| Herr Doktor02-12-04, 05:21 PM | I wanted to add something a little more interesting to this years Shieldmeet festival, and I've decided on Shausta's Oddities and Rarities. Shausta is a half-orc female who has dwelled for all of her years in the Savage North of Faerûn. She has been part of more than one adventuring band and has picked up much in her travels. She appears this year in Silverymoon for Shieldmeet and has two shows planned for the day. One is late enough that she'll be allowed to show off some of the more grotesque features of her collection without any trouble from the Rods. I need help coming up with Oddities and Rarities for her show. I've a few ideas, a stuffed beholder and lesson on beholder anatomy for one thing (Monstrous Arcana: I, Tyrant will be handy for this one). Any suggestions? |
| Capn Charlie02-12-04, 07:16 PM | No festival is complete without Oopah, the exploding ogre! A wonder he is! *boom* |
| Reefy02-12-04, 08:32 PM | A caged drider, complete with tamer if you wish (so long as he's got his own drider tamer's hat). ;) |
| Maskanodel02-12-04, 08:38 PM | How about a freakishly tall halfling or gnome?? Say 6 feet. |
| Reefy02-12-04, 09:01 PM | Who could forget the bearded woman (dwarven, of course)? :D Or for a twist, how about a male dwarf without a beard? |
| Melfius02-12-04, 09:10 PM | How about Thorilaunt, the half-dwarf/half-elf? |
| Kuje3102-12-04, 09:47 PM | Originally posted by Reefy Who could forget the bearded woman (dwarven, of course)? :D Don't a lot of people already see bearded female dwarves? Remember in FR female dwarves are all bearded unless they shave..... And if they weren't bearded then they wouldnt NEED to shave! |
| Wooly Rupert02-12-04, 11:29 PM | Originally posted by Melfius How about Thorilaunt, the half-dwarf/half-elf? There was someone in Myth Drannor (before the Fall) who was rumored to be half-elf/half-dwarf... |

| Kuje3102-12-04, 11:38 PM | Originally posted by Capn Charlie :uh-huh: No, just no. Seriously, no. ? What? They arnt human they are dwarves so they have different thoughts on beauty.... So sorry but female dwarves in FR have always been able to grow beards. Straight from the FRCS page 10, "Some female dwarves of Faerun can grow beards too, often passing as males among nondwarves of the surface lands. Dwarven woman may choose to shave thier beards to match human-style expectations of beauty, while others glory in luxurious plaited beards that match thier hair or wear sharply cut goatees." |
| Wooly Rupert02-13-04, 01:02 AM | Female dwarves in D&D have long had beards, officially. It's just that everyone has ignored this. |
| Capn Charlie02-13-04, 01:07 AM | All the art disagrees. That and it says some can. Technically some human women can grow beards. Don't make it the norm... |
| Herr Doktor02-13-04, 01:24 AM | That's true... I've yet to see artwork depicting a female dwarf with a beard, or any facial hair at all. I was thinking of attractions a little less silly, but thanks for the input thus far. |
| Kuje3102-13-04, 01:37 AM | Originally posted by Capn Charlie All the art disagrees. That and it says some can. Technically some human women can grow beards. Don't make it the norm... The art disagrees with a lot of things. That doesn't mean jack. I mean even the dwarven art disagrees with the text about how some dwarven skin tones look. Do we really need to get into the old Drizz't artwork? Or the artwork where Alustrial has brown hair? Art doesn't mean any thing, now the text means what it says. And in FR dwarven women have always been able to have beards, 1e, 2e, and 3e still says that. |
| Fredegar The White02-13-04, 01:38 AM | I've yet to see artwork depicting a female dwarf with a beard, or any facial hair at all. Yeah that's because the artists themselves do not want to accept the truth! I'll add that most dwarves in the art do not have moustaches (sp?)! On topic you could add Elven woman with a beard!! That would be monstrous and terrifying! |
| Wooly Rupert02-13-04, 01:40 AM | Considering the quality of some of the artwork, I'd hardly consider it conclusive evidence. I go with what is written. Here's an example: just where does it say that Drizzt Do'Urden wears a funky gold thing on his head? And I don't recall where it was, exactly, but I recall an illustration of Alustriel with brown hair, when all Seven Sisters have silver hair... Page 281 of the FRCS depicts the Xanathar. Officially, beholders are spherical... Now look at page 283. Where has it ever said Manshoon wears funky headgear? Most of the illustrations are nothing more than filler. The written word is canon; a drawing by someone who may not even be familiar with a particular character/creature is not. As Kuje31 points out, bearded dwarven women have been official for many years. Besides, dwarven men are proud of their beards, and take great care in their upkeep. Why wouldn't they find hairy cheeks on a woman attractive? |
| Herr Doktor02-13-04, 01:44 AM | Not to mention that Fzoul Chembryl supposedly has red hair when every colored picture I've seen of him has him with blond/yellow hair... |
| Wooly Rupert02-13-04, 01:46 AM | Originally posted by Herr Doktor Not to mention that Fzoul Chembryl supposedly has red hair when every colored picture I've seen of him has him with blond/yellow hair... You know, I was just looking at his illustration in the FRCS and thinking about that... When Zhentil Keep attacked Shadowdale during the ToT, didn't Cyric see Fzoul and shout "Red hair!" to get his attention? |
| Kuje3102-13-04, 01:59 AM | Originally posted by Fredegar The White On topic you could add Elven woman with a beard!! That would be monstrous and terrifying! Except elves in FR have no body hair except for eyebrows, lashes, and scalp..... Yes this means they dont have any hair um well we can't mention that area......! And yes I guess I'm strange because I actually think about these things..... :) |
| Fredegar The White02-13-04, 02:14 AM | Ok Kuje!!! Thats it! I've had it with you! I am putting you in my sig as Sexpertius Faerunius Kujeus 31us! You are the first person i will put in my sig! And you meant the armpit...... right? Anyway don't be so sure you are alone in this;) ! |

