As most of you have heard Wizards are working on a Players guide to the FR for release next year and while its main purpose will be in intergrating the new 3.5 rules along with BOVD, MOTP and Psionics handbooks, there might be some room for some new stuff

Here are my suggestions

1) "Tiefling/Aasamir" stats for other races ie Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings Half Orcs etc

2) Stats for chosen already revealed, for example a Chosen of Talona template is need for "Rotting Man"

3) I also would like to see a new Assassin PrC whose abilities are closer to the old 1ed Assassin Class or 2ed kit, ie NO SPELLS. For realms flavour the Prc could be tied to a group, my suggestion would be for the Monks of the Long Death.

Feel free to post your own suggestions!

--Wishlist--

(a) Stats and a brief history on Alaundo the Seer.

(b) Some kinda usable 3 Ed. Fighter Kit translated from the BG2 Wizard Slayer Class.

(c) Guidelines for creating a Siege Campaign.
For Example: An epic level barbarian and his barbarian horde come to make war on an epic level paladin and his knights. Guidlines for determining number/type of followers for each, stats for siege machines and strongholds for both sides.

Those are some excellent wants Dargoth. That got me thinking, it would be really nice to see a better Assassin class whether its core or prestige.

The timeline needs furthering and i really hope to see that happen.

The new book should clarify all this bickering about epic magic and epic levels etc. That MUST happen.

More magic and items and treasures specific to the Realms. Perhaps that is a bit of a wish for a players book well the items and treasures but spells damn well better be in the thing.

Corrected NPC's properly done up so as to not insult our *the fans and fanatics* INT scores.

1) How about just a Base Chosen Template, not one for every Deity. If you look hard enough most of the Deities have PrC's already. Their Chosen should really just be a more powerful version of that PrC, thus a Base Template for the Chosen.

2) How are the NPC's insults to our intelligence? I for one don't think every NPC in a novel has to be some Uber Munchkin build, like Elminster & Drizzt fans think they are.

3) No more whining about non human based Planetouched. Ok the entire Planetouched concept Pcomes from the Planescape setting, and out in the planes it was Humans who bred with everthing under the sun (or no sun for the many of the planes). I don't see people crying out for a 1/2 elf-1/2 orc? Gnomlings anyone? Or how about Winged-Dwarves?

4) the Assassin should not be a core class. Without it's special abilities (spells being one of them), assassin would only be a descriptive name for a fighter or rogue or wizard or any other class (except the Paladin) who kills for profit.

...Now Psionics is a good idea for inclusion in the FRCS. Duergar, Derro, Mind Flayers, Aboleth, Yuan-ti... psionics already exists in Faerun.

I wish they adopt a similar format to the old Volo's guides or Elminster's Ecologies. A book where a DM can lend the book to his players and not fear to spoil any campaign information.

An interresting format would be Volo (with El's corrections) giving a general overview from without or from an outsider's point of view on the region, and then a series of correspondance "IC" from various bards, sages or other individuals of expertise from the region proper giving their take on the area. With additional comments on social customs, dress, etc.

The book would also include all the crunchy for the powergamers, and the in character correspondance as well as society information would provide the fluff for the DM, and the roleplayers.

I dont have any issues with levels etc, just like them to be accurate in terms of basically what we already know. I think Silver Marches wa the worse for NPC's with some serious issues with Bruenor and Wulfgar's histories etc. Id just like some solid editing and research done. im not crying for a 29th level drizzt and 54th level El. heh.

The Volo's guide idea sounds if I may say : f * * k i n g cool!!!!

ROF clearly states

there are Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and halfling "aasimar"

There are also Shield dwarf and Rock Gnome "Earth Genasi"

Theres also "Fire Genasi" halflings

There are also "Water Genasi" Sea elves

I really don't think that a Player's Guide to the Forgotten Realms is an appropriate place for either NPC statistics or templates that would generally be considered for DM's only.

