| SJE05-22-04, 11:29 PM | Vaguely considering doing some more Green Regent at cons, and I wondered about getting the Players Guide to Faerun. Is this book any good? How does it compare to the FRCS? Any problems with it? Many thanks, SJE |

My players and I love it for all the new options it gives you; compared to it, the FRCS offered very little to players. For example, regional feats have been revised; you can choose one at 1st level, can't get them w/knowledge:local, and they've been made alot better. All in all, it really improves things for players. |

I agree with the Dagda Mor (or is it just Dagda Mor? :)) that it straightens some things out that were unclear before, and gives some cool options for players. It also updates the FR to 3.5, so I say yes to the first question. It's purpose is not the same as the FRCS, so it's hard to compare that way. It's more of a rulebook (crunch) than a guide to the world (history, culture, etc.), so IMO you really need both to run a 3.5 campaign. That is, unless you do your own thing and take the time to "translate" a lot of older material to the 3.5 rules, which IMO is not a bad thing either, if you have that kind of time and energy. To the third question, it does have its problems, too. As much as I love the way the regional feats are done, and appreciate the book's integration with so many other products (they put in sections dealing with psionics, as well as vile and exalted stuff), the editing is not quite as good as you'd expect from a Wizards product, so a higher-than-usual number of errors made it through. I definitely still recommend the book, but it's probably a good idea to do a search of the boards to find the threads that talk about those errors. Check out this thread in particular: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=129535 --Rich Baker and other developers have taken time to answer a lot of questions, including some about the PGtF. Hope this helps! |
