So, picked up the Player's Guide to Faerun on Friday. Some tweaks here and there, but Innate Spell go a huge boost.

If you meet the preq's (two specific metamagic feats, same as 3.0 I believe) you pick any spell - permanently give up a slot of the same level and can cast it 3x day.

Magic Missile 3x day? Drop one 1st level slot.
Fireball 3x day? Drop one 3rd level slot.

Now, I always thought Innate Spell was entirely not worth it, but is this not going waaaaaaay to far the other way?

If it was a spell slot of the level required by applying the two feats (+2) I think it might be ok, but even then it's a pretty good feat.

I don't think it's too bad. Seems actually takeable now. You can only do it with the ONE spell you take the feat on... 2 extra casts of the spell per day in exchange for a feat and the loss of the ability to prepare other spells in that slot seems like a very nice fair trade to me.

This feat still won't go on the must-have list. And remember, you can't metamagic the spell you make innate, which means if you take innate spell at a relatively low level, when you get higher it will be pretty much a rather wasted feat.

The feat has turned out nice, but I think a lot of spellcasters wait ītill they reach Archmage status, then go with the "spell-like ability" feature - which does allow metamagicked spells :b:

Hmmm...maybe I'm jumping the gun on this one. However, would there be anything preventing someone for giving up a slot with metamagic built in?

5th level wizard putting an Empowered Magic Missile in a 3rd level slot. By 9th level he'd be doing 5d4+5 x. 1.5, force damage, 3x per day, at the cost of a 3rd level slot.

Do you think anything in the new wording of the feat prevents this, or is it just a DM's call?

Actually they dropped the Quicken Spell requirement.

Its still not very good, but its no longer a boneheaded choice.

And I dont see anything that would prevent doing a MM spell, provided you have the MM feat because you have to be able to cast the spell
