Eladrinstar 06-28-07, 02:09 AM	I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times, but there is no search function, and this is probably a newbie question though I be not one, but why in the world are the realms forgotten? They are just the opposite, FR has a plethora of history and lore. So whats with the title?
msatran 06-28-07, 02:15 AM	It was meant to be a world where there were dozens of ancient, buried kingdoms for people to explore and delve up, all for the DM to develop. Now, instead, people are developing them, and we get to suck it. :)

dave_the_DM 07-01-07, 09:52 AM	Too funny, I just logged on to ask this very same question. Thus, from what I'm hearing, "Forgotten Realms" is not a term used by those who live there, but by "Us gamers" to refer to a world we have long "Forgotten". Et al?

Old Sage 07-01-07, 08:00 PM	When Realms folk speak of 'the land generally' -- the human and political more than the natural world -- they think of 'the Realms'. This isn't a contraction of 'Forgotten Realms' -- rather, 'Forgotten Realms' is 'the Realms' from the point of view of modern-day Earth. The slightly less common term 'Faerűn', which means 'home' (in use if not in etymology), is used interchangeably with 'the Realms'. 'Abeir-Toril' or 'Toril' is rarely used except by scholars and sages, and that global conception of the world is equally uncommon.
Karsus the Mad 07-01-07, 08:12 PM	That is one good Storyline idea... It is indeed. I had thought about running a game in FR wherein the players played as themselves, having accidently passed through a portal while on a camping trip. Then I realized it wouldn't be much fun to run a game where everyone was either 1st level commoners, or 1st level experts, didn't speak any of the languages, etc:P
Zsych 07-01-07, 08:20 PM	You undervalue your level 7 Scientific Knowledge. You could be rich, and you could use the money you make to learn magic :) ... i think part of the point would be to have your characters grow upward from level 1(assuming they chose an adventuring life... or had it chosen for them). Looting a corpse of something might be much more interesting if your life depended on it. And getting a super-weapon, would be so much cooler, if you were experiencing it as an extention of RL.
XHereticX 07-02-07, 07:59 AM	I like to think about the Realms as the "forgotten" aspects of our own planet earth. In a sense, forgotten earth. It is what earth would look like if the ancient civilizations survived and magic existed. Plus it is also a collection of "realms" that have been cast aside by other worlds which moved on and came to the Realms by means of portal. In a way, it is kind of like the hollow world of Mystara, a haven for "forgotten realms."
