| SOKAR08-11-04, 04:44 PM | All right, I have aquired a set of OLD AD&D products. (I'm not even sure what edition they are.) Anyway, is the forgotten realms material sitll "compatible"? I have skimmed through the books, and it looks like I should be able to use it, but is there anything in the current edition that I am missing? Thx. |
| J. Grenemyer08-11-04, 05:01 PM | Hello, Well, depending on how old the books are that you got ahold of, you’ll most likely not be able to use the rules material (since it may all be 2E). Some of the events in your older books may have been superceded by newer events (as detailed in the FRCS and other sources) as well. That said, my 3rd Edition Campaign would not be all that great if it weren’t for all the 2E material I’ve incorporated into it. So I guess the answer is “yes” and “no.” ;) :D |
| ruleslawyer08-11-04, 05:36 PM | As an owner of many 1e/2e FR products, I can say: Yes! Most 1e/2e FR material, being relatively light on the rules, is quite compatible with 3e FR stuff, and really helps flesh out the setting properly. Some caveats to note: 1) The FR has a progressive timeline. Thus, the first FR boxed set assumes a "present date" of 1357/1358 DR, while we're now up to 1373 in the newest FR material. If you're running a campaign set in the WotC "present" of the Realms, you'll want to note that various events may have altered the descriptions you find in the old material. 2) Some NPC levels have been altered, both up and down. Decide which you feel like using. 3) Most iconic Realms magic items and spells have received a reworking in 3e. Thus, "compatibility" isn't so much an issue as just having access to Magic of Faerun, the FRCS, and the PGtF. |

Has to agree to all of this, actually I use my 1e and 2e material more then my 3e material since 3e's material has more rules instead of realmslore. Also the world is now actually offically 1374. :) |
| SOKAR08-11-04, 06:32 PM | Thank you. |

Also the world is now actually offically 1374. :) According to my calculations, it's Elesias 1373 - it's five months since PGtF was published, so (according to the formula given in the FRCS) game time has moved forward two months from the date in that product (Kythorn 1373). You mentioned in another thread that this was because a novel has now been set in 1374, but other novels I could name have been set ahead of the "official" setting date at that point, so that's nothing to go by. By your reasoning, the official date for the setting moved to 1372 with the publication of Pool of Twilight in 1993 and not with the FRCS in 2001 (despite several products in the interim giving "official" setting dates in the 1360s)... |
| AvengedMutablegenus08-11-04, 08:59 PM | Kuje31's Signature Disclaimer: Arguing with me is bad for your health! Because if you do, you will get a tongue lashing! You have been warned. Ah, Sorry to inform you, Kuje31 is always right, about everything related to FR, read his signature that i've quoted . So Demetrios i'm afraid that you are wrong |

And I told you that that info in the FRCS is wrong because of lay offs, quitings, and firings. You can also find where Rich said, in the old Ask the Game designer thread, where that info in the FRCS was no longer being followed. Also that Pool's of Novel was written under a different company that had a different policy. And your still wrong, read that passage on page 260, "We expect to advance the game world through sourcebooks and NOVELS." So Mr. Baker's new novel trilogy has moved the world to 1374 officially. Novels are official and so the year is now 1374. So what if the sourcebooks havn't caught up yet? The novels come out faster then the sourcebooks and FR is now more of a novel driven world. Rich posted on 1/5/04: Kythorn 1, 1373. We haven't really stuck with our intended world progression as well as we wanted to. I'm afraid I couldn't give you a good answer about "Thousand Orcs," try over on the book boards. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote:Originally posted by Drake Ambrose Hey Rich I hope you enjoyed your time off! I have a question that I feel a bit silly for asking but as of FRPG what is the game world month year. I remember in the FR 3.0 source you mentioned a rough 5months in the real world=2months game time, however that doesn't really give a reference of when we should start counting from. And perhaps this is a little off topic but in the 1000 Orc novels what is the relational timeline in the game? Really enjoying the thread and thanks for answering us! So Demetrios i'm afraid that you are wrong AMG, please keep your abrasive comments to yourself. As for the year being 1374, Kuje -is- right. The novels are as much a part of the FR world as the sourcebooks, and when an event happens in the novels, the sourcebooks are written to comply with that event. Case in point: The PGtF incorporates the Shadovar's involvement in the Evereska ordeal into the sourcebooks. The novels were written before the PGtF, and the PGtF updated the realms' sourcebooks. |

| Zanan08-12-04, 03:42 PM | The last date I have found in a sourcebook was 16th Ukta 1372 regarding the War of the Spider Queen in the PGtF.* I do not much care about novels and events there, as they tend to use weeks and month there, generally regarding local happenings, without being very precise. Thus, while I know that we already have book V of the WotSQ series, I'd be reluctant to use a date after the one given above, since apart from what is written in one novel (maybe even only a chapter), near to nothing is known about the rest of the Realms as such. To many if's and but's left to flesh out a campaign or an adventure without more infos. You see, I'd like to stick to the Realms as they are and change very little to the official stuff. But that's just me. No, I do not have Serpent Kingdoms and if there are updates, very well ... |

Game material only, nothing from The Products Which Have No Names. That said, how are we supposed to know the "correct" date if that date has been established in one of The Products Which Have No Names? |
| Faraer08-22-04, 06:58 PM | No, 'Posts are free to reference novels when it is appropriate to a gaming topic being discussed' -- and presumably to a discussion of the Realms per se, independent of medium. (Though a recent post of mine which I thought met this requirement was deleted.) |
