What's the best way you've ever started a new party, either as a DM or as a player?

For me, it was a party where we'd all grown up together in the same small town. The group had a fierce loyalty to their home region and each other. One of my favorite parts of it was that my character was a cleric and her brother was a paladin of the same god. Ultimately, we were inseparable and would die for each other without thinking about it.

The time honored 'You walk into a bar and the guy in the corner picks you and the guy over there and the girl over there because you look like you are a bunch of adventurers. Surprise! Here's your party!'

Thanks for your memories.

Best party start I ever did was running three small seperate groups on different days of the week, due to peoples class schedule, that eventually lead all of them to meet in Tilverton to find stuff out that they eventually figured out was all interconnected and that it owuld be mutually beneficial to all join up. Was a real shocker on that day when the group went for 2 to 4 people to 9 total. Each group thought the other new people where new players to the campaign until they all got together and started comparing notes and adventure hooks.

the classic 'a wizard, a rogue, and a ranger walk into a tavern...' is nice cause it allows them to roleplay their first meeting, which i like.

The party that I am currently DMing started in Murran Amn as a group of convicts working on a chain-gang when the city was attacked by the Ogre Mage army. The party had no real resources and had to work together in order to survive. The players did not like the fact that they started pretty much naked but they did like the originality.

I once started a party by havng a rather powerful NpC post ads about Silverymoon asking for brave, rash fellows handy either with spells or blades , Harpers need not apply. The players were forced to go through an interview process and then lumped into an adventuring party with complete strangers. The resulting group ended up calling themselves the Bold and Daring and reached 16th level together before moving off to attend to their own individual goals.
