Yes, I know that about half of you are going, 'oh no, its another Drizzt.' No. I have no desire to play a goody-two-shoes dark elf defector. I want to play a real drow. A bad, conniving one. However, I don't have ANY of the FR books, and I really don't want to go out and buy any of Salvador's books so I can research the topic. I've already played as this character once before but it was a sudden thing, and I didn't have time to prepare a backstory for my character, this time I want to be ready sence I have two weeks to prepare. He is a level 8 Cleric of Lloth (Yeah, I know thats technicly a no-no, but my DM is allowing it, as long as I come up with a good reason for why Lloth has decieded to grant him and only him spells.) working under Jez the Lame (I think that was the guy, some Drow comander who had a snake familiar and a wooden leg) and my girlfriend is also joining the campaign, and I think I'm going to make her a lv2 Rouge/lv6 Assassin, drow as well, I'm in charge of making her character, sence this will be her first time playing, and I want her to be something that will work well with me. Thanks.

Well, first off if you are in Jezz the Lame's gang you are dead already for being a follower of Lolth. His whole group follows Vhaeraun, and bear no love for the followers of Lolth.

Not sure what you need help with here. :) Seems you got it down pat........

Anyone "spider kisser" so to speak, as Jezz and his followers refer to Lloth worshipers, are pretty much killed on sight, unless they have a VERY good reason for being there (i.e. Valas being friends with the Vhaerunian high cleric).

They hate Lloth...as is plainly stated.

Oh... um... that sucks.. I'm going to have to talk to my DM about that one... *sigh* anyway, Kuje, I was wanting help with backstory... and names, I have no idea how to make authentic sounding drow names. Hmm... was Jez always a Lloth hater guy, or was there a time that he was in her service, because if thats so, we may be playing in that time.

Ah. The Ever changing book of names, which can be found below has a FR add on that has drow names in it. :) Click the download link to the right side of the web page.

What part of the world do you want him from? I know that might be hard to answer but that would help to know.... :) And btw back in 2e Lolth did have male clerics but 3e well let's not discuss that....... grins.

If memory serves Lolth used to have 2, no more no less, male clerics of mid levels, and the only way to become one was to kill another.
Good way to placate the males, keeps things simple
I could be wrong though, this is second hand Second Ed. information.

Thanks, and I would assume the Underdark... however, the only drow city I know of is Menzoberazan... I probably spelled that wrong.... what other choices would I have?

You were close. :) Menzoberranzan. Hmm well there's some drow cities around the Heartlands..... Sshamath for instance which is different then the other drow cities because it's ruled over by wizards and the clergy of Lolth are pushed down to a lesser role. :)

That seems very apropriate.. where could I find information on Sshamath?

Ah, and as for names, I am Xultael now. I stil need a last name though... is there anyway to make the name generator to spit out family names?

By Law and decree I sayeth no! *Holy Lightning of Smiting comes downs and hits the ground before you* :uh-huh: :shifty: *Cough* I meant to do that. :D But yeah, I don't really know many really good drow last names. I made up a really good one and you can't have it but I just basically look at the examples and try going from there. I try to make them sound kind of like French names if you will. Don't know why but all elven names just seem to sound like french ones to me, or like graceful, eh, no what I mean ? *Shrug* As for generators your best guess is as good as mine. It usually takes me a few hours to think of a good first name for a drow it took me a month to think of a good last name.

Of course, I only get to play a drow PC every blue moon so that is alright for me. In any case, don't sell yourself sort on last names just because he is a drow, as far as I know they still share somethings in common with their surface dwelling cousins from Evermeet. You could try and use a last name like one of those but putting a twisted like effect to the name. Like instead of saying this is the family of Ishylalon maybe Ishylo'Nahara.

Just something to think about. Well best of luck. :tiphat:

Edit: You know that's not a half bad drow family name. Darn it! Oh well you can use it if you want I still got my drow family name that I like. :)

There are surnames on that Ebon program..... :) The Underdark sourcebook for 3.5 should have info on Sshamath as does Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark for 2e. :)

I would say no. The little back history his group gave us in the War of the Spider Queen, his group was persecuted by those of Menzoberranzan.
Just keep your stuff and change gods if that makes things easier.

Sshamath (also called the City of Dark Weavings) is pretty cosmopolitan for an underdark city, and arcane magic is the name of the game there. The city is ruled by a Conclave of ten mages, both males and females. If memory serves, one is a vampire and another is a lich.

Clerical magic is scorned, and no deity is widely venerated. There is a temple to Lolth, mainly for tradition's sake, but the clergy holds little real power. There is also a cult of Vhaeraun, and some Sshamathan drow even worship Mystra, Azuth, Savras, and other gods of magic. But religion is given very little public attention, and most of the inhabitants don't care what god you follow.

