Players Guide to Faerun: less versions [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am new to this board and had a question about the new players guide to faerun. In the appendix on pages 190 and 191 it has two different version of how to allow races with LA higher than 0 to be level 1 starting characters and still have an ECL of 1. The second option which allows you to make lesser versions of races does not seem to make any sense. For example the Lesser Planetouched says.

" All lesser planetouched have the following racial trait in common, in addition to all the racial traits detailed elsewhere in this book. "

"PlaneTouched: Planetouched are Humaniods (not outsiders) with the planetouched subtype. They are susceptible to spells and effects that specifically target both humanoids or outsiders. Charm Person works against them, so does banishment. This trait replaces the outsider entry in eached planetouched description."

So here are my questions. Is that the only thing you need to do too turn a planetouched into a LA +0 or does this only drop their LA by one point? If this is the only thing you need to do does it work on all planetouched regardless of LA (ei both a Planetouched, Genasi Fire LA +1 and a Planetouched, Feyri LA +3)

Thanks,
Thanatos52002

P.S. This is my first post so sorry in advance for any mistakes I made.

I havent got PGTF yet, but the alternate rules your talking about are they the same as the articles Sean Reynold has written for the WOTC ie you take "Racial levels" of Drow instead of starting as an ECL 2 Drow character?

yeah i think it's pretty stupid... you really should just shouldn't be allowed to play ecl +1 characters end of story..

No here is a like to the previews section that talks about it.

I don't have the book yet either but it sounds to me like this lesser version may only be applied to Aasimars, Tieflings and Genasi. In other words those planetouched that are already earmarked to be used as PC classes, which doesn't include Tanarukks or Fey'ri. That'd be my guess, of course I won't know for sure until I get the book and read it for myself.

I thought all of the planetouched were earmarked to be player classes. Why else would the Races of Faerun have players stats for all of them including Fey'ri and Tanarukks?

There is using a race for for a PC and there is using a race for PC. Kuo-Toas, Grimlocks, Gloamings, Shades, Tanarukks and Mindflayers all have ECL, but I don't know if I'd lett my players use them. Aasimars and Teiflings on the other hand I don't think twice about letting my players use.

Right, just slap some bondo and some paint on a core race with some fancy stickers just like in the old 2nd Ed days.

I think the fact that they failed to mention whether this applies to Fey'ri, Tanarukks, and the like is a simple oversight. It seems pretty clear that they only intended for regular aasimar, tieflings, and genasi to be reduced to LA +0 in this way. If you did want to lower the LA of a Fey'ri or Tanarukk, however, changing them from outsiders to humanoids might be a good way to start.

Feyri are more powerful than elven tieflings. They have a lot of spell-like abilities plus wings that allow flight. I'd say that they are closer to a half-fiend than a tiefling. The description of lesser planetouched races is just for the ECL +1 races.

Why be so radical, my dear city-mate?

If you tell your players that the campaign is intended for players with an ECL of 5 (for example), I would not mind if I end up DMing a group made up of:

1) Human ranger level 5 (ECL = 5)
2) Aasimar paladin level 4 (ECL = 5)
3) Chitine Rogue level 1 (ECL = 5)
4) Dragonkin Earth Genasi Fighter level 3 (ECL = 5)

Although the player choosing the Chitine would have to come up with a very good story to justify how his character manages to live on the surface and get along with looking like it does... but that's another story! :)

That's the whole point of ECL modifiers: you can play any races, but in order to level the playing field you get provided with a tool that helps you keep all the characters on the same level of power...

If the campaign was starting on level 1, though, I would probably not allow races with an ECL. I'd go for the solution proposed on Wizard's website to have the "ECLed" races broken down into bits to be gained via accumulation of XPs.

What do you think?

They are still just elven tieflings. :)

FR's Monster Manual: "Fer'ri are tieflings descended from elves and demons."

Besides they can't be half demons because some of thier ancestors were half demons. And so they are elven tieflings.

Well, the fey'ri are more "pure" then your run of the mill tiefling. They get a -2 con for the inbreeding that has been done during there existence. So it's more along the lines of Half Fiend, breeds with Half fiends, there decendence breed with another half fiend and so on. In the end you get a Fey'ri, a more pure form of Fiend/elf then the half fiend, but more fiend then a teifling.

OK, maybe I pulled it a bit too far on that one... But you know what I mean :)

Actually, I did not mean "Dragonkin" but "Draconic creature" (I did not have my Draconomicon handy).

It is a template applicable to all material creatures who are descending far away from dragons. A kind of watered-down half-dragon with an ECL modifier of +1.

So my idea was that of a typical Earth-Genasi (of "human blood", as you say) with some far away draconic ancestors.