Yes, templates for the various Chosen might be cool, and in some people's games every player character is a chosen of a different god... just grand. However, I don't think this should be considered standard player material.

What should go into the book are definitely v3.5 updates for the various spells, feats, classes, prestige classes, and races (including all those presented in Races of Faerun) from existing FR products --where revisions/changes are necessary.

I also agree that more information about Planetouched of the FR setting should be made available, including non-vital stats (age, height, weight, etc) and non-human variations of the standard planetouched.

In addition, new prestige classes, feats, spells, and flavor text should be added for some regions commonly used by players that haven't (and aren't likely to anytime soon) recieve their own supplements (such as Cormyr, the Dalelands, the Sword Coast, etc).

The Maeluth (planetouched dwarf/devil) and the Wispling (planetouched halfling/demon) can be found in the Fiend Folio. This isn't everything you want, but is some of it.

I stongly agree with that.

The PGttFR should include 3.5 updates to existing races, core classes and PrC. Updates to spells, equipment, and items should also be present.

Updating of the timeline is also essential, and some updating of the deities.

If there is room, new races, PrC, and spells could be included as well.

It should also heavily touch on how general information on each region so as to give players ideas on what areas they would like to play in, as well as implied roleplaying tips. A sort of quick guide on the people and places of the area, without touching too heavily on the subject, much like the original player's guide to the Forgotten Realms.

Id actually prefer that NPCs get there own book and the Authors do there own write ups of there characters. But as the Players guide to the FR is aimed at the Players, it wouldnt be apporiate to put NPC stats in the book

I think as a Player's Guide to the Realms, I'd like to see the players get a source for more of the flavor of the Realms. In the old 2E supplements, there were sections detailing the culture and history of the covered region. Things like the dots on the foreheads in the Vilhon Reach and what it stood for, or the local Feasts and Festivals and what they celebrated. Things that the Pcs would like to know from a flavor standpoint and yet not give away the campaign that the DM is running, just add to it.

Now yeah, it would be nice to have all the races and the like in one place, so you wouldn't have to go to 3 or 4 different places to find your race and the feats you need, so maybe consilidate it in one place so that it would be the only thing a PLAYER needs outside the PHB to make and run a character in the Realms.

Other than that, I'll take anything they want to put in there.

Rules updates are a necessary evil with D&D 3.5 coming out, but I certainly hope this sourcebook actually contains some realmslore.

We've heard for a couple years now about all the wonderful things that were meant to be included in the FRCS, but were cut for size reasons. Well, this would be a perfect place to put it back in.

Not sure if someone mentioned it but:

(b) Some kinda usable 3 Ed. Fighter Kit translated from the BG2 Wizard Slayer Class.

There IS a wizard slayer prestiege class, look in Magic of Faerun I beleive. You mentioned fighter and I have always thought the level 4 spell required was kinda high...you could easily adapt this class. The problem with what you want is that to fight magic you need magic. Hence why Elmister is a wizard, he became one to destroy some.

Alternativly, a fighter would need some way to counter magic for him to be a "wizard" slayer. You could simply pick feats that are good for fighting wizards and be a normal fighter. I believe there is one, somewhere, that gives a +2 to your save vs spells of a certain school. Things like dodge would be good, improved init to get the first (and last?) strike. Maybe a magic item with some dispel charges to rip down a wizards protection.

No, flames are never good... not even with marshmallows (because microwaving is so much faster).
primemover003

06-18-03, 07:31 PM
OK, actually I really will apologize for the tone of my previous posts. Flaming is never a constructive way to deal with issues that should be debated.

That said, I feel (notice "I" statements) that mixing non-human races into the planetouched categories only create overly powerful ECL races. Now as a longtime Planescape DM, I know how to handle planetouched characters in regards to the Core races, it was part and parcel with the setting. I don't really think the planetouched are that much more powerful than a core race. A spell-like ability 1/d is nothing earth shattering. Only the Aasimar and Tielfing's Resistances truly set them apart at low levels (1-4). The Genasi could be ECL 0 races (especially earth and fire).