RIGHT............ |
| Nahar02-13-04, 02:56 AM | Now you've started this, it won't stop... It took hours of severe in-game punnishment to make us stop laughing at the male gamer with the female elven PC after one of us innocently pointed that fact out. |
| tauster02-13-04, 05:24 AM | Originally posted by Capn Charlie All the art disagrees. That and it says some can. Technically some human women can grow beards. Don't make it the norm... sorry to contradict you (actually... no. iīm not sorry. :D ). please take a look at "demihuman deities", page 6 and 7. there are five female dwarven priests (priestesses? priestessesses? no matter...) shown. 4 out of those 5 have a clearly visible beard (deep duerra, berronar truesilver, haela brightaxe, marthammor duin), only the priestess of sharindlar is somwhat ambiguous, the fine lightbrown line under her chin and cheek could be interpreted as a narrow beard, but i would not insist on that... my personal opinion is that female dwarves most of the time tend to smaller, more "artistic" beards, not those big bushy ones we see on all (well, most of) the males. but then again- who says there is no such thing as dwarven fashion trends? :) perhaps in some citadel big bushy beards for females are en vogue? i dimly remember the statement that the dwarf in the dnd-movie made about purpose of a femalesī beard. even though i try hard to repress any memory about that crappy movie. tauster |
| Capn Charlie02-13-04, 07:23 AM | Art has already been rendered "bunk" by the rest, you can't have it both ways. It says SOME can grow beards. SOME. Side whiskers I can buy, even accept. BUt full on beards? I'm sorry but adds way too much sexual ambiguity to dwarves. Already ya got elves so skinny that they have to get to third base to find out if it's a chick or not. I really don't want "beard lifting" rituals as dwarven mating rites. "Dang, I couldda sworn ya was a lady Bralg, wanna pretend anyway? I did court ya for 50 years after all" |
| Reefy02-13-04, 09:30 AM | Originally posted by Kuje31 Don't a lot of people already see bearded female dwarves? Remember in FR female dwarves are all bearded unless they shave..... And if they weren't bearded then they wouldnt NEED to shave! Oh gods, what have I started? It was intended as a joke. Female dwarves have always been able to grow beards, or so I thought. Not all of them do, and in my head those that did often kept them shorter and more tidy than the males. |
| WizO_BigSister02-13-04, 10:51 AM | Keep it seemly people ... this is a site for all ages  And please ... no thread hijacking to argue your favourite subject. So less of the debate about artwork, and female dwarven facial hair and more of the oddities and rarities please :D |
| Cunning Linguist02-13-04, 11:05 AM | Well, if you really want to dig deep into this subject, in Dragon 279, there was a article about Leaf and Thorn, The Secret Life of Elves, where you can read about Sex Roles and Sexual Experimentation of the elves. (oh, and this was back in the day when WotC published Dragon, and they never put any mature warning on my mag.. so I guess the article and it's subjects where "for all ages") |

