Old Player starting agian [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-28-07, 08:46 PM Hello all I'm an old player trying to catch up with the new rules and my question is, What happened to creatures hit only with magical weapons? Like vampires, gargoyles, and werewolves to name a few. Thanks for any help.

things have kind of been turned around since the earlier editions of AD&D.

In the various monster manuals under the monsters entry it will tell you what sort of damage reduction a creature has now.

Damage reduction can be

silver as in the case of lycanthropes

magical weapon for other things

cold iron for still other things

slashing or bludgeoning or piercing meaning a weapon that fits in that category can hit and do damage a little better then something else.

theres more but I am asleep right now and can't think of them:)

One of the big differences between the editions is that it used to be you needed a particular type plus on a magic item to hurt some things

DR +2 for example (meaning you needed a +2 weapon). Now it would read something like

DR 5/ magic. Damage reduction 5/magic meaning if you have a magic weapon, great, if not then subtract 5 from your damage.

You don't need a particular sized + any more. It used to be you needed a +1 for some things a +2 for some things or a +3 for still others. Now it is simply magic or one of the other substances like silver, cold iron, ironwood, bludgeoning etc etc

Check the Hypertext D20 System Reference Document (http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm) for a very rulesy breakdown of the game system as it stands now.

While useful, I would still highly recommend purchasing the core rulebooks (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual) when you get a chance.
