Hello FR'ers! :)

I need inspiration. There might be an FR campaign starting up and I've got NO inspiration for a character. It's a kinda "any race goes" sorta deal, starts at 6th level, with stat rolls of: 17, 16, 15, 13, 12, 10 (my 4d6 loved me at the time).

As a note, NO drow or Genasi, there are already those in play.

Give me your fantastic and original ideas! :)

How about a Half-Orc? With stats like that, I'd suggest either Fighter, Ranger, Barbarian, or Rogue.

One thing, though: Are those stats definitely tied to an ability, or can you shift them around?

given the way he said them wihtout any abilities linked I would say you could move them around as you like. maybe something weird like a LN half elven monk 3/bard 3: Dex 17, Cha 16, Con 15, Str 13, Int 12, Wis 10 could be a fairly fun mix - not a "lead" character but a good group player.

I do 1/2 Orcs alot in Greyhawk...I'm looking for something very "FR-ish"...you know, something fruity. ;)

Yeah, the stats can move around, and as far as I know there are no lawful bards. :)

When I need character concepts I usually just read races of fearun, the core campaign setting book, the regional books etc...

Here is a few I come up with at the top of my head:
An Avariel that is sent out to gather as much information as possible about the surrounding world.
A Hin Wandermage that is looking for his master that mysteriusly dissappered.
A Paladin of Illmater that sets out to promote compassion and self sacrefice.

They are not very advanced at the moment but can easily be expanded.

There are many cases of Lawful bards in FR.

And what exactly do you mean by "very FR"? If that's the case, I would recommend an Elf or a Human or a Dwarf.

Bah, lawful bard...ptooey! ;)

I have free reign, could be duergar, orges, kobolds, avariels, etc...the sky is the limit. I'm trying to come up with something unique that still is FR at heart.

The few ideas I had were:

Gloamling wizard/shadow adept
Human cleric of Waukeen (an odd choice for adventurers)
Saytyr Barbarian

But none have "clicked" and made me me go "I HAVE TO PLAY THIS!!" :)

Dude... go for a level 6 succubus (or incubus) as defined in Savage Species. After advancing 6 more levels, you can start adding class levels of your choice. With a high Charisma score, Bard or Sorcerer would be perfect. Of course, Charisma can also be useful to clerics, and a demonic cleric can be fun (depending on which patron diety you choose).

My buddy is playing an air genasi, who is a Windwalker of Shaundakul. He acts a bit like J Peterman from Seinfeld since his PC has been all over the continent. He likes bringing up odd anctedotes about his travels during a gaming session. It is pretty fun. The Windwalker is a decent class. It has a rangers BAB and you can continue to go up in priest spells. Plus you can Windwalk at will at 3 or 4th level and get featherfall at will at 1st. Since you do not want to be a genasi you can be a halfelf and be this class. You need to worship Shaundakul though.

Gold Dwarf Great Rift Skyguard. :D

Hippogriff (or Griffin, I don't remember which) mount, parachute wings on your back, and a disturbing tendency to leap off your mount's back, while it's flying, at random intervals. :ayyyy!:

You haven't told us where the campaign is going to take place, do you play good or evil campaign, is it basic hack & slash or more role-playing game so it's hard to present you with ideas. You should also note what books your group have access to so we don't suggest something you can't take because you don't have access to.

Good call, I don't know much myself as it's an ongonig campaign (with a fire genasi wiz and drow cleric of Elistrae(sp?) ). I know it'd be a "Good" campaign, and anything goes, any published FR book (and I could probably even convince for homebrew stuff).

I was intrigued by the Knight of the Weave from Champions of Valor, seems to be able to make a character like the old D&D elves that could wear armour and cast spells and use all weapons.

Anyone used this PrC?

Why not try a wemic sorceror or ranger.

Wemic is quite unusual and very FR (at least in the south).

Want something fun : go for a Tannaruk redeemed paladin of Torm, Tyr or even harder Moradin...

from Gothic:

think of a lawful bard as a roleplaying challenge - there is nothing in the rules prohibiting it so why not??

Still you want something outthere so why not try some thing like a Fey'ri druid or an Avariel ranger sorceror or (from the lost empires book) a warrior mage from ___________ (drat early morning memory what is the name of that hidden city in the underdark that has the last of the other ancient magic empire) have them just converting to that knight of the weave you like.

youre right - theres nothing prohibiting a lawful bard, just in getting levels for it...so you could have a bard who was, say, made lawful by a deck of many things, and retains his levels of bard but cant gain any new ones.

That's interesting...a Deep Imaskari Knight of the Weave...hmm...That's unbe-weave-able!! :P

But actually a good idea, I like the Deep Imaskari.

On the off topic of this thread about Bard Alignment. As DM I usualy allow any alignment for a Bard, after all the only thing a Bard really needs to have is at least a decent Charisma

I guess to me there seems to be a difference between something native to the Realms and something that is intrinsically an iconic FR type character. While its true that the races from Underdark, for example, are FR races (well, except for the Duergar, Drow, Derro, and Grimlocks), there isn't an archetypical story of characters of that race in Faerun. That is not to say that playing them isn't fun or couldn't fit in a campaign, but its not neccissarily iconic to the Realms.

