Outside inspirations? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Question. Have any of you found story/character(NPCs,PCs) inspiration(s) for your Realms games from outside sources? Say : A movie? A television show? A comic book? A video game? Life? Maybe even a song...

I'm most interested in hearing of the sources that inspired...and what exactly they birthed within your games/campaigns.

04-01-04, 09:12 AM i used indiana jones to create a halfling thief who´s kind of an explorer or archeologist, complete with being as unlucky as indy, but without the whip.

the indy- stereotype was used to create one pc in my campaign: a priest of shaundakul- this time WITH whip. he´s fond of using it to ensnare opponents and even developed a spell called "watery whip".

the same player modeled an undead- hunting priest of kelemvor after the boss of the vampire-hunters in "john carpenters vampire", complete with black studded leather armor and and all...

another player insisted in playing a necromancer after playing diablo 2, so our group (the same that the shaundakul-priest is in) has a thavyan wizard (not the 3e prestige class!) with amnesia, specialising in necromantic spells that do not animate undead (except undead vegetable. don´t ask...). the player grudgingly accepted that i will not allow evil pc in the campaign, so the necromancer has a strong hate against undead creatures... that´s the only one example where "outside inspiration" was REALLY complicated to implement into play; most of the time it´s just fun to use non-dnd sources of inspiration.

04-01-04, 10:14 AM I played a specialty priest of Lathander whose personality was based on Charles Emerson Winchester III from M*A*S*H... Unfortunately, that campaign folded after only a few sessions.

04-01-04, 11:33 AM My epic level wizard's (started 11 years ago) childhood was inspired by lyrics of the Metallica/Diamondhead song 'Am I Evil?'

I'm a big fan of finding inspiration from non-fantasy sources.
