Greetings and Salutations!

Hi guys sorry to bother you, I just registered with this forum. I'm a DM (or I try to be) but for the most part I only have players that play on maps that I've created or in my own world. I did this while I was trying to learn the game and get the hang of controlling a game. Anyway now I'm at a loss of ideas. I have heard about the Forgotten Realms setting and I really like it. Most of my maps were set in that type of setting. The thing is, I want to start DM'ing in the Forgotten Realms but I don't really know anything about the world. Is there anywhere I could go where I could get a map and description of towns and whatnot? Man I know it's going to be a LOT of reading but maybe a little bit at a time would be good. Please help.

Start with the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.. its a monstrous book that does cost but its well worth it.

Give that a read and see if it jump starts some ideas.. im pretty damn sure it will.

Well met and enjoy!

Yep. The best place to learn about the Realms is at the source. Definitely pick up the FRCS - and maybe Lords of Darkness. LoD is definitely good for a few FR adventure ideas...

I recieved the FRCS for my birthday, it's the best gift I've ever been given, it's excellent! I'm plodding through the geography chapter right now, it's huge, you could role-play with the same characters/group/etc in the Faerun, and never get tired of it! Once you've explored the continent above ( no easy feat ), there is a whole new world beneath the ground. The only problem for me is pronounciation, but I guess that's just me, since everyone so far seems to think I'm a bit of a fool for not knowing how to say 'Cormyr'

LoD is not essential, but it is a very good book. I would pick up the FRCS, Monsters of Faerun and if I had any money left I would consider Silver Marches or City of the Spider Queen. Both the later are great in terms of directing your campaign in a managable direction.

By the way, welcome to the Forgotten Realms!

Don't forget: 'Races of Faerun'
I was going to get Monsters of Faerun first, but I reconsidered, because I'm quite interested to hear how each nation appears and dresses, though you can make assumptions via the FRCS, especially when some nations live in deserts and ride on flying carperts, and others worship gods with names like Set, and Horus-Re ( **cough** ). RoF includes 80 extra feats though, which is impressive in itself.

Races of Faerūn is totally killer, tonnes of great background info for characters and more. It would definatly come in second after FRCS, no doubt about it.

Well Met Gentlemen/Ladies!

Wow thanks guys! I didn't expect a reply so soon. I'll definately get the FRCS book, sounds good, that's EXACTLY the type of thing that I was looking for. thanks for the advice. Hey...I also like to play, is there a game going on that I might be able to hop into online that any of you are looking for a player for? I have a level 6 fighter and am capable of making anything else if you need. Also remmeber I have no knowlege of this world really so I don't know the monsters very well, which would make me unknowlegable about the beasts we may encounter. So I'm not really cheating or anything ;).

You fool!!! If you download the books you don't support wizards and if enough people start download instead of buying then wizards will stop making and selling books because it's nonprofitable, so DON'T DOWNLOAD ANY BOOKS!!!!!

So you've downloaded the book. If you like it, please support the line and buy the physical book. Without book sales, WotC will not produce any more products.

Alright, Dracoth, I can see where you're coming from but here's how it is...

I downloaded books for a while. See, I got my 2nd Edition rulebooks a week before 3rd edition came out, so that completely screwed me over :( . I ended up refusing to convert for a year, then living off the SRD for a while... I was a sad, miserable person...

Then, I up and got the Player's Handbook, and everthing changed! I could check rules whenever I wanted, I didn't have to run to my comp during sessions... it was great.

Now, 3.5 is coming out    , but that's not the point. Nowadays, I download a book, browse through it... if it looks good, I buy it. Generally, I have a copy of every single D&D book on backup, just in case. Some books, I just want for one or two things, so I download. But if I plan on using a book a lot, then it's well worth my money.

2 things.....

1) I have access to a printshop that my family owns and can turn it into a book.

2) Of course I'll buy it when I have the cash! :P

I wouldn't go bragging about downloading WoTC books on their own website because you'll lose a lot of credibility and respect fast.

Support wizards? what are you talking about? WotC is evil, they don't care about the game, because they're just puppets of Hasbro, I bet the head of WotC has never even played the game. WotC doesn't need support because of all those players in IT, who buy every book for the sake of having it.

don't be dumb...who cares hwo he gets the books, its all about playing the game, if WE buy the books, it's enough, don't berate him for loving the game...get some kind of supplement that tells you more about the gods of forgotten realms, thats important, the gods, no matter WHAT anyone says, are a VERY important part of the realms...ALWAYS....

you won't lose respect with me for not buying every 60+ dollar book that comes out because you simply don't have that kind of pocket change

but thats just my dumbass opinion

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG

I just upgraded to 3rd edition, yeah it's different and I gotta start getting used to it. Oh well. Hey I love WotC, and I thank them for everything, I just have no money. First, think about what you just did, if I'm not able to afford the book, you might have just insulted my financial situation :(, but that's ok because I'm only 19 :). I'm in between jobs right now so I don't have a lot of cash on hand. Nor do I have any real gaming shops within a 20 mile radius of where I live. No place remote to my location even sells dice! The dice I do have is from the only game shop we used to have before it went out of buisness, the rest is from a shop down in Los Angales. There is "1" bookstore that I saw around me that has any AD&D books, and it has the DMG, Monstrous Manual, and the Forgotten Realms book about the Far East. But they don't even have a PHB, let alone that Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting!!!! I'll be looking around more places for the books and I'm hoping for luck. Anyway I had to put books on special order and I dunno if I have the cash for them. Also I looked at amazon and shipping will take awhile, for now this will have to do. Thanks for the help guys and I won't hold what u said against you or anythign cuz u didn't know. (Yes I will end up buying the books because I hate reading things on the comp, and I'm not printing them out and wasting money on printer toner.)

