okay, all my players aiden2 kace and desies and minos, please quit reading.

Now, i am workin on my first campain and i could use sum adive. heres what i got so far, Pc's are gonna hear about a new port on the sword coast who are having a huge problems with rouges and bandits raiding caravans en route to the city. and pirate boarding merchant ships. the city was doing well until these attacks started. now the are in dire straights of there city failing and all the people inside becoming poor. so they (and i keep refering to the town as a whole, i just realized how hard this would be to fallow) send word to all the surrounding Area that they will pay for protection. the PC.s meet up in luskan and escort a caravan to the city. thats where the game starts. i have it set up where the city has a army and all the fighter and what not who came to help join the army. this entitles them to free food and lodging within the city. they are payed on commision based on dead rouges, dead whatever else (barbarians, goblins, kobolds, whatever) and they are payed for able bodied captured slaves to be resold. i have a bunch of small missions writen up. a few dungeons. i had this idea that the whole reason the town is being so devistated by theives is because they are all working for a guild out of bulders gate, and the leader is after specific item, one of which was supposedly en route to the town. my idea was that the PC's would get the items, think them only powerful weapons, but find out that they were keys to a cave in the spine of the world. the tree item i decided were a beard clasp( in the possesion of a dwarf wizard who they will befriend, later find dead, and tie in his missing clasp to the story), a sentient longsword( bane to drow, hates drow and drives it wielder to kill all drow, it will be already in the possesion of the guild, and they will have to try and get it) then a single arrow(story yet decided) i thought that these item whould fit into statues in a cave. there would be a dwarf statue with a place to fit the clasp, a human fiter with his hand positioned to hold a sword, and a dwaff with a bow srting drawm. sword in hand, then the arrow in the bow.
what i need is a story for the arrow, a histoy of it, and what could be in the cave. any other stories to happen after, and what level this campaign should be. any info in general would be great, any ideas, anything you could give me that i could use, thanks!

First of all, how experienced are the players? If they are new to roleplaying or D&D, they should start at low levels to get a feel for the game. If they are more experienced, you can start them at higher levels.

The singing arrow could have been made by a bard how was vein and created the arrows to leave his mark. This one was recoved intact.

As far as the cave goes, determine what it is/was used for. Or you can always roll on the random charts in the DMG.

how's this?

The arrow is a relic from the wood elf realm of Earlann, made by the sorcerers of that realm in their desperate battle against the demons who infested what was once ascalhorn. It is an arrow of slaying, which a defender of Earlann fored at a mighty balor, and which missed the demon and became stuck in a tree in what is now turlang's wood, in the Northeast section of the High Forest. The owner of the arrow and the bow from which it was fired was promptly slain by the balor, but a grieving relative crafted a statue of his cousin/sister/lover or whatever which could only be completed with the lsot projectile is returned.

hmm. I guess it's a bit freudian.

first of all, i would recommend using an elf for the statue with the bow. generally when you put the terms "dwarf" and "bow" together, you get a dwarf who flings hammers, not arrows.

as for the arrow itself, it's shaft could be made from the Tree of Life itself, in Suldanesselar (forgive me if its misspelled)

head could be an enchanted alloy of mithril, silver, and adamantite, forged with dragon's breath

the fletchings from a phoenix.

the shaft, head and maybe even the fletchings could be magically etched with runes, giving the following (suggested) properties:

-its virtually indestructable, except by the gods themselves
-it returns to the quiver once its flight is stopped (the character would just have to put a rune or something on his/her own quive, and it can still house other arrows.) it might only after a certain abount of time has passed, keeping it from becoming TOO powerful. the archer would have to choose the shot wisely.
-due to the silver in its head, damage done by it cannot be regenerated (applies for trolls, undead and such)
-it seeks the target (THACO bonus)
-it pierces all armor except dragon scales. (enemy AC penalty)
-if it hits the first target, if there are any other characters (including PCs) directly behind them, roll to see if they are hit as well, do that for each character in the line. it stops when it hits a wall. you have to be careful not to fire it when your own characters are in line.

Backstory
the arrow was one of a full quiver fashioned by a powerful elven archer (ranger class giving him the affinity with nature required to get the wood from the Tree of Life) whose name has been lost to time. (you could make up a name if you want, then name the arrow after him/her) The others of the quiver are scattered on the other planes, likely in the lower ones, and only this one remains in the Realms. They were lost when the archer and his/her party (the dwarf and the human fighter statues (the one the arrow fits in would be the elf) went to close a planar gate, through which the other arrows were inadvertently fired, save for the one. that one has changed hands many times.
before the party disappeared completely, though, they left the legacy of the statues, and if you place the items in the correct places, the door to the dungeon you created (or another one, if that already has a place) would open. the dungeon would have been the place where the archer's party stashed all of the gains from their adventures. only now, it's been swarmed by enemies from below (drow (need the sword here) and whatnot). Boom! dungeon crawl, equiptment, XP, and whatever the band had warded too heavily for the drow to steal. (you can't be making the party too rich from the start, so it would only be the most precious and valuable items-legendary weapons, artwork and such.) once the caverns are cleared, the party would also have a place to stash *their*stuff-after sealing off all entrance by the drow and other enemies with physical barriers and magical wards. the place might even have it's own mini-mythal, which now works with its full power and range with the drow gone. The long-dead elven archer having been famous and powerful enough for the mini-mythal idea to work. it might not be anything especially powerful, maybe just a 100-ft radius Protection from Evil spell centered on a precious stone.

my wrists are getting sore now, any further info available upon request

I just want to say that I am quite impressed by the last two posts. I may have to run with a similar idea...

wow, those two post were awesome, aspecialy avians. and avian, the third statue was always a elf, but i guess i forgot to make my thread clear to people who arent me, its a habit. but the whole story and arrow thing was great, and thing i am gonna go with it, but i cant decide between your arrow and the other one that other one the other guy came up with. i like the drow idea, and the protection from evil, i like the arrow stuck in tree thing, this is all really great stuff.
my group arnt novice players, or DM's for that matter, i am the newest addition to the group, and have been playing for just over a year. this is my second attempt at a campaign, the last one i gave up on, but this one has been fun to write so far, and the help from the boards is gold. specially your help avian;) .
i'm gonna print these post and get started throwing in the stats and DC's and the rest. i am very thinkful for the help, last time i tried to look for help on this board my plea fell on deaf ears (or in this case, blind eyes). i think i will go with the earlann arrow, but everything else i give credit to the teifling.

peace- :turkey:

you got some great ideas. i play tonight(my first time DM) and i used just about all of the stuff you gave me. i have a few ideas of what to put into the cave, but now i am stuck with what to do next. Do you have any involving either Silverymoon or maybe even Mithrall Hall or some other dwarven complex? i want to stick to this area for a while because it is what i am most familliar with. Maybe eventually send them to thay to roll around with the red wizards. a little side note: of the tree "key" items the PC'c will haveta find, i put the arrow under the watchfull eyes of the Harpells. my group has allready ran into them in other campaigns where i was a PC, and i know they will get a kick outa finding them. we even had a guy play a harpell once, it was, interesting. i am starting them out around level 5, and i expect them to gain another three or four levels by the time the last drow is smoten. so what do ya think??????

Even though the elven statue idea is cool I think you should make it where you have to shoot the arrow though a monster/whatever statue to set it I think that would be a interesting thing to do with it because putting stuff in a statue is so sterotypical (it's your first campagin, so it okay I did the same thing, but mine was more so) I just think you should add variation every once and a while to keep it interesting but this is just a sugguestion.