They are not humans! And in every edition for FR it says female dwarves can grow beards but SOME shave them off! Beards, not side whiskers! Also to the poster who mentioned the movie reference that was in the LOTR's movies, the 2nd one I believe. To keep this on topic: Maybe some exotic animals that are normally not seen in that area.....? |

| Herr Doktor02-13-04, 01:33 PM | Thank you all for this interesting discussion on hair in odd places, or the lack thereof. Lets be done with it now, however... Does anyone have an oddity or rarity to contribute? |
| Wooly Rupert02-13-04, 01:49 PM | How about some of the less-dangerous critters from the Underdark? Announcer-type: "Yes folks, in the deepest darkness these creatures dwell. They come from a land miles below your feet, a land of drow, mind flayers, and other horrific monsters! Thanks to the bravery of valiant adventurers, you can now see these animals in the safety and warmth of the sun! I give you the: <whatever>!" |

I give you the: <whatever>!" ...FLUMPH! thatīs one critter no curiosities-show can afford to miss! :) it was detailed in dragon #246 (april 1998) "ecology of the flumph", p.76. i found no online-picture of it, but itīs description & stats can be found here (http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/aberration/flumph.htm). iīve made a point of mentioning the flumph several times to my players but never detailing what it is, how it looks and so on. only that itīs one of the funniest critters in the history of dnd. since they abstain from buying too many rulebooks like monstrous compendia etc... (thus, i am still able to surprise them with new monsters without having out-of-character-knowledge getting in the way of fun) or looking in the web, speculations run rampant. one fine day, they will encounter one. oh how iīm looking forward to that day... :smirk: tauster |

They are making a second one but it contains mostly new critters. |
| conanb102-25-04, 03:40 PM | A minor demon confined in a magical area by a powerful sorceror would be a good side show. But make sure the announcer says something about the emergency cleric standing by in case it gets loose. "Yes this creature is from the abyss! Don't get to close the thing is very dangerous. As you can see we keep a trained cleric on duty at all times to banish the thing should it get loose." Etc. The demon may be very very minor, or even an illusion if the place was a scame, in which case the cleric isn't trained in anything since it's all just a magic illusion, one that commoners couldn't see through. :P |

Anyways, a display on small Lantan made devices could be apropreate. A display or various religious symbols employed by humonoid clerics. |
| conanb102-26-04, 12:39 PM | This would be a good idea for an adventure even. Especially if this rarities and oddities really had something rare and odd. Something that all manner of powerful mages want or want destroyed. Like perhaps they show anti-magic man, a man that nullifies magic. For some strange reason, that man actually produces a dead magic zone around him for say 30 ft or something. That's something that any real mage would want to control or destroy. The players just happen to be there to see the attempted kidnapping, and possible foiling of it. Then that leads to protecting said anti-magic man, but not being able to get close to him without losing their own magical capabilities. |
| Alac Luin02-26-04, 12:47 PM | Originally posted by conanb1 anti-magic man I am not criticizing this idea at all, This could be interesting, but when put in form of Anti-Magic Man I get the image of a guy in tights with a big A on his chest. |
| ENHenry02-26-04, 01:06 PM | Blinded Catoblepas. Baby Roc (just a normal eagle dyed Red and Purple). Juggling Acrobatic Kobolds. (They were kicked out of their clan and Shausta gave them a job and a "home".) The Savage Orc-Man (just an orc working for the sideshow, Shausta's husband, dressed up in trbal furs, snarling incoherently, and slamming himself against the cage. He actually speaks quite intelligently, and with a british accent a la the character Chumley from Asprin's Myth Books) |
| Israfel66602-26-04, 01:23 PM | Modrons. They're always fun. |
| Plunderer_of_the_planes02-26-04, 11:14 PM | A miniature giant space hamster named "boo" :D |
