So, anyone have any ideas for sprucing up straight D&D combat? Is there a place for Book of Nine Swords anime-epics in Forgotten Realms or does it break the mood?

If you want something, there's a place for anything in the Realms... I'd think Thesk with its Golden Way influences would be a great place to introduce stuff like that really, if one were of a mind to. Could do it almost anywhere though with a little bit of inspiration. As to whether it fits with the Realms... not really, but what you do at home shouldn't be affected by that I don't think.

This article has been around for a while, but in case you haven't seen it yet- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070911 It puts some backround into how the Tome of Battle can be integrated into the Realms. The ToB is one of my favorite sources by far because it makes playing a melee or stealthy type character more fun, providing TONS of options.
Oh, and I don't see how the ToB stuff is any more 'anime'-ish than wiz/sor spells besides maybe their name.

Another options i've posted before on other forums is making readied actions immediate actions instead. This gives more realism to the game IMO because your reacting to someone else's actions. For example, a character using a longspear can set it against a charge as a readied action. The monster might not now charge because of that. If it's changed to an immediate action, the monster charges, but because of your training with the weapon, your reaction is almost second nature and you set your spear. Same thing for counterspelling, it makes for more 'movie-style' or 'cinematic' spell duels. Also, using called shots is another option for ranged combatants. Targeting a creature's arm so it drops a weapon or a leg to reduce it's landspeed are now possible. And, Khaelieth has come up with a really cool critical hit chart which does additional effects depending on d% roll. Hope some of that helps.
