most of us, your point is not quite a game point. Don't worry about my not liking the number of gods in the Forgotten Realms, it's not like I have Ed's number on speed dial, he probably is not listening to me, but maybe you should ask him if you are that worried. Darrian (calm down Kuje) |
| Darrian07-20-05, 06:12 PM | You are right GothicDan, I do not have any logical choice for who would pick up Sunes portfolio, although, is her portfolio critical to a campaign world? Any suggestions? Yes, all the racial pantheons. Definitely the Elemental Gods but they would have to be more fleshed out, I have always thought they got underdeveloped in FR. Thanks Gothicdan, Darrian (looking up verisimilitude) |
| Kuje3107-20-05, 06:24 PM | Kuje, I am the free thinker, remember I am not the one in lockstep with everything Forgotten Realms (canon?). Darrian (calm down Kuje) I don't have Ed's number at all, nor his email adress. And wow, you are really stretching this, aren't you? How many times have I expressed my disagreement with canon lore? I can name hundreds of times in the past two years. Dan gave you some examples of the canon lore that I disagree with. Yup, so much for the free thinker thing you got going on here. So basically it's okay for you to criticize but it's not okay for us to criticize your criticism. And for the record, WOTC does read these boards. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 06:28 PM | You are right GothicDan, I do not have any logical choice for who would pick up Sunes portfolio, although, is her portfolio critical to a campaign world? Any suggestions? Think about it. Sune's portfolio is love and beauty. Do you know of ANY real life pantheon that has not included a deity who filled her role? I would say she is one of the most critical gods to the pantheon. In fact, ALL of the Greater Gods are critical, otherwise they wouldn't be Greater, because there wouldn't be enough people worshipping them to make them that status. :) If you absolutely did not want to add Sune (though I'm not sure why not), you could give her portfolios to Selune, as she originally held them during the time of Netheril, and kick up Selune to a Greater Power. Definitely the Elemental Gods but they would have to be more fleshed out, I have always thought they got underdeveloped in FR. It wasn't so much underdevelopment as much as the fact that they, personally, don't care much what goes on on the Prime Material Plane. |
| Darrian07-20-05, 06:34 PM | Kuje, let it go. Can't you see that Dan and I have moved passed this. I am currently working on my version of the FR pantheon. If you would like to be constructive maybe you can give me your input. Thanks man, Darrian |
| Kuje3107-20-05, 06:39 PM | Hey, Let's move this to a different thread as well, since it has nothing to do with this topic. :) I started one over in the magic, deity board. |
| GothicDan07-20-05, 06:43 PM | (Moved!) |
| Freakboy07-20-05, 11:53 PM | I know that most others won't agree with this, but I really want to see a Menzoberranzan hardcover that is on par with what was done with the Waterdeep sourcebook. I know there are gaggles of Drow fans out there and I would really like a rundown of whatever in game changes the WotSQ has had. Not only that, I would love some fully statted out NPC's in Menzo that I can use in our underdark campaigns. I doubt such a book will be made anytime soon, but I would love to see it none the less. Yes, I am a Drow fanboy.... Sue me :P |
| Starchaserva07-21-05, 12:39 AM | I'd like to see a source book on The Sword Coast, or maybe one specifically Neverwinter. Hell, it could even coincide with Neverwinter Nights 2 |
| Alac Luin07-21-05, 12:41 AM | I want a Kobold sorcebook. This could be written with the koblods point of view in mind. Example- in Menzoberranzan, one of the noble houses had kobolds slaves that they claimed only 1000 kobolds, but it is said that the tunnels could support 10 times that amount. These kobolds might think of themselves as a separate Nation in service to the Drow house they live under. The kobolds might think of the drow as “Divine messengers.” I'm a kobold fanboy. |
| Bocklin07-21-05, 01:43 AM | I can't see many of us buy a source book with only Kobold stuff in it. ;) Maybe it would be better as a novel? That would be fun to read. Bocklin I don't think there is enough people interested in a book like this, just me. But the amount of closet kobold fans may surprise some. Sometimes, if I forget to add smilies it's hard to tell that I was mostly joking. I don't think the Kobolds get enough love, and do wish there would be something more about them. The idea of a kobold novel is a good one. :D (although this will most likely never happen either :weep: ) |
| Old Sage07-21-05, 02:07 AM | There are 23 gods of Krynn. Not including Paladine and Takhisis, there are actually 26 gods of Krynn. |
| Old Sage07-21-05, 02:11 AM | And please step outside your box. If you didn't know, paganism is the fastest growing religion in modern day in the USA and Austrulia (sp?), and many other countries.Indeed. It surprises me, even here in Australia, how quickly this belief is growing. 'Tis much faster than it was only 5-to-10 years ago. |

Sorry for not getting it. :embarrass The idea of a kobold novel is a good one. :D (although this will most likely never happen either :weep: ) I am sure I would buy it! I am quite fond of Kobolds myself. I hope that Meepo wins the creatures contest on the WotC website. For the anecdote: in a campaign I DMed two years ago, the character of my girlfriend "adopted" Meepo (from an adapted, expanded version of the Sunless Citadel) through the use of the Leadership Feat. I gave him some Rogue level and he tagged along for some adventures, setting or disabling traps for the group and sneaking behind ennemy lines. We had a lot of fun with him! Bocklin |
