| Forsaken_Rocker05-21-04, 11:17 PM | There have been WAY to many really crappy threads started about the boards being opressive, the Wiz_O's going to far and such. I am starting this thread not because I'm mad at this, but im angry at people always complaining, so now we are going to complain in one thread giving honest, fair and THOUGHTFUL answers not ranting and being little 3 year olds. |
| aravilar_holistacia05-22-04, 12:02 AM | Sorry, Forsaken_Rocker, but even threads like this are against the administrator's comments. :( Originally posted by WotC_Mel I am going to make one final statement about this mess and then I am closing this thread. Why? Because the full scope of opinions has been expressed about the books dept decision, and now that some people have decided to infer that the forum was closed due to some shortcoming of moderation is simply BS. I won't have BigSister sit here and have to swallow that inference when she, above anyone other person on these boards, has taken enough behind the scenes guff to make the Buddah scream. Things she has never publically mentioned due to her sense of professionalism and her honoring her NDA. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by ElaineCunningham it's my observation that such rules helped set a tone for the board that is not consistent with the policy makers' stated intent. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since I, and the Online Media dept. I work for, are the policy makers for the website and its community, I can say that this is not the case. The moderation of this forum was consistant with the overall policy and goals for the site. To be clear, the community elements of this site--even as a corporate website that intends to promote its merchandise--has to date always understood that having message boards open to the public meant having a space available for debate. And the full spectrum of opinions implied by the word debate. Moderators are tasked with keeping that debate civil and making sure there are no ad hominem attacks. But not to censure opinion, negative or otherwise. I hope that I do not work this job long enough to see that mandate change. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a nutshell, I think a big part of the problem was that we were all trying for an interactive forum, but did not anticipate what "interactive" would mean to many participants. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will agree with you there, Elaine. Not everyone did or does get what message boards are about. To request that negative opinions about Wizards products not be allowed on this site is anathema to community. It demands that a forum become a uselessly over-bright commercial filled with satisfied testimonials rather than provoking dialogue of real feelings. And a useless forum is tanamount to not having a forum at all. The Books department understood that, and that is why they decided to not continue novel forums here. The routes of expressing further feelings over this issue has been explained--please use them. Further discussion on the topic will be closed. Melanie Creel Community Manager |
| WizO_Catoblepas05-22-04, 12:33 AM | Ok, I'm going to lock this hread for two reasons: 1) Polling is against the Code of Conduct and, 2) If you have a question concerning moderation on the boards, please contact the WizO in question. I'm sure that they would be more than happy to discuss the situation with you and I really recommend this option. However, if you don't feel comfortable, always keep in mind that you can talk with WizO_Paradox who happens to be the lead moderator for the boards. This is what I recommend for those who don't feel comfortable with dealing directly with me when they have a concern with my moderation style. However, as I said, I really suggest that you discuss it with the WizO in question before taking this option. The main point is that there are avenues of redress on the board if you don't agree with a moderation style. However, posting is not one of them. |
