I have a town based roughly off of "Deadwood" that boasts an 8000 strong population and a prosperous silver mine. Though nominally part of a nation, its largely on its own. I was thinking of placing in Thar, Impiltur or the Ride. Any suggestions?

Depends how you want the town to come off. Cultural theme such as dress, custum, and food all come into play. But we're looking generic. Lots of valuable ores come from the Moonsea (which I'm always ready to play in). Mining ops. tend to remind me of Damara. Look at the trade map in the FRCS and see where silver comes from.

Toss it in the Pirate Isles off the Sword Coast, you can throw a lawless-ness feel to the city, and have access to anywhere on the sword coast with a ship.

Yes, I'm looking for a largely lawless area. The idea is there was a "silver rush" that helped form the town, and the region's king/baron/plar/whatever has stationed just a small garrison there. The town is controlled by the mine owners, and there is a huge disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

You could also place it in an area that isn't controlled by a large nation. There's just massive swaths of land in FR that aren't controlled by anyone.

is there any mining down in the Border Kingdoms?

Yep, I forget what exactly but there are at least some gem mines and likely to be some metals as well.

I'd check out the web articles on the boarder kingdoms for specifics. If you have Powers of Faerun then you should check out the write up in that about the boarder kingdoms.

that would fit the bill then

I would use the village of Dead Snows from the Silver Marches book.

Do you want a complete lack of government? Or maybe a little, that city might have too much, but it has lost control because of the 'gold rush'.

There are 5 mini-adventures written into that book.

8,000 people is also way bigger than the HBO Deadwood (what a great show by the by)

Realistically you could place it almost anywhere as stated by others. I would not place it in the Ride however - such a place would be scooped up by the Zhents so quickly that it would never have a chance at teh lawlessness feel you want there. Thar (Glister is already there and you could use it with a littel adaptation) would be good. Vaasa and damara would work. ANother good place would actually be the Stonelands along Cormyr's northern border. Given the Cormytes weakness right now they could well be claiming it but not have the real troop strength to control it. Sembian merchants, cormyrian merchants, Zhents, Thayans, HUmanoids could easily all be mixing together with little or no real law except the sword/wand at your side (and public opinion at yoru back). While the border kingdoms might work my take on them is that they are really almost too small - also no really good geology for silver deposits there either. An interesting place might be near teh headwaters of the Thornwash or River Mina in easternmost Tethyr. at the edge of the CLoven Mountains on one side of teh THorn wood or the other.
Another great place would be the westrn end of the Orsruan Mtns south of the Dragon Coast. No real countries there, great geology and lots of possibilites nearby for manipulation and intrigue.

"Clobberin'Time" mentioned Deadsnows (Silver Marches) which is realistically your best bet. it's a new "boomtown" where the emphasis is on mining and quite similar to theme/mood you want.

alot of ppl flee to the North as it's kinda' like anything west of the Mississipee. land is plentiful, if not rugged, many many walks of life and races live there (though not all peacefully), etc. there are many zhentarim expatriates that immigrated here as well. i'm sure a few are spies or still posses their pevious nationalisitc "moral compass".

technically, the Marches are still in many ways The Savage Frontier and apart from Silverymoon, Everlund, Sundabar, and any dwarven citadel (very lawful), the area is still relatively ungoverned and a bit wild. note Uthgardt barbarians; some falling into line worshipping regular deities and trading, others still routinely raid regular merchants, shipping. in many ways alot like indians on/near old western towns if that's not too big a leap. many chances for clerics to do missionary work/prosyletize like we did w/ the indians. plenty of rogues and sellswords doing coster work (prot. caravans ala "wells fargo") and the like.

it's a very good mirror to what you want.
