| JohnCJ10-12-03, 01:12 PM | Canonically, there's at least one Portal between Kara-Tur and Faerun (a shipping Portal in the Sea of Fallen Stars, IIRC). I wante to use OA in my last campaign, so I simply increased the number of Portals between the two areas. The Portals were a joint financial venture by Western trading companies (both legitimate and fronts for the Iron Throne) and Kara-Tur interests---allowing for trade between the two realms. I initially placed the Portals in Ordulin, Procampur, Baldur's Gate and (or course) Waterdeep. The Portals doubled as diplomatic embassies for both cultures, as well as trade avenues. Immigration was strictly controlled by the officials who controlled the Portals, but enough Easterners emigrated (through bribery, influence or or trickery) that within 2 years, each of these cities had a thriving Kara-Tur expatriate community ("Kara-Town" was the best I could come up with). That was how I was able to justify using Oriental Advenures in my game. |
| Alrunic Silverfyre10-12-03, 01:19 PM | Great thinking JohnCJ. I did something very similiar in my campaign but placed the portals in Waterdeep, Suzail (our campaign is centered in Cormyr), Silverymoon, and Luskan. These portals have increased trade and immigration between both Faerun and Kara-Tur. |
| Alzrius10-12-03, 01:35 PM | Another way would be to just set a FR campaign set in eastern Faerun. Unapproachable East already talks about towns made up of Shou expatriats and such, along with the Golden Way, the long, long road from there to Kara-Tur. So of course that whole area would be rife with eastern influences. |
| Andvaranaut10-13-03, 08:39 PM | Of course, you could always extend the trading route "The Golden Way" so that it becomes a direct path to Kara-Tur/Rokugan instead of futzing with the creation of more portals. After all, the description of the OA lands (and the 2E description of Kara-Tur) flat-out says they are exceedingly xenophobic, and difficult to access by gaijin. |

Hey, that's neat. I guess that explains how Tamoko from Baldur's Gate came to be with the Iron Throne. |
| Amoun10-14-03, 09:10 AM | I always thought OA very much like Kara-Tur, hence I really made no distinction and just said Kara-Tur basically IS Rokugan, just map is mildly different... and if you really like oriental adventures you can always have your wonderful adventurers actually go to Kara-Tur and they would be really out of place and neck deep in all kinds of "racist" issues... after all the Kara-Turans are xenophobic, much like ancient china and those areas, meaning they dont look happily upon outsiders :) |
| Skiv_the_Rat10-15-03, 02:38 AM | Ahh, good old Kara-Tur. Fun memories. In my own game I just got my old OA stuff out and updated the storyline to present day. All the nuts and bolts are in the new book so it was easy enough. In fact I went a step farther and integrated some of the new stuff, the clans, and some of the india inspired material into it all. If you want any specifics just ask. |
| TionneDawnstar10-15-03, 05:57 PM | Ah Skiv... You finally came out of the shadows and posted. I was wondering when you were going to! *hug*:D |
| Masakado10-15-03, 07:26 PM | Personally, I put Shou & Kozakuran embassies all over the place, especially in Cormyr, Amn, & Baldur's Gate. Gotta keep those Tuigen in line |
| Serinde10-16-03, 03:23 PM | Originally posted by Andvaranaut Of course, you could always extend the trading route "The Golden Way" so that it becomes a direct path to Kara-Tur/Rokugan. It already is. :) See, for instance, the FR Atlas, which shows the whole bleedin' thing. (To Kara-Tur, that is--of course Rokugan is a different world.) |
| Andvaranaut10-16-03, 08:23 PM | I'm using the old 2ed Faerun atlas, and all it shows is the Golden Way ending abruptly on the outskirts of "Kara-Tur" (though it may be called "the Outlands," far as I remember). After all - why buy the new stuff when you've already got the old ones? All you need to do for the "remerging empires" is draw a big, fat, 'ol X where they belong. |
| Ranger REG10-16-03, 10:31 PM | Just get Kara-Tur 1st and 2nd edition AD&D material, either from eBay or ESD e-Books (PDF) from www.svgames.com. |