Dwarven Battleragers (Shield Dwarves), Elven Bladesingers (Gold or Silver Elves), Elven Spellsingers (Gold or Silver), Vilhon Reach Druids (Humans), Daleland Rangers (Human or Half-elven), Rashemi Berserkers (Human Barbarians), Hathrans (Human Female Spellcasters), Cormyrean Purple Dragon Knights (Human Paladins or Fighters), Uthgardt Barbarians (Humans), Halruaan Wizards (Humans), Eyes of Horus (Human Paladins), and Harper Agents (Humans, Half-elves) all at their hearts are simple combinations of "core" classes and races, sometimes advanced with a Realms specific PrC, that are very iconic to the Forgotten Realms, and spring to mind much more readily when thinking of the heroes of tales of the Realms than exotic races like Loxo, Wemics, Gloamings, Deep Imaskari, etc.

lol! Unbe-weave-able. Good one, man. :D

Yeah, Deep Imaskari would likely be a good idea. There pretty much the only humanoid/human I know of that really lives underground.

Sure, their anscestors scoffed at divine influence (and regretted it), but supposedly their descendents are looking at it more with cautious curiosity in a few cases.

You want something fruity? then definitely go for an avariel Ftr3 (ECL 6), with Weapon Focus (Scythe) (double damage on a dive attack as it is a piercing weapon), Power Attack, Combat Expertise and Improved Trip. You could really mess up the enemies that way.

Later on, at 4th level, I would take Weapon Specialization (Scythe), then at 6th I would add Flyby Attack and Improved Flight (which lets you dive bomb an enemy from 30 feet [cost 15 move], attack him, turn 180 degrees back towards the up direction [cost 10 move; possible via your Improved Flight feat, which grants you a Good flying maneovrability -- avariels are usually average flyers], and climb back up 10 feet [cost 20 move] and if you're DM is nice, leftover 5 feet of movement can be used upwards as well, for a total of 12.5 feet height [total cost: 50-foot move = fly speed of the avariel]. On the second round, another [5] gets you to a height of 15, and another [30] gets you to a total height of 30 feet; 180 degrees back down [cost 10], [total cost 45] which leaves you with a standard action up at 30 feet (using a ring, armor, or weapon power is ideal... anything that doesn't require you to draw something else or occupy your left hand, which you need to swing your scythe next round.

Repeat the above until enemies are dead. Very effective fighting method when alone and fighting things with no ranged weapon (unless you're protected against arrows, in which case you're laughing).

a lawful bard in 3.5 is only allowed with Devoted Performer and you have to have paladin in you also

but that is by RAW anyone can house rule diffrently

I'll tell you what I do. Screw where it says to be conservative in the DM's guide about PrCs. I look at a prestige class that I like. I find every approach I can make at that prestige class. I.E., not just what will get me there, but what kind of character I can roleplay. Consider this, with stats like those, you can go lots of places. I don't recommend a spellcaster, I usually save those for average rolls and then a perfect one, but that's just me.

I know you said you don't have access to RoF, but if you can find it someplace, that is the only FR book I have ever read where I liked every single PrC in there. I personally recommend a battlerager, I've played one and I love it. For a battelrager build I would do something like Str:17, Con 16 Dex 15 Int 13 Wis 12 Cha 10. To get to that PrC, take one level in Barbarian and 4 in Fighter. Take the Tireless feat at 1st level, and he can rage all he wants without ever getting tired, and can even sleep in his armor, so he doesn't have to don it if the party get's attacked camping. Get a two-handed weapon, or a dwarven war-axe and a shield if you want AC, and the damage will be crazy. Take what skills you want but max out intimidate. After that, I don't have any recommendations. When I played, after my dwarf got Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat, I took Improved Grapple and got Armor Spikes, and did tons of damage when I grappled. I got the idea from Thibbledorf Pwent, if you've heard of him. Do that and you'd have an awesome char.

But I know you not just looking for something good, you want something interesting. That guy was fun to roleplay personally, because he was always loud and obnoxious, drank all the time but never got drunk, and used the intimidate skill to get almost anything he wanted. Nobody liked him, and he wasn't an idiot but he acted like one, running into battle headfirst without any tact.

But that's just a suggestion. The rest of the stuff in the RoF book is really good, and you can do well with stat rolls like that with my personal favorites, the Bladesinger and the Warrior Skald. Other than that, just scour the FR books you have access to for good PrC's, and pick a really interesting deity that complements your character, or perhaps pick a deity and build a character around that.

I was bummed as there's a wizard and a cleirc, both classes I wanted to play, but I firmly believe in strong parties, so I realize they need muscle and thievery.

So many options...Realms has almost TOO many options!! :P :D