How to insert DBZ into the FR setting.
Ya, I hate it when people DBZ god-mode. (+5 vorpal swords at level 3?!)

PC: "Ok, Goku casts chain lightning."
DM: "You're a fighter."
PC: "I kill an orc to charge up mana."
DM: "Even if you were a mage, you're level two."
PC: Orc: OH MY GOSH! HIS POWER IS AT 123,45636456,457857!!!
DM: ...................
PC: "I FRY THE DRAGON WITH MY SUPER SAYEN POWERS!"
DM:.....................................
PC: "DIE DRAGON!"
DM: "Elimister, Szass Tam, the Chosen, and Drizzit appear."
PC: "PIKACHU! I SUMMON YOU!"
DM: "Elimister makes his save against it's unbearable cuteness. He then polymorphs you into a............"

This didn't happen with my group, but I can imagine it.

I kinda thought that the Fey'ri pictures in Races of Faerun looked a bit anime influenced. The smaller one looked like a demonic Yu-gi-oh.

WHAT?? A ROLEPLAYING SECTION!? HOW DARE WIZARDS PUT IN SUCH A PITIFUL AND USELESS SECTION!!!!!!!!!

Before you bash templates, one of my players is playing a weakened form of half-dragon. Hey, at least he's not another good aligned drow ranger who happens to be Drizzits cousin.:smirk: Anyhow, he doesn't stack templates at least.
Before you bash chosen templates, I'm considering loosely following the Baldur's Gate II storyline at some point in my game. He won't have some useless template from Dragon magizine. I can play well enough without their messed up storyline for the game. (Khalid did NOT beat Jahiera. I found her more likely to beat HIM...) Did I mention one of my players is an Avariel elf? At least he's playing something interesting.........

I agree with primemover. Let's have a base chosen template.

I'd like to see kits, but not as prestiege classes. Do we EVER have enough of those?

LOL on the point buy systems. Acctually, if you play NWN online............

Sacarsms aside, I feel too many 'rules-only' posts pop up in their boards.
Granted, having a character able to survive and **win** (the goal of all games) is nice. But it seems the background aspect is often forgotten.

:) I'm not bashing templates - they actually are a great idea, far more flexible than anything else done by TSR, ahem, Wizards before.

Saying that I play RPGs a lot would be an understatement. And when I compare how I started playing to how some younger people than I DO start, I itch.
Maybe it's the anime culture, like you mentioned, maybe it's the easy access to games like Diablo 2 and the like (which are great, heh? ;)) ... I remember opening the Menzoberrazan paper box in front of my 386SX-33 that had nothing to do with thoughts like 'how much damage will I make' and 'I'll OwneZZZ them all in PvP'.
Now what happens? You buy your game on amazon, wait till it arrives via FedEx, tear out the CD(s), install the thing and connect to get as many levels as possible in the quickest way.
Yeah, I believe PvPing has kind of 'poisoned' the way RPGs are played (at least some of them). It's as if having the best character was the only goal, even at the cost of **fun**. Talk about NWN online ...

Oh well, I feel old

So a player's Guide to the Forgotten Realms? Yeah, I'd love to :) But I personaly do not need any Chosen template or more **rules*. What I yearn for is background, background, background, background. Oh yeah, and pour in a little more background, please. Prestige classes are nice when they are justified, background-wise. Templates are nice when they are justified, background-wise. Apart from some of the illustrations in the Races of Faerun supplement, I think the raw data in it was great.

My 2 € cents :)

I would like to see famous Wizards from different area's of the Realms and unique spells they have created.
I always liked the spellbooks with histories from Dragon a long time ago and far far away, before FRCS was even published as a campaign setting. I would read those stories and try to draw maps from Greenwoods commentary.

Just to remind everyone the CONFIRMED material in the Players Guide...