They are still only elven tieflings, that just breed true among themselves. They are not half-demons. Sigh.

Again Monster's of Faerun says: Fey'ri (Tiefling). Planed touched, Tiefling, Fey'ri. Fey'ri are tieflings descended from elvens and demons.

Lord of Darkness says they are elven tieflings: "Fey'ri (tieflings descended from elf-demon crossbreeds.)"

Races says: "They are the descendents of sun elves and demons."

That right there makes them elven tieflings. Since normal tieflings are the descendents of humans and lower planar creatures.

If you want them to be half-demons or more demonish, then do so, but they are not, they are elven tieflings.

Races says: Fey'ri are a type of planetouched that breeds true among their own kind. Marked by the findish blood, fey'ri are unique among most planetouched in that they have a self-suistaining community.

Teiflings on the other hand: Tieflings are the distant decendants of a human and some evil outsider.
-and-
Fiend-touched and similary tainted mixes of elves, orcs and other races are known, but those are distinct lines and are not true tieflings.

Better check your sources again. Yes they breed true but again they are elven tieflings. Can't believe you don't believe this.

Races again says: Fey'ri ARE DESCENDENTS OF SUN ELVES AND DEMONS!. Page 118, 2nd paragraph on the top right.

So combine that was the other 3e sources and it says for the last time, I hope!, that Fey'ri are elven tieflings.

Normal tieflings are the descendents of humans and a lower planar being. Fey'ri (elven tieflings) are the descendents of elves and lower planar beings, I.E. demons.

Why is this so hard to understand?

That's great and all, and what page is that on? But they are still elven tieflings, since there are at least two other sources that back that up. Of course that are not the tieflings that are descended from human's and lower planar creatures.

To clarify the point that this thread was about, before the debate on the difference between Fey'ri and Elven teiflings began, the book does specify that the Lesser Planetouched share the one adjusted trait, along with all the previous listed racial traits "detailed elsewhere in this book."

Since no Tannaruk's or Fey'ri aren't detailed in the Player's Guide, it doesn't apply. No misprint, or oversight just the mess we like to call the English language and it's inherint grammar.

Fey'ri are just a specialized true breeding race of elven tieflings derived from the original Tanar'ri / Gold Elf breedings. 3e only has your normal run of the mill standard human derived tieflings, however that's not the only kind you had in previous editions.

Take a look at the 2e Planescape 'Planewalker's Handbook' and the tables it had for alternate tiefling abilities and abilities based upon specific original sires of their bloodline. Ie. Vrock, Glabrezu, Amnizu, Pit Fiend, Arcanaloth (surprisingly randy fellows them), and Ultroloths.

I'd use that as a guide to the production of varient tieflings for 3e. Most tiefling/planetouched races are by default human, but other races can have similar watered down planar blood in them, such as the Fey'ri. And all tiefling lines need not be all watered down at the same level. Some might have a higher amount of fiendish blood still pumping through their veins, and thus corresponding to more than the normal +1 ecl for tiefers.

"And if anyone asks, no I'm not the grandmother of Kylie the Tout in Sigil, regardless of what anyone says... "

Page 125, under Tiefling.

Do you even know what tieflings are? They are descendents of lower planar creatures and humans.

So are half fiends, but they are not teiflings. Teifling has a long lost grandparent that had fiendish blood. Every generation of Fey'ri has fiendish blood, this is what makes them distinct from teiflings.

So then since Fey'ri are decendents of elves and lower planar creatures, they are then elven tieflings and there are at least two other books that backs this up.

Again, Half fiends are also decendents of fiends and another race, but that does not make them teiflings. Like I said before: "Tieflings are the distant decendants of a human and some evil outsider." -Page 125 Races of Faerun
Any other race that has a mix of feind blood in them is a distinct race, and not Tieflings.
Ergo: "Fiend-touched and similary tainted mixes of elves, orcs and other races are known, but those are distinct lines and are not true tieflings."

Just like the tannark's are orc tieflings and the other tieflings that are in Fiend Folio. Maeluths are dwarven tieflings. Wisplings are halfling tieflings.

No, only Humans and half fiend blood, mixed several generations ago are teiflings. Fey'ri are Fey'ri, Maeluth are Maeluths, Tannark's are Tannark's. They are all planetouched, yes, but only the humans can be tieflings.

No actually half-fiends are not descendents, they are the next generation offspring. Tieflings are then the descendent of that half-fiend and another human.

So since normal tieflings are descendents of humans and the offspring of lower planar creatures. A Fey'ri is an elven tiefling. It is the descendent of a elf and the offspring of a lower planar creature.

And no you are wrong that only humans can be tieflings, since 3e has introduced us to more tieflings. There is the normal tiefling, there is the elven tiefling, there is the halfling tiefling, and there is the dwarven tiefling.