Ok Cya,

Dracoth

P.S. anyone play online?

Ok sorry I have another question to ask you experienced players since I am a humble new adventurer.....

I'm creating a new character and reading through the players handbook. The book gives me a table of ability scores and bonus spells (Table 1.1). The PHB is telling me "For each ability record the character's modifier. See table 1.1: Ability modifiers and bonus spells." Now here's my problem, in 2nd edition wasn't it intellengence that determined how many extra spells there were? Now all of them do? An Example, say I rolled all 16's for my ability scores (for example sakes) it says I get 1 bonus level 1 spell, 1 bonus level 2 spell, and 1 bonus level 3 spell. Does this mean that for every single ability score I get 1 bonus spell? So that in the end I end up with 6 level 1, 2, and 3 bonus spells? That sounds WAY off to me.

-Dracoth.

-------------------------------

WAIT, sorry scratch that I figured it out after an hour of looking at it, I get it now, sorry. It's a combined chart w/ modifiers and bonus spells lol.
Jaxian Redleaf

07-04-03, 07:30 AM
no it's only the main ability score for each class (int for wizards, cha for bards and sorcerers, wis for clerics, rangers and paladins)

I hope you understand me :)

I would also suggest picking up "Magic of Faerun." The FRCS doesn't really carry too much detail on the Wild Magic zones or the Dead Magic zones left over from the Time of Troubles. (Or am I the only one who happens to find them interesting?)
Dracoth

07-05-03, 05:48 AM
yeah I understand thanks. But I'm having another problem understanding the saving throws chart. How do you calculate them for say... a level 1 cleric?

-Dracoth

1) I have access to a printshop that my family owns and can turn it into a book.

A printshop? You lucky son-of-a... I mean, ahem, copy books bad!

*Imagines having fully-printed-not-computer-reliant d20 Modern for free*:cloud9:

*Because me knows me will never actually use it if me do buy it*:smirk:

Hm... as for saving throws, just take the bonuses for cleric (+2 Fort, +0 Ref, +2 Will), and add your ability bonuses (Constitution, Dexterity, and Wisdom, respectively). Whenever you're asked to make a particular Fortitude, Reflex, or Will save, you roll 1d20 and add this number.
Dracoth

07-05-03, 07:35 PM
Oh ok cool thanks, that's easier than I thought. I was thinking that the spot for Ability Mod was referring to something else, not the ability mod for the regular ability. Sort of like the DEX mod for AC which is located on another table. Thanks man. Yeah printshops are pretty cool :P

Also, I understand that a cleric does not have to follow a particular diety at all, but the domain restriction still apply (2 domains of one god/goddess). But do the allignments have to match as well? Here's my situation. I'm creating a cleric who is half-elven and he was outcated his entire life and never fitted into a society of humans or elves (how original it said so in the book.) Anyway, over time he has decided to become an adventurer becuase of his inability to fit in, and he has also become bitter to those who have outcasted him. So he sees himself as superior to those people, not the same, and dislikes/hates them, therefore is leaving to become strong and powerful for his own gain. This is the setup for an evil character, yes. His alignment is Lawfull Evil, I was looking for a god that was lawful evil that had the domain of war but I didnt' find one, that's ok I only wanted one of war so I could get the 2 free feats of martial weapon and weapon focus; but it's ok if I don't get those. I couldnt' find a god that really stood for what he does, so I started lookign through the list to see what the other non-evil gods domains were. I found one (with war btw) named Tyr. His domains are Retribution (which my char would love to do for evil type purposes) AND war. (which is strength that my charater also wants) The main problem is Tyr is Lawful Good, the antithesis of my character's alignment. Even though my character has no diety affiliation really, is it ok to use the domains of a Lawful Good god on a Lawful Evil character? Heck maybe even my character would change over time to be lawful good, but I doubt it. heh, this is tricky :-/.

Dude, read the PHB first. If you still have questions we will be glad to answer. No offense, but you are asking questions that are explained very clearly in the book.
Dracoth

07-06-03, 12:01 AM
Dude, I did. and the PHB says that I can have no affiliation with a diety, and still use their domains. It also says that I have to be the same alignment as them IF I were a cleric of that specific diety. However, I am NOT affiliated with him, so I want to know if it is ok to use those domains even though I am not of the same aligment, that's all I'm asking.
