Hey all. This is one of my first posts here on these boards. I'm looking for some great roleplay advice but am not sure how to go about it.

Anyways, here's my problem. My 18th level (3 fighter, 5 rogue, 10 assassin) character travelled with his party from the greyhawk material plane to the Faerun material plane on a quest to save the planes from destruction. We ended up entering the nearest city/town, Waterdeep, and my DM, a hard-A**, makes or breaks us with the creativity and skill we use to roleplay tough situations, especially on evil characters.

Anyways (again), as a player I found out about the deity 'Mask', and became intrigued in him after reading about the shadow walker template. The problem is, I have no idea how, as a rogue/assassin, to approach a new world's thieve's guild or organization, or the city's local thieves, and find out about local situations and what's up in this world enough to hopefully uncover a cleric of 'Mask' or something to that extent.. or maybe something along hte lines of that.

My disguise is +18, I can dim door with my assassin levels and have 'sudden still spell' and 'sudden silent spell' to cast any spell without anyone except someone detecting magic to find out. I can also alter self to add +10 to my disguise too, if that helps.

Anyone have any idea how I can get over this roleplay hump? My half-vampire template friend in the game dominated a brothel and got a cleric mad himself and aquired the same template I wanted before he even read about Mask or the template at all, without so much as trying as I have.

Any advice or detailed help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance. =/

One thing to do is to either get thrown in jail or wait for people being released from jail. There are probably priests of Mask getting arrested and let free.

2, Work for the good guys busting thieves, then interrogate them and do a double cross.

3, Disguise yourself as a drunk rich merchant stumbling home many many nights and wait to get robbed, turn the tables on the robbers and find out about mask that way.

This is absolutely amazing roleplay. I don't know how to thank you. For one reason or another I expected a flame or a 'that's metagaming, topic ended'.. but this, really is brilliant. :D

How can I fit this into a character who's never heard of Mask and is new to the Forgotten Realm's material plane and waterdeep? Hmm. I can probably do either of those and find out one way or another.

Sounds like a plan.

Sounds pretty easy, if you don't know anything about Faerün yourself.

Also, if Mask has a keen interest on you, it's more likely he might find you first! He has roguish eyes and ears everywhere and if you happen to ask the right questions from the barkeep... :)

If you are playing a thief and having a hard time roleplaying it read the Artemis Enteri books in the Paths of Darkness series, all I did was try to think of what he would do. Personally I like the jail one best, give your good stuff to one of your buddies to hold, make sure your crime only sends you up the river for a week or so, and get some props from the underworld.

It's funny, that's exactly what I did the first game with the innkeeper/barkeep. He said the pier or port or something like that. ;) I might just roll myself a gather information and go in disguise and buy some drinks around the city and have some small talk and mention i'm new in town and then ask very casually (and try to bring up slight curiousity for more information) what places I might want to avoid, and then show intrigue for the altitude of structure they bring up when I do ask. "Everyone there is bought or looks the other way in that area? That's awful! What kind of organized ruffians might have such strong hold like that?!" Eventually I might hit up someone who actually knows. This could make for an interesting night of drinking.

As for the jail one, my character got thrown into a cell for three days already for possible murder of a young gal at the inn. And since it was a party member's evil cursed weapon which made him do it, I was let off scott free without so much as being told why I was kept there while my friend was let off with a warning since supposedly it wasn't his fault.

I can make my way back or even Dim door anywhere I remember in the jail, but really, they usually don't seem, if I remember the way the DM played it, to let you out of your cell much or let you near the other inmates. But I will say I like the idea of watching who comes in and out for a few days. I might catch someone I like to meet in that time.. then follow this person and just maybe be able to go ahead of them and show as a drunken equipt citizen on his way home from drinking. :D

Ooohh, this is getting interesting already. How might I get the party to want to stay here longer. Hopefully our leader (I'd be a fool not to consider the half-vampire shadow dancer lyre player in the party any less) can convince the rest somehow that this might be a good idea. If not, in a few days I might get some done.

So you have 5 levels of rogue and I take it that at least some ranks of sleight of hand. So you go for some easy targets, nothing expensive just some copper and silver. Do that a few times and I guarantee that the Thieves Guild will come to you. Or failing that you'll get caught my the militia and jailed for a couple of days. Either one's a winner.