Monsters of Faerun, Page 73, "This entry describes two varient TIEFLINGS, descended not from human stock, but from elf and orc ancestors."

Lords of Darkness page 126, "The daemonfey collectively comprise a clan of evil, magically talented half-fiends and fey'ri(tieflings descended from elf-demon crossbreeds)....."

Sorry Cunning, you are wrong on this.

I'm not talking about the normal human tiefling either. I'm talking about the elven tiefling, which is a Fey'ri. Since it says so in Monster's of Faerun, as well as Lords of Darkness, and as well as in Races since they are descendents of elves and demons.

In Lords of Darkness is says the Fey'ri are breeding elves directly with demons to produce half-fiends. Not more fey'ri.

There are two definitions of tiefling at work here.

One is the specific example of tieflings written up for player characters to play with a +1 ECL and it's own modifiers.

The other is the term tiefling to mean any creature of mixed heritage, descended from a lower-planar being.

If using the second definition, tanarukka and fey'ri are definitely examples of tieflings.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, it is like arguing that orogs are not orcs. While it is true that they are different from the write up of orcs within the monster manual, they still fall into the broad category of orc.

So too, do fey'ri differ from the write up of tieflings in Races of Faerun, but also fit under the broad category of tiefling.

That's a good summation of the argument here, I like.

We're rapidly getting into an argument over semantics here, though hopefully we don't delve into a Clintonian debate along those lines, ie "...could you please define the word 'is'."

I guess it's all a vocabulary thing. Maybe we do not need to make so many comparisons and try to equate things together. Let's say that Tieflings and Feyri are two different things in their own
right, as are Half-demons.

1st point:

The "Races of Faerun" book actually says that this Elven House of Sun Elves breeding with Demons originally created Half-Demon Elves (i.e. sun elves with the Half-Demon template). That is still what the eldest members of the family are and the two leaders of the House are not Feyris, they are Sun Elves with the Half-Demon template (e.g. check the Lords of Darkness book entry for the Feyris).

2nd point:

The "Races of Faerun" also says that, as the Feyris were cut from the world and forced to live in autarcy, there was a lot of consanguinity and then, after generations, these pure Sun
Elves/Half-Demons breeding together created what we now know as the Feyris.

That is no matter of opinion, that's from the books (I don't have them here, but if that is SO important for you I could check tomorrow for the exact pages - not tonight because tonight is
D&D night and I am DMing!).

Now, here is my opinion:

Feyri and not Elves with the Half-Fiend template, nor are they Tiefling: they are Feyris, that is something in its own right.

You could say that there are some similarities between Tieflings and Feyris because in both cases these are mixes between traditional races (i.e. humans or elves) with evil outsiders.

Or, said otherwise, they are watered down versions of a pure half-demon (lesser Half-demons if you wish).

We could even say that Feyris are closer to a typical Half-demon (hence their increased power compared to a Tiefling and also their higher ECL modifier), but they still are no Half-demon, they
are something else.

So, there are no longer just human descended tieflings, as I said. There are elven, dwarven, halfling, human, and orc tieflings now. Unlike in 2e when there was just a human descended tieflings.

When a half-demon mates with an elf it makes an elven tiefling, aka the Fey'ri

When a half-demon mates with an human it makes an human tiefling aka the normal tiefling.

I don't think Richard understood your question.. If you see what he said.

"Yes. they are planetouched," In the way that all planetouched are teiflings. If that is the definision, Half Fiends are also teiflings, and we both agree that they are not.

Races of Faerun says that only Humans with some old fiendish blood are teiflings. If you wish to disreguard this, you may, but it makes it no less true.

How could he not understand "Are fey'ri, elven tieflings?" His answer is yes.....

Sorry no it doesn't. They are still elven tieflings. You are the one who is ignoring this. You are the one who is saying it isn't true, when Fey'ri are elven tieflings, since Monsters of Faerun, as well as Lords of Darkness, as well as Races of Faerun says as much.

The tieflings in the tiefling section are descended from humans. The fey'ri are tieflings descended from elves. Wisplings are tieflings descended from halflings, etc.

Do you agree that human tieflings are descendents of the offspring of humans and half-lower planar creatures?

If so, then how can you not agree that Fey'ri are not elven tieflings since they are offspring of elves and half-lower planar creatures.

As well as there are two other sourcebooks that calls them variant tieflings!!!! Notice this line it says VARIANT tieflings. Yes the human descended tieflings are the only "true" tieflings. But there also exists demihuman tieflings.

We know they are not half-fiends, i'll give you that since Races says: "If one of these half-blooded creatures has an offspring with a humanoid (notice it says humanoid now!), the result is usually a planetouched creature).