The Dark Weavings Bazaar is a center of magical commerce, trading in rare spell components, minor magical items, and the like. The Bazaar is open to anyone (even surface dwellers!) as long as they engage in business and don't do anything disruptive. It's not unheard of to find illithid sorcerers, beholder mages, svirfneblin illusionists, or human Red Wizards there.

Changing gods isn't quite that simple. In the previous seasion, my character had already made it crystal clear that he was an adamant follower of Lloth. Ah well, it doesn't really matter, I spoke with my DM and he said that it was no big deal to make a minor change in one character's religious allegiances. But he did say that Jez would only give Lloth lip service, and not actual devotion.

Nice reason for me to put a knife in his back, if I do say so myself...

"He" is a cleric of Lolth? Males aren't usually clerics of Lolth, try some other drow god. ex. Vhaeraun or if you're going towards less evil, Eilistraee.

Reason why, in drow society males aren't important. Lolth being the main drow god, mainly worshipped by females (more powerful, important and dominant in drow society) Plus Lolth has almost abandoned her worshippers, she doesn't seem to care about them right now, and nobody has really heard from her.... but then again I haven't read the most recent Drizzt book, so things could have changed. :D

Actually this isn't in any of the Drizzt books. It's in the War of the Spider Queen six books series. :) And in 2e thier was male clerics of Lolth, as I said, but 3e basically retconned that.

I know, and no. I'm not going towards anything less male or less evil ^^.

I've studied the base DnD version of Lloth muchly, and all this I know. (My DM says that the only real difference in the base DnD Lloth and the Fearun Lloth are that the Fearun one is a bit more powerful). The reason that my male character is a cleric is quite simple- she hand picked him to be one. According to the backstory I made, the spider queen actually appeared to his parents at his birth and demanded that he be a cleric. Now, why would she do this? Maybe she wants to see if males have potential or not. Maybe she had some form of premonition that one day her life would be in my characters hands. Maybe, being the chaotic person she is, she just decieded to mess with people a little.

Plus Lolth has almost abandoned her worshippers, she doesn't seem to care about them right now, and nobody has really heard from her.... but then again I haven't read the most recent Drizzt book, so things could have changed. :D

Yeah, thats all War of the Spider Queen stuff. My Dm hasn't iformed us of when in the FR timeline this all takes place.

Speaking of War of the Spider Queen, yesterday I bought book one, and I'm wondering, what is a pitlaf? (I know I spelled that wrong, I'm pretty sure its a form of ceremonial robe).

If you mean a piwafwi, it's the drow equivalent of a Cloak of Elvenkind that renders the wearer invisible (or nearly so.)

What level is your cleric, or should I say, what level did your campaign start at? Because to be hand picked by a deity seems kind of strange for a run of the mill character... or at least a low level character... and you're saying he's a chosen of Lolth???

It doesn't make sense. Lolth wouldn't handpick a drow male to worship her or hand pick somebody to be a cleric?

Then again Lolth is all about chaos... and I don't know your DM....

...What's this post about again... I completely forget...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wait a minute! Lolth appeared before your character's parents and demanded that their son be a priest?? Perhaps your DM is making his characters too powerful. (He's the Drow version of JC for God's sake!!)

Forget my argument, the Campaign Setting/Books or whatever iare just a backdrop... what your DM says, goes. I'm not in a position to argue. I'm giving up, too difficult to argue. But, consider not "making up" such a world changing thing for your character. Also if there are more characters in the party, they will feel less important. (unless they're also chosen or demi-gods or automatically lv 20 freaks who kill Balor's for fun) :(

The game started at level 10, and right now I'm level 11. And there is no 'party'. We each have our own little group of NPC followers (with the exception of Brian, who for some reason is playing a ronin from... somewhere way off the maps)

And no, I'm not the drow version of Jesus. I am not a god, I am not a demigod. I am a cleric, nothing else. it was just demanded by Lloth herself that I be one. I am not the stronest PC out there either, because when the Paladin of whoever decieded to pick a fight with me last game, I barely made it out alive while he didn't even have a scratch on him.

I DM a game with a Chaotic Neutral Drow Cleric of Kiaransalee. He hails from the ruined city of Ched Nessad and only recently escaped to the surface. He fell in with a Goodish-Neutral party whose morals are flexible enough to accomidate him.

If you want some good pointers on how to play your cleric, I think the best source you're going to find is probably Lolth's entry in the "Faiths and Pantheons" Forgotten Realms book. The entry is short enough that you could skim it at your local book or comic shop.
