Hey guys,

I am having an Planar Army invade the Forgotten Realms. I was thinking on making the Warlord of this Army a 36th character.

Fighter 6 / Barbarian 10 / Frenzied Berserker 10 / Legendary Juggernaut 10

The invasion itself would start in Waterdeep.

What kind of Numbers do you think I would need to successfully complete the invasion.

By numbers I mean men, mages, and the like.

My group is Epic so that is why I am coming up with this kind of scenario.

I was thinking about 100k-200k man army with alot of Sorcerers and Clerics.

I want this guy to be a Planar Conquror, kinda like Alexander or Ghengis Khan.

You guys got any idea's?

How about a million? Just to make it clear there's no messing with this conquerer. And everyone in the army is elite, i.e. no NPC classes or nuthing.

Seeing as I don't own the Waterdeep sourcebook at the moment I can't name their defenses. But I would most likely go with an army around 5K-7K mark, considering that Waterdeep may or may not be able to field an army of that size but they do have many allies they can call upon to help, and 100k-200k is just so huge it's not funny, I think thats more than most of what the entire of Faerun could field.

Considering the two closest cities to Waterdeep, in my memory, are Baldur's Gate (roughly 2000 Flaming Fist at any time) and Neverwinter (Unknown) Waterdeep would be able to call on those cities for aid, and while they do have the Khelben and Lareal(Can't spell it) they can only do so much. But as I said I don't know much about Waterdeep at the moment.

While having a large army is an advantage strategy also comes into play, if you really want to go for a high powered army I wouldn't make it larger 9K and with an army of that size I think you'd attract an awful lot of attention from other cites. Also, how would he/she field such a large army if your set on the 100/200k mark?

This is similar to the Army of Darkness vs. Waterdeep thread that we brought up.

Even 200,000 might not be enough.

taking waterdeep would proably be impossiable. it's just got too many powerful individuals watching over it. I mean if you invaded waterdeep you'd HAVE to deal with Khelbhan and Laural Arunsan, maybe even Halastar too..

and god knows how many other high level chars..

Waterdeep can be taken as long as the DM is objective and keeps Gods out of the equation. The real problem you are going to have with an invasion like yours is that your general is a joke. An epic level character who does not have spellcasting abilities is a victim waiting to happen. Any of the epic level wizards in Waterdeep will scry-and-die you in a second. Your BBEG better be a cleric or a wizard or he will be dead, quick.

And don't forget the draconic population thats living in and around Waterdeep. An army of 5k-7k won't be anything more then lunch.

Little question before further consideration: Are we talking about 2.x planargrophy or 3.x's "Great Tree"?

You may want to consider looking at Dragon Magazine #309, it deals with a githyanki invasion of the Material Plane. It even has suggestions for running such a campaign in the Realms. If you decide to follow-up on this idea, then you may also want to pick-up Dungeon Magazine #100 (...it has a corresponding high-level adventure involving the githyanki Lich Queen). And the associated Polyhedron (on the flip-side of the Dungeon magazine) has great material on the githyanki.

Dragon Magazine #309 (http://paizo.com/dragon/products/issues/2003/v5748btpy733u)

Dungeon Magazine #100 (& Polyhedron #159) (http://paizo.com/dungeon/products/issues/2003/v5748btpy72u2)

Good gaming.

Definitely check out the aforementioned Dragons. But to rebuff attacks and attemps at intelegence gathering give him a second-in-command: Diviner 25/Archmage 5. Probably a couple of other side-kicks (i.e. a rogue/epic infiltrator).

What is the race of this invasion? I hope they are not humans. I am hoping you pick something more exotic.

Slaad armies on their way to the blood war attacked the wrong side more than once, because they forgot who they were supposed to attack (or stumbled upon the allied demon army first and were to lazy to search for the devils) :D