So that right there says that humans are no longer just the only race that can make tieflings. As I said 3e changed the rules and now all humanoid races can make tieflings, I.E: Fey'ri, wisplings, tannaruak, etc.

Again the pitching of the words.

The one thing a Fey'ri, a teifling, a Wispling and all other races that have some fiend far back in there generation line is that they are all planetouched, but only humans can be teiflings.

How could Mr. baker interpret your question wrong? Let's see:

Are fey'ri, elven tieflings? = Are fay'ri decedents from demons like the tiefling? Yes they are.

Are fey'ri, elven tieflings? = Are fey'ri planetouched, like the humans tiefling. Yes they are (I think this was how he read it, since he said: "Yes, they are planetouched")

Asking a question with 3 words can often make a person think you are asking him something else. A better question would be:

"Mr. Baker, we are talking on another post, and some say that Fey'ri are not the elven teifling, and that they are a own unique race, and should not be put ut against the human version of fiendish planetouched race, teifling. Other say that Teifling are the standard way of talking about any humanoid that has fiendish blood somewhere in there heritage. What do you think is the correct statement?"

No Cunning, humans are not the only ones who can be tieflings since Monsters of Faerun lists Fey'ri and Tannaurk's as variant tieflings, as does Lords of Darkness.

A tiefling, be they human or demihuman, is some thing that has lower planar blood somewhere in it's family tree and are also descended from a half-lower planar being.

No what it says is that they are not true human descended tieflings. Which is true, since the demihuman tieflings are elven descended tieflings, or dwarven descended tieflings, or halfling descended tieflings.

Yes again there are the true human tieflings, which are called tieflings. But there are also elven tieflings calld Fey'ri, etc.

Oh Cunning. :) Sorry this proves that they are elven and orc tieflings, just like it was originally in Monster's of Faerun and Lords of Darkness.

Straight from the Monsters of Faerun update that was supposed to be in the Player's Guide, and this is newer then Races of Faerun. :)

Planetouched, Tiefling, Fey’ri: Outsider (native); +1/+1; 5 ft./5 ft.;
10/magic; Bluff +3, Hide +4, Listen +2, Move Silently +2, Search +3,
Spot +2; Stealthy; LA +2 or +3. Abilities change to Str 13, Dex 13,
Con 10, Int 12, Wis 9, Cha 8. Hit Dice change to 1d8 (4 hp); initiative
changes to +1; attacks change to longsword +2 melee (1d8+1);
saves change to Fort +2, Ref +1, Will –1; elf blood (as half-elves);
replace alternate form with change shape (any humanoid form) in
special qualities (see Monster Manualglossary).
The fey’ri presented here is a 1st-level warrior. It had the following
ability scores before racial adjustments: Str 13, Dex 11, Con 12,
Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 8.
A fey’ri can only have one of the following three abilities: damage
reduction, dimension door, or enervation.

Planetouched, Tiefling, Tanarukk: Outsider (native); +5/+7; 5 ft./5
ft.; Climb +10, Hide +9, Intimidate +6, Jump +4, Listen +9, Move
Silently +9, Search +8, Spot +9; Alertness, Weapon Focus (battleaxe);
LA +3. Attacks change to battleaxe +8 melee (1d8+3) and bite +2
melee (1d6+1); add fire resistance 10 to special qualities; spell resistance
equals 14 + class levels; orc blood (as half-orcs).

You know, sooner or later folks may realize that when Shemmy has spoken the time for discussion is ended. It's sort of like a correlary for Godwins Law on discussions of planar material. When Shemmy has spoken, thats it, end of argument, for Shemmy is always right.

Except for when I'm wrong. But when I'm wrong, I'm not speaking as Shemmy. Sort of a Yugoloth equivalent of the Catholic doctrine of 'the pope is infalible except when not speaking as the pope.'

*sly, fanged grin*

(Take this all as a joke, mostly, :D )

On his site, Sean K Reynolds created an elf/eladrin crossbreed called the eladree. 'Tis, I believe, not at all official, but here is the link:

I said before that I couldn't recall any upper elven planar offspring like the Fey'ri being lower elven planar offspring. :)

Planetouched, Tiefling, Fey’ri: Outsider (native);

Ok, if the players guide says teifling is a subtype of the planetouched, that clearly outweights Races of Faerun, and I was wrong.

:bounce: :fight!:

Good debate though, but as I said originally. Fey'ri are basicially elven tieflings. :) And there are the sourcebooks to back this up. :)

OK, now the next question:

What is a Wispling and where does this come from (i.e. which book?)?

The dwarven (Maeluth's) and halfling (Wispling) tieflings are in Fiend Folio. :)