Reprint/update of Chapter 1-2 of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.
Integration of Manual of the Planes.
Integration of Epic Level Handbook.

If we're gonna see another rehash of NPC stats, I'd like to see them as a web enhancement to this product to be honest.

Hi

Unfortunatly the book is labelled a Players Guide. Which to me translates to information a Player needs to get involved in a Forgotten Realms game.

Background and the such is provided by the DM, who decides what happens and where. I love background, I love setting. Unfortunatly a Players Guide is not the place for such things, a Players Guide is for rules that a Player needs to be familiar with play.

I think regardless of a "wish list" and dont get me wrong I want to see flavour too, we will get rules that are required to bring everything up to date...

Sorry to sound all downtrodden about all this, simply my opinion.

Moon Elven -- the information you need to play in the Realms is what your character would know about the Realms. I appreciate the likely rules-laden nature of this book: my point is that my making slight concession to those who are more interested in the setting than the mechanics, they can sell more copies.

Agreed... while DMs set the background of the game and guide players through it, it'd be nice if the players had a source of information to provide more background fluff for roleplaying enhancement.

I'm sick of conversations like this:

Me: Okay, where is your new rogue character from?
Player: Westgate is the city of thieves, right?
Me: Yes.
Player: He's from Westgate, then.
Me: Okay, fine.
Player: What do people from Westgate look like?
Me: Ummm...
Player: Are they European-looking? Are they primarily blonde, or would you say darker hair is more prominent?
Me: Uhh, look it up in Races of Faerun.
Player: Okay. Hey, what are the prominent religions in Westgate? Who rules Westgate? Are there any notable thieves guilds that are common knowledge? Are wererats common, because I think I want my mentor to have been a wererat. How do people dress in Westgate? What's their favorite colors, what do they eat, am I driving you nuts, does the city import its grains and where from, why are you pulling your hair out, what kind of people should my character's parents be?
Me: Umm, err, well... I, ummm, maybe... look in, um, AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!

I agree with the need for a supplement that details very well the more unknown regions as well as the more commonly used ones, such as a higly detailed section on halruaa or nimbral as well as a section on how the nobility of Cormyr is handleing the changes of late. :fight!: I mean, in all the supplements from AD&D and thus far D&D 3E we've seen alot of detail to the heartlands north of the Sea of Fallen Stars and west of Tantras. There have been minor delvings into Aglarond and Thay along with Evermeet and the Moonsheas, but very rarely anything futher away than that. I'd also love to see more than a paragraph about Maztica, Kara-Tur, Zahkahara and maybe even some of the "unknown lands", even if it's just a small chapter for all of them in one. What about the Deities of these regions and natvies...especially with all the trouble Helm's clergy caused in Maztica... :twitch: see what these things bring out in me:cloud9: now I'm happy to get all that out....I hope they actually listen to us players/DM's/and all around enthusiests...:cookie: here's a cookkie for your thoughts *bows out gracefully*

What do I want...hmmm

Elves and their realms (and old realms aka Cormanthyr)in 3e detail including High Mage rituals.

Dwarves and their realms in 3e detail

Halflings and their realms covered in 3e detail

etc.

basically, these things could have been covered in RoF but they were not.

Other things I'd like to see.

An updated version of Old Empires (that book is old and a gazillion things have happened since then).

I would like to see an arcane age supplement, preferrably a Crown Wars supplement. I think that woud be sweet.

An update to the drow situation when it finally gets resolved...after that, no more drow stuff for many, many years (except the Crown War thing of course).

Could we have some more background as to how characters from the various human realms/areas might speak?

I was making up an NPC cleric for my new game the other night and, to make him distinctive, I decided to give him a French accent. I then spent ages looking through FRCS for some sort of clue as to where I might find the FR equivalent of the French. Geographically I would guess I should look at maybe Waterdeep or the Western Heartlands but I had a hard time picturing the Lords of Waterdeep or Duke Eltan of the Flaming Fist having zis outraaaageous accent. :D
