| ModSin02-17-05, 12:49 AM | Hey all, I'm a transplanted birthright and ravenloft DM filling in as a favor to some friends in the fine world of Forgotten Realms. My overall story arc is dealing with a drow attempt to create human noble women "matrons" of lolth and spread the spider queen's love all accross the surface of the silver marches. What I'm in need of is some filler adventures or hooks or maybe some stuff I've missed in the marches. I've done a little bit with the Orc Chief Many Arrows but can someone point me in the directions of some good Silver Marches info maybe even from second edition (I own the 3rd edition book on the area). Just need some interesting locales when I'm not doing my main story thing. Also any and all advice would be welcome since this is my first time DMing and playing in the realms. |

Why would she waste time granting divine power to any other race? Yes, she treats male drow like dirt, but she much prefers them to humans or surface elves. |
| ModSin02-17-05, 09:54 AM | well your entitled to that opinion of course but my group is still enjoying them game, more so than the previous 2 FR dms. I could defend my position here by saying that this is all an attempt at a huge political destablizing effort of the marches(using a handful of noble human women) rather than full fledge real conversion of any sort (plus worshiping lolth is not making them high priestesses of any sort but it is causing them to serve drow interests on the surface) A debate on my story arc is not really what I'm interested in however. If this is how you feel I yield to your right to have an opinion. Back the orginal post intent... What I'm looking for plot hooks for things OUTSIDE my story arc. Any help on that front would be super. I'm looking for little locations and npcs I might have missed or were omitted from the silver marches book that I could use as extra stories. Thanks |

If it works for you and your group, and you don't have a problem with discontinuing Realms continuity, then go ahead and do it. I won't lambast you for it. I was merely pointing out a quirk in campaign logic. It's your version of FR, not mine, and it's not like DnD will break if Lolth deigns to grant clerical powers to a few human females to meet her ends. I suppose that being the Lady of Chaos and all it would be a totally unexpected mood, and might even be feasible. Go with it and see what works. Now to add some input that you might want to use..... As you said, Obould Many-Arrows is always a decent hook. He could take interest in your parties movements, and try to bargain with them. (After all, he had crappy relations with the Drow, it fell apart at the end of the trilogy, and he hates Drizzt, so could possibly enlist them to wreck this drow incursion. Nesme is still under assault by the trolls. Mayhaps your party is needed to light some fires, burn some green meanies? Goblin hunting is always fun. Khazid'hea is missing, and needs to be tracked down. Since this hasn't been covered in a novel yet, you could beat Salvatore to the punch, and take care of it. Maybe an urban adventure in a non-Silverymoon city? Maybe crack a thieves guild in Everlund, or solve a problem in the mines in Citadel Adbarr. Was that better? I seriously wasn't trying to bring your campaign down or anything. |

I don't know much about either would you mind filling me in or pointing me to the backstory. I could use the help from someone with good experience of the realm like yourself. |

Ah....if only everyone else I knew would bow to me for knowing tons about a fictional campaign setting. *sigh* Instead I got my ears boxed and lunch thrown down the stairs in high school. but anyway......why don't you tell me WHAT you know, and then I can fill you in from there? PM me, beacause I don't want this thread locked for me violating the Novels rules again. |
| tylerthehobo02-18-05, 03:34 PM | Just tossing in my $.02. Yes, Lolth thinks that humans are pathetic, but if you buy into the whole FR pantheon thing that the gods are granted power through their volume of worship (see all the Avatar stuff), then it is conceivable that Lolth would try to recruit other races of humanoids (even if the notion runs contrary to her belief system) just to bolster her ranks. (Yes, I know that Lolth was not party to the Avatar crisis, but it can be used to justify it to rules/campaign lawyers.) As to events in the Marches, the 3rd edition book gives lots of ambiguous hooks, but few precise ones, IMO. I've basically just begun transplanting other campaign ideas and modules into the marches and retrofitting them to fit. E.g. a module I found that documents a city with a problem with the undead was fit into Helm Dwarfriend's Sundabar, with him hiring the heroes to battle the beasties. Yes, it is great when you can get canonical data about what's happening where/when in the bonafide Forgotten Realms (and I respect folks who do know! Kudos!), but when at a loss, using third party or old FR stuff and fitting it to the current setting works great. In closing, you asked about 1st / 2nd edition stuff that works well for the marches. As I recall in the free downloads section of the Wizards site, there is "The North" boxed set, as well as the "Savage Frontier" campaign supplement, both of which are excellent sources for the general region that is now the Silver Marches (which is a 3rd edition construction, as I understand it). Happy adventuring! YARRRR! :dragon: |

Following the attempt (with poisoned quarrel, of course...some good ability damage), have a good chase scene out into the surrounding countryside. The assassin flees on horseback, PCs have to quickly find some horses and give chase. Plenty of ride checks ensue. PCs start to get near, assassin jumps off horse and rolls down hill. Now you can force some reflex checks on them or something, to avoid trees as they speed down the hill. Blah, blah, blah. Fill in something here. End the chase with a showdown atop a cliff with waterfall. Detail the terrain to make combat treacherous. Some dex/balance checks. Maybe add in a ring of feather fall if you want the assassin to escape. Or the assassin can jump to feather fall and the PCs shoot him down or roll boulders off. Motives for the assassin is not needed immediately. You can always tie it in to your main story later if you so choose. *shrug* Of the top of my head. :) |
